Louie Louie and the Art of Louis 16th

Louis 16th Sofa leg, without a ribbon around its knee.

The real thing. It hasn’t exercised in years!

Whatever is its secret!

The leg is steady on its heel and stands as straight

and tall as the day it was carved!

How many sofa legs can stand up to that claim?

The hand woven fabric…has endured too!

Certainly, many of couch potatoes

have planted themselves here.

Next time you buy something new,

ask yourself will it be around

in two hundred years?

Will it look as good then, as it does today?

Those Louis’ knew the secret to long-life…

Well not all of them, poor Louis 16th!

  1. Oh the leg looks gorgeous and well yes they did really good work back in the 17th century, especially if I look at my blue checkered IKEA couch which is only 10 years old, but the fabric gets already in pieces *rolleyes*. On the other hand I have a beautiful basket sofa which is 15 years old and still in top form, I can imagine it’ll be still here in 300 years, if there will be no fire that is.

  2. My husband builds furniture and restores antiques (no stripping–just cleaning, repairing, waxing and just making them usable again) and he’d enjoy your post. Things made now really don’t have the “life” that the old goodies have.
    And always…love your photos!

  3. good question…
    good thought…

There is no substitute for well thought design, proportion and craftsmanship. These days it seems that craft is truly enjoyed by few and practiced by fewer. The peaceful appreciate the time and effort it takes to become skillfull.

  5. Oh that is just a beautiful piece of furniture. You are a very lucky girl.
