Simple Necessities

My Grandmother Frances, came to America from the Azores. Her trunk was filled with simple necessities; a linen towel, a few chemises, a hair brush, a dress in cotton and one in wool, probably an apron, certainly a rosary, and a biscuit porcelain angel.
I remember as a child, I would secretly climb onto my Grandparent’s bed, reach my hand into the small shell, that the angel held, to touch the holy water that she carried. I would bless myself, as my Grandparents did every evening before they went to bed.
When I left America, to come to live in France, my Grandmother lovingly gave me her angel.

I’m interested in what was in your grandma’s trunk – seems she would have wisked through airport customs with those items. Unless she was planning to import that holy water… I didn’t know you were partially Azorian?
    Muito Obrigada 🙂

  19. What a heart-blossoming tradition! (That wasn’t meant to be a play on words with regards to my blog – I simply meant that when I read this post my heart swelled just a bit with such a lovely little happiness.)

  20. The angel and the ritual of holy water are wonderful. How much your grandmother must have loved you to give you this sweet blessing.

What a marvelous ritual, so simple, yet so believable.

  22. Grandmothers, G-d’s greatest gift to children. My grandmother was born in 1886. She saw the invention of almost every modern marvel that we know today. When she married, she began to keep a diary which she continued to do until the last few years of her life. She lived to be ninety. The history of the twentieth century was in those diaries…..written by a girl who traveled in a wagon from Missouri to Texas, bore eleven children and spent much of her life as a midwife. She was, is and always will be my heroine. Everything that I know of love I learned from her. I was blessed to be her granddaughter.

  23. Corey, you have such a beautiful family.
    xoxo

  24. i had an aunt who did that…she had a plain plastic holder (ivory colored) w/ a crucifx above it…i used to think it strange to do that in one’s house & not at church!

  25. Lovely, I have a sweet silver angel font in our bathroom – that I like to quietly take ‘blessings’ from too. Are you home now? did all go well with the cross-continent travel? I hope so. Hugs…

  27. My Grandmother, Maggie, collected silver teaspoons that she kept in a special wooden case made by my GrandPa. I loved when we would take them out for a polish. She would tell me a story about each one, where she got it, or from whom, and why she loved it.
The smell of the silver polish, the sound of the big clock ticking away in the corner, the light blossoming over the table…
These are gifts I still recieve from my Grandmother

It’s a great blessing to receive something so treasured. Such great memories and sweet of your grandma who wishes blessings to you.

  30. As a child I was at an brocante-market with my parents and saw a holy water-cup (I don’t know the correct term) that I loved immense.
I showed it to my parents and returned many times during our visit to admire it.
You can imagine my sadness when it was sold to someone.
A few weeks later I got it as a present from my parents.
The horror in this story is that I misplaced it somewhere. I know I had it in this house, but after painting a wall I couldn’t find it any more…..
The good news is that it cannot be lost. Hopefully I will find it again, one day.
