Songs of Silence

                 singing in silence,

                 Side by side,

                 Hand on heart,

                 Knowing.

                 Does silence sing to you?

Photo: A peeling painting, and a chipped gilded statue stare softly, part of an altar in a basilica, next to the French village where I live. This church is said to be the burial place of St. Mary Magdalene

Merry Christmas and thanks for all your wonderful posts and photos.

  4. Wonderful words. And yes, silence sings the most beautiful song to me.
So you live near La Basilique St Maximin? Marie Madeleine is so so dear to me, and has been since I was a kid. So glad some of the wrongs are being “righted”.
Wishing you the most delighful holiday season. Joyeux Noel and bon reveillon to you! (sorry, typepad won’t let me type accented characters in the comment!)
    Bright blessings,

  5. Merci pour tous ce liens, ces superbes textes et photos. Très beau Noël Corey !

  6. No, not sing. It is more a beautifully relaxing chamber ensemble.

  7. When my kids go to bed at the end of a day filled with the noises only kids can make, silence is most certainly music to my ears.

  8. Yes I need my quiet time each day to collect my thoughts and pray.
The sound of silence is God’s voice speaking to us.
When your heart speaks take good notes.
    Blessings
    Love Jeanne

  9. Silence is essential to my emotional well being. It is from quiet reflective times that I draw my strength and energy. To sit and study this figure in solitude would be an ideal way for me to renew and enrich my spirit. This is a beautiful statue, who could fail to admire its subject and craftsmanship!
    Joyeux Noël !

  10. Who knew when I took Mary Magdalene as my confirmation name many years ago that she would become a woman of such great mystery in our time. Music of the Heart — one of my favorit books, Brother David Steindl-Rast one of my favorite authors, and his website, www.gratefulness.org, also one of my favorites. Thank you for your beautiful post.

  11. silence is essential and particulary today where somebody I love, had leave …. forever

I’m not sure I believe there is such a thing as pure silence – quiet, yes, but even the spheres are said to sing. I like the idea of a musical universe, one that sings and sighs and whispers.

  13. Sometimes silence is louder then noise… May the bells of above ring in your days…

  14. Lots to ponder during this Christmas season. Chant leads us to a quiet, meditative place within ourselves. Merry Christmas, Corey!

  15. Yes, often it does. Thankfully!
Have the most precious moments of happiness with your family and friends.

What a thought provoking post. Thank you for the links. My husband has takent he kids for the day and I am still in bed, drinking tea and can only hear a distant clock and occasional far away train. It is restorative to say the least. I’m looking forward to reading this book and enjoyed the historical sideline. Thanks so much and have Merry Christmas.

  19. Silence (or quietude) is an essential for me. Some can concentrate easily with noise and confusion about them, but to get serious work done (whether at my job or just “mental” work at home) I need quiet.
There is an appreciation of what is around us that comes only when the manmade noise subsides.

how you notice these subtle juxtapositions and augment them with words that fit so perfectly continues to astound and delight me. thank you for your remarkable vision and wisdom. the quietness of this piece and each hand held to heart will echo with me all day.

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more.
    People talking without speaking,
    People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence(Simon & Garfunkel).

  22. Lovely. Silence DOES speak to me…now if I could just get him to turn off the Golf Channel… 😉 Merry Christmas, Corey!

  23. Sometimes, silence has a very lovely melody. Beautifully poem!!

  24. Alison Whittington

    Silence is essential.
    Happy holidays!

  25. Beautiful Corey.

Interesting question. I’m not sure I like (or can find) silence – although I find ‘quietude’ absolutely essential. To be able to be still and ‘quiet’ in the midst of everything going on is a treasured thing…

    Happy Holidays!
If I come to Provence can we go ice skating, and then for some hot cocoa chez toi!!

  28. Hmmm…I have an art book on Mary Magdelene, signed out from the library a week or so ago, sitting on my bed table. She certainly is a woman of mysteries. It’s interesting how she has been portrayed(and represented Women) throughout the ages, especially in art.
Yes, silence does sing to me…especially while painting or during a snowfall.
