Christmas in Provence

Christmas offers many traditions in France.
After midnight mass in Provence, the family gathers around the table to have a light meal of the, "13 desserts," to represent the 12 apostles and Jesus. The desserts are:
Almonds for the carmelites with bare-feet.
Figs for the Franciscans.
Raisins for the Dominicans.
Walnuts for the Augustines.
Apples
Pears
Clementines
Dried apricots
Black nougat
White nougat
Dates
Pate of quince
Bread called Pompe à huile.           Img_2109
Before retiring to bed, the children put their *sabots before the fireplace or around the Sapin de Noel (Christmas tree,) in hope that Pere Noel, will come to fill them with many little sweets.
Though now it seems, instead of a real wooden sabot, most people go to the pastry shop, and buy a "chocolate" wooden shoe, that is pre-filled with sweets.
As the Children’s Christmas song says:
Petit Papa Noel
Quand tu descendras du ciel
Avec des jouets par milliers
N’oublie pas mon petit soulier!
Raymond Vincy 1946
*A Peasant’s wooden shoe, called sabot were used, now any shoe will do!

  1. My late mother was born in France & came to the US as a young child to reside. Every Christmas her grandmother would send to us children a chocolate shoe filled with assorted candies and a white chocolate Infant Jesus. Could you advise me as to where I might find this confection of French tradition in the states. I’d like to keep the tradition alive for my own children.
    Thank you!

  2. Can’t believe that last year you’ve only got one comment for this sweet post! I didn’t know about your blog at the time!
During my au pair year en Provence my french family and I spent Christmas at the Nana’s house in Belgium and from there I went home to Germany for a few days and then back to Brussels, for that reason I didn’t know much about the Christmas traditions en Provence. I knew about the creche and the santons and the buche de noel, but that’s about it. So I find your post very interesting! Thanks for that my friend!x
