Messages on the Path

There is a message waiting for us to be discovered in each step we take on our path.

Gathered in the crevices of bold stones and softened by the embrace of tender green moss,

Messages rise to meet us in the delicate leaf that sprouts from a cracked sidewalk, heart-shaped; it tangles and twists on whatever it can climb. Maybe we unconsciously smile if we notice it.

Those unseen messages whisper to us in the stillness of the puddle that we try to avoid, as we barely glance at what it is mirroring back at us.

Do we notice life's goodness, it's gift to us? Our steps leave the past, and each step leads to the future, a constant reminder of time passing by, each heartbeat, each breath, and each unnoticed sunbeam before our eyes.

Ah, the language of the universe lapping itself around us.

As we walk, we are accompanied by the rhythm of our footsteps, creating a symphony that echoes through the streets. It is up to us to listen closely and hear the melody that sings in our hearts and soul. Be it flute and drum.

  1. Message in a puddle…
    Everythings a muddle..
    Watch where you truddle!
    Who you trying to befuddle?
    Tongue in Cheek responds:
    Aren’t you a clever little mouse 😉

  2. Yes!! And the stories are only limited by the listener.

  3. I am too busy running along the path to be noticing any messages – I need to slow down, don’t you think?

  4. Go forward in the direction of your dreams.
    Put your best foot forward.
    Love you Sugar Plum
    Love Jeanne

  5. oh yes…nature always tells her secrets when you listen 🙂

  6. Observing each and every step you take will tell you what you need to know 🙂

  7. Beautiful photo, love the sepia effect and the shapes in the leaves. ‘Stop, Look and Listen’ applies to life as well as the roads. There is beauty anywhere to those who seek.

  8. I’m reminded of a favorite movie, Field of Dreams, when the character played by Kevin Costner continues to hear a voice but doesn’t quite understand what is being said or what it means. I feel that way. I am listening, I think. I KNOW I’m being told something but I can’t quite put it together yet. Maybe God’s speaking in French. 😉

  9. Corey, I’m blown away this morning with the depth and profundity of your words, the animal school message…both exceedingly beautiful. Thank you!

Listening and understanding! Two words matching together with the heart…
After reading your post I thought of Baudelaire in his poem “Correspondances”, starting:
“La nature est un temple où de vivants piliers laissent parfois sortir de confuses paroles. L’homme y passe, à travers des forêts de symboles qu’il écoute mais qu’il ne comprend pas…”
I often think about these verses… now I will have this very picture on mind whenever I say them to myself…thank you.

  23. I always enjoy your blog and the links. Your blog was even discussed at the Willows Christmas Craft Fair…your Aunt Evelyn mentioned it to me and then we started talking about how we enjoy reading it everyday. Thanks again for your beautiful thoughts.

  24. Beautiful photography and writing! I read several posts and enjoyed them all! I’ll be back to read some others. For now: an intersting internet cooincidence:
Ironically, I broswed here about an hour ago from Bella Dia’s blog on a random whim to look at someone’s site from her blogroll, but I was booted from the internet before I could comment here.
I’m back having recognized your name in the comment thread of my net friend Sue (PoemCat)!
I write poetry too and am an artist, but my poetry isn’t transferred yet onto the typepad site.

Mmmmm… if only every child got nurtured to his or her capacity…is there a capacity?

  26. i’m going to make it a habit to step in more puddles just so i can hear what they have to say…

  28. beautiful photo … and are you saying your home was at the animal school? 😉
    great video btw!

  29. this post is the kind that need to be kept where one can be reminded daily of beauty rising to meet you.

  30. This post reminds me of a message in a path that I left. When I was 15 my parents took us to Segesta to visit the ruins. The long pathway that leads to the temple is flanked by a plant that I don’t know the name of, but it has very long leaves. My sisters and I noticed right away that nearly every leaf on nearly every plant was graffitied with the names of its visitors. What did we do? We demanded my father’s car keys and scratched our names into a leaf, too. Thanks for jogging my memory of a very happy day (not for the plant, though).

  31. Hello….
I found your blog and was just in heaven looking at the incredible antiques you’ve shown. It must be so absolutely so wonderful to live in France. My husband and I are always dreaming of going there someday. We are artists and I know we would be so inspired by the countryside, the history, the art and the people. Your blog is so wonderful. I found it through Ulla’s blog (which I love, too!). If you’d like to see my art blog, it’s at:

I will visit your blog often!!

  32. oh yes.. if you have your eyes.. you do.. see details around..that fill life..
    are these violets??

  33. I’m reminded to pay attention to the details. The video made me smile and think about all the ways gifts come to each of us.

  34. Corey,
When i run my hearing gets 20/20. That’s when I hear the messages clearly and am uplifted. Sometimes I feel your fingers on my pulse.

  35. Your site is my treat (almost) everyday. You always manage to uplift me. This is the first time you have made me cry. I clicked on the ‘my childhood home’ expecting to see photos of where you grew up. Instead I saw something that I really needed to.
I was the kid who was never any good at sport and I now see this in my own small daughter. She is about to start school in February (here in Australia)and I’ve been hoping that they’ll push her into sport at school. Thanks for the timely video. Maybe she’s just like me, and you know, that’s going to be okay. Hey, she’s great at art!

  36. Oh, to have ears to hear…

  37. To observe the hidden messages to listen to our paths…a great gift.
