Sitting Still in a French Antique Armchair

Spending time sitting alone is a pleasure of mine.

Some would find it boring, their legs would feel antsy.

I see things differently, there are many angles and curves.

When you sit still does the silence sing?

photos: Different views of the same French antique chair of mine, "Transition" is the style of this French armchair. It has elements of Louis 15th and Louis 16th, blending the two forms created the next French antique period, brief as it was.

Sitting can be thought of like this…. transition between moments, and/or a moment in itself.

I am having my own “café for the soul” day today. Had planned to work from home, which is easy now with computers and laptops, but I have done less working, more sitting still, listening to Locatelli and Tartini, reading, thinking, nothing….
    Thanks for another lovely post.

  2. Sitting on my front porch is my favorite place to contemplate.
Now that all 3 kids will be in school, I’ll actually get to do that!

  3. sitting still and alone… is a luxury… in which I indulge…
    regularly… it is my therapy.

    Oh my…these have that..
    “Je ne sait pas” quality…
    Oh and they’re BLEU too!

  5. I happen to think very highly of sitting still.
    *wink*

Sitting still is always a pleasure – particularly when one is usually racing about, trying to get things done. Sometimes to just sit and “be” is more important than anything else. Lovely details on your chair. I have a similar one.

As a self-proclaimed loner, sitting alone is one of my most guilty pleasures…

  8. Sitting still, letting your mind focus on just that single moment — its something we each owe to ourselves. Creativity flows in a still room!

  9. Sitting can be a very fulfilling pastime, if you have mastered the art of simply appreciating the view before you – your home, your garden, the hurried passersby. Good for the body; good for the soul.

  10. I rarely just sit still, alone. My mind is awhirl with all the things I could be doing, constructive things. Unless I get up and take a walk, I find myself giving in to the urge to “do.”
There is real value in learning to relax.

  11. Ohhhhh I dream of sitting for hours in a chair like that next to you – sharing soulfood!

  12. Wow, what a beautiful color blue. I love the scratches on the leather and the wooden bow on top. It’s just lovely! No wonder you enjoy time spent there 🙂

  13. I suppose in life the chair available decides whether we enjoy sitting or not.

  14. sitting.. still.. means for me.. everybody left home..or is still asleep.. no voice to calling you..
you reminded me my mother.. she used to say.. I’m going to sit.. if you have something to ask for.. do it now..
I sit in the mornings.. before going to work.. while everybody is still sleeping.. looking to the garden.. and letting my mind wander.. about.. freely.. sitting is proper thinking..
and yes I love the chair.. all the details and the patina..
and I like the way how you take photographs of the objects.. thank you..

  15. I admit that sitting still is very hard for me. There are always so many things calling my name! It is good for the spirit to be able to sit quietly ~it’s one of my goals to cultivate stillness :~)

  16. LOVE seeing the world through your eyes, Corey.

  17. I love just sitting quietly. =)

I think everyone needs time to be alone, slow down, to sit and relax, to dream…I love to sit with a book drinking hot chocolate or tea enjoying music and watching the world go by.

  19. The art of sitting still is one everyone should indulge in. Paying attention to our breathing..in, out, in, out. Feeling settled and quiet with our thoughts, looking out a window or at the splendor of a garden or with a book on your lap – contemplating the words you’ve read. I believe those times are essential in an otherwise very busy world.

The red arm chair was moved yesterday and now I have a new perspective……….the bird bath in the garden and it’s daily visitors.
I sit and watch, still, centred and just be. There is frantic washing, jostling and drinking going on out there!

  29. Sitting still, being still, findind the stillness in me — I must do that more often. Thank you for reminding me.
