French Lingerie

French women, (and men too,) have a passionate affair with food and lingerie. Bakeries and lingerie shops compete with one another on every street. You can buy pretty sexy undergarments at the grocery store, just like bread they come in many styles and shapes…mais oui! Food and the oh la la sort of thing, are food for the soul, why not be sold at the same place? The French do not have as many hang ups about food, nor that which seems sexy. The enjoy la belle vie, and just get on with it.

One day I happened to be drawn into one of those delicate lacy lingerie shops, because through their window I saw an antique statue in the background. The saleslady asked if I need any help, I blushed telling her I came in only to admire the statue up close, and that I wear basic white cotton (if you know what I mean.)

Well, that didn’t stop her from diving into the undie drawer and pulling out untold secrets I never thought about. The statue no longer held my regard, it stood stone face while the saleswoman gave her best pitch. She simply said this:

"Women enjoy feeling pretty, undergarments are underneath and close to their skin, it reminds them that they are feminine, sensual, that they have an untold beauty within. (She had me, I mean wow, had she ever considered writing poetry? But her best line was to come…) She continued, "When you see someone, no matter their age or size, if they are dressed with style they look good, attractive, and their style is pleasing to the eye. You do not have to be a skinny beauty queen to wear nice undergarments. Pretty is pretty, and plain is plain, no matter the size of the hips."

It made me think; I eat whole grain bread, why should I stick to plain white cotton? The French do most things with a certain savoir-faire, they have a knack for making the ordinary extraordinary, and the simple pleasures obtainable.

photo: While taking a bite out of the baguette I had in my hand, I looked at these undergarments tempting me like the snake in the garden of Eden…hum, pretty in pink, ditch the white cotton!

  1. Every January on holidays I do my once a year pretty lingerie purchase…it costs a pretty penny too but I LOVE it. I love feeling beautiful from the inside out. Ditch the whites and treat yourself…you deserve it. Nel

  2. Here’s to joy and all the things that bring a smile to your days.
    Ooooh La La.
    Love Jeanne ^j^

  3. A few too many referrals to the “granny panties” by my dear man and I ditched the white also.
I will not, however, wear ruffles under my clothes. lol I have enough of them naturally.

  4. ah you AND susanna tempting me to buy undies!!! i think i WILL have to scoot over and check out the selection. sensual is the new utilitarian!!!

  5. I tend to stick to my true-blue cotton white underwear.
Although I did buy a pair of black sheer panties that made me forget I had something on underneath!

  6. I am smiling at this..
As I read, I am thinking about how my love affair with the bakery affects my choice in lingerie ~ and then I read on and your sales lady makes a valid point..!
How true, when I wear something girly, it affects my mood and the way I feel, even though no one can see my ‘ruffles’ ~ today when I visit the bakery ~ I will wear lace..!!

  7. Oh yeah ditch the whites! I totally agree! It’s really neat how putting on a pair of pretty undies can effect your entire frame of mind, not to mention your spouses oooh lala! There is just something about ‘feeling’ pretty!

  8. damn.
    I need to go shopping.

  9. When I was a girl my best friend confided to me that her ‘dowdy’ mother (who always wore plain housedresses) wore VERY fancy ‘underwear’. I was shocked!! But, isn’t it true that we often find out wonderful, marvelous things about people that they have kept hidden from us?

  10. Time and a place for everything and sometimes white cotton just doesn’t fit the bill!

  11. Anonymouse

    LOLLIPOPS?
    You wear Lollipops?
Those aren’t yours in the pic? ? ?

  12. my life is way too boring… we have fajitas, t shirts and pantyhose at our grocery store..

  13. Ooooh…I adore these, Corey! They are sooo pretty! I’m betting French Husband is lifting a glass of wine in a toast to this post! ;p

  14. stephanie s

how mortified i would feel if i were in a traffic accident in paris and was rushed to the hospital… i am sure they would refuse to help me; i am not sure i would blame them…. i have got to go shopping.
    TONGUE IN CHEEK RESPONDS: LOL!

I lost almost 100 lbs 8 years ago and “discovered” that I love pretty underwear. My only thing is that pretty has to also be comfortable to me.
I still need to lose weight but my dh (and others) have convinced me finally that sensual and sexy are an attitude and not a size.
    have a wonderful day.

  16. herhimnbryn

But it has to be SOFT lace and a good scaffold for moi!
I adore pretty, but in Oz heat it can be so uncomfortable unless it is cotton and soft;)

  17. Lingerie in the grocery…I didn’t know they HAD Wal-Mart in Paris!! LOL!

  18. You’ve just described perfectly why I decided a few years ago to boycott plain white undies and bras. I don’t own a single undergarment in white. (When I want a neutral I wear skin-tone-beige or black, but I have lots of fun colors too.)

  19. Any gift perfectly packaged is more appealing. “Oh la la!!!!”

  20. Teresa Sheeley

Yah HOO!! I feel like going and buying new panties! I love this post, I love learning something new from you everyday! Thanks Corey!

What a fantastic sales woman, and she deserves the praise for making undergarments sound like magic to the skin. The wonderful French and their poetry much like how you describe everyday objects drawing us into wanting to explore your world deeper, and share in the fascination that is life.

  22. I agree….the sales woman needs to write poetry.
After reading this…how could I never go back to regular undies?
    OOoo la la,
    happy friday

  23. I always think these things look so pretty, but the ruffles and such seem highly impractical under nearly everything I wear. Of course, I guess you could always wear them alone and they’d be fine 😉

  24. As delicious on the inside as on the outside – true Frenchmans Pastry! What a DELIGHT!!!

  25. Paris Parfait

Yes, no other lingerie can compare to the French – but the French do not make lingerie for someone with an ample bosom, alas.

  26. I am shocked to learn you are a white pantie girl! I am too, but now I may have to go out and spice up my undie drawer. Maybe that is what is wrong with my love life?

  27. I thought you would always have been a pretty french lingerie girl Corey! Those in the photo are adorable I would love to have something like that.Pretty lingerie is like shoes and bags to me, a must have!

  28. I bought my favorite bra at the grocery store, Monoprix. I am amazed at the number of lingerie stores in Paris–there seem to be two or three on every block.

  29. thanks for the inspiration! I thank you, my underwear drawer thanks you, myhusband thanks you, and Nordstrom thanks you! 😉

  30. Please tell me that you took this photo while the sales lady was looking on. I really like her attitude, and good for you (and your husband) for adopting it. I’m joining the others and going shopping with them.
PS-thanks for stopping by my little blog! it made my day!

  31. oh my gawd ! I am going to race out and buy me some of this – and I thought the french had a love affair with wine? hee, hee.
My friend went to Paris a few years ago and went into a store and spend $50 on a pair of knickers and she isn’t a skinny model but she said they made her feel like she was.

  32. la vie en rose

how could you NOT buy something after all that??? heck, when i finished reading i wanted to hop in the car and head to victoria’s secret…

  33. Je ne sais pas ce qui m’a le plus amusée : ton texte ou les commentaires des lecteurs..
Quel bon moment et quelles photos splendides !
    Merci pour tout !!!

  34. I love your last few posts.
I love the birds and your conversation with your daughter. My children are small still. It is interesting to see where our children see themselves amongst the crowd. I am sad that so many young women (and men) view high school as a popularity contest. How can we change that? The first college I went to was like that too. I left after one semester because I was paying for school myself and thought This is ridiculous!
    Happy blogging birthday! 🙂
Always lovely to visit you (and so very interesting!)
    XO,
    Melba

I’ll show my husband to wake his appetite 🙂

  36. Pauline Clarke

There’s nothing quite like some pretty thing to wear that makes us feel pretty. I like wearing pretty undergarments that no one else knows about – it gives me a delicious sense of knowing myself to be more than my visible exterior 🙂

  37. french husband

    😉

  38. Corey, you do make me smile — and so do these comments. Thanks.

  39. annie lockhart

i’ll toast to that…if i wear my whites…i feel like plain vanilla…a bit of sheer and color…do wonders!!!

  40. Ah, Madame the saleslady was right. One must have some silky nothings interspersed with the white, misted with a touch of just the right perfume. Because Chanel wisely said: “Une femme mal parfumée est une femme perdue.”

  41. Art Tea Life

    OOOO la la !
    Very inspiring !
    Great POST !

  42. It’s a lesson I learned from my sister, that no matter what a girl needs to feel girly.

  43. savoire faire… is everywhere!

  44. OUI nos maris, nos amants , nos hommes aiment la lingerie ! OULALA
But so do we ! a sweet and delightful sensation , feeling the silk and the deep colors running down to the hips …
MARVELLOUS post , one again Corey !
as we say ” tu as tout compris ” !

  45. JanePoe (aka Deborah)

I started investing in pretty underthings a few years ago … it’s like a delicious secret I carry around all day 🙂

  46. Well, did you BUY anything in the shop?!

  47. She’s a good sales woman. 😉 lol

  48. Bye bye Hanes…hello sexy and feminine!

  49. marie-noëlle

Well I think it is all a matter of mood !
Some days call black lace, some others peach silk, or white cotton! It just depends on your mood !
I like the way this saleslady puts it!
Adding a counterpart to her message: “A good fruit is a good fruit, even wrapped up in paper!”

  50. Dearest Corey “YOU GO GIRL”
Pink is perfect with whole wheat bread!
Halfway through reading this when you said they sell lingerie at the grocery store, I laughed thinking of how fun it would be to say “yes, honey, a gallon of mile , some eggs, and a new thong!
    =)
My hubbu does most of the grocery runs and he would love it too!
