The Secret Garden

Amongst the flowers that fade

there is a spirit that does not grow pale,

reborn season after season,

life after life, coming again and again,

tangible and fragrant.

Reminding us that life is more than the few petals and thorns we hold in our hands.

That which we cultivate in our souls does not die.

Water your life with open veins.

My favourite dried flowers are hydrangeas, so big and bold. What with Carol (Paris Breakfasts) being in Paris and you posting beautiful things everyday I am envying you both beyond belief.

  4. Lovely thoughts. Food for thought. Thank you.

  5. Thanks for reminding me that the darkness can never overcome the light of the flame.

Beautiful even in decay (Julie from Handmaid recently discussed the beauty of decay). The spirit of rebirth, so similar to our resilient fight for life even in times of trial. I love Lilies, the simple elegance and beauty standing proud with its sweet scent.

Beautiful photos and sentiments. Lovely post.

Brittany and its bright blue shutters and doors, its wonderful bushes of hydrangeas, its black-roofed houses, its strong religeous background, its lot of islands, its drizzling rain …
Another hint of yours, as Bréhat has been depicted by one of my best French female authors: Jeanine Boissard… and right now, I feel like dashing upstairs to get the book and to read the chapter(s).

  11. Beautiful — Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers. When they bloom they are heavenly and when they fade they have such a dignified grace.

  12. Lovely post and shared sentiments.
    Annabelle =^..^= xo

  13. The hydrangeas are always lovely – planted a couple here this year.
I am putting your quote: “That which we cultivate in our souls does not die.” In my memory treasure box. Thanks

Such beautiful thoughts, Corey. Thank you.

  16. Hello,
I’m out reading Halloween related posts by expatriate bloggers…and putting the links to them on my blog. But I had to drop by. I see that while I don’t find the typical holiday fare here, you have a topical, but poignant remembrance of these days. It’s not a surprise…beautiful.
    Meilleurs vœux!

  17. You are the well that I dip into to replenish my soul 🙂
You never fail to write something inspiring and thought provoking.

  18. Oh I love hydrangeas, I’ve harvested all I had in my garden yesterday to save them from the frost we are supposed to get tonight. Brrrr it’s gettimng really cold here and is extremely windy and wet at the mo. So how is the weather en Bretagne?

  19. Beautiful post Corey for this frosty cold November morn…it is always warm and golden and summer when I visit your blog.

  20. Dreamy Colors Corey – you find inspiration where ever you are!

Unfortunaletly it is too cold for hydrangeas up north where I live. I have tried a bush in my garden, but it got no flowers this summer.
    A beautiful post.
Have a wonderful time in Brittany. We hope to visit that area next summer.

  25. Such a beautiful blend of color, contrast, and sensitivity. God bless you Corey.

  26. Perfect.

  27. ParisBreakfasts

    jolie…

  28. Note to self: plant some hydrangias for next year.

  29. Your words strike a chord, as always. I’m also struck by the beautiful colours of the paintwork in the photos of doors you show. Sometimes they are faded, and at other times they are vibrant, but always they are welcoming.

  30. It is good to catch up with your posts; they refresh me as no other can.
    Enjoy your time away!

  32. I love hydrangeas and they make one of the best dried flowers – my secret garden is in my heart.

  33. I noticed my nasturtiums are doing the same..
they are all to seed.. and with fading leaves.. and some new fresh flower buds..
    and so the impatiens..
they fade away and there are some new coming ones..
nature always makes us believe in .. life..
    enjoy your walks..

    A Secret Garden? Mmmmm!
In my SG, I literally stand and stare, or sit and think. It’s a haven and a source of wonder, with it’s resident Possum, a blue tongue lizard and tiny Silver eye birds.

  36. corey you are the most wonderful heARTful person i “know” in our blogging community…so happy to come visit you here!

  37. I can almost savor the scent from here…
