Red Riding Hood’s Secret

Today at the flea market in Marseille, I came across Little Miss Riding Hood. She was extra cheery at that ungodly hour. What is it with her? Why is she so very chirpy on her way to see the big bad wolf? Then I noticed her secret peeking out of her picnic basket!

  1. Corey, remember she thinks she’s going to see her Grandmother. All little girls are cheery on their way to a Grandparents house.
Having just had our Granddaughter for a 24 hour visit this old Grandmother could use some of that surprise about now tho.

  2. Gardengirl

Ohhhhh I never noticed this about Little Miss Riding Hood. Now that is a surprise!!! It looks like red….I wonder if it has a French label? Your very observant Corey.

  3. Hey there little red riding hood you sure are looking good……
    Remember that song………
    Ahhoooooooo

I am always fascinated by the dark side of seemingly innocent fairy tales (that book looks interesting). Have you seen the movie ‘The Brother’s Grimm’?

  6. And I thought it was because she was planning on sharing that bottle of vintage wine with the big bad wolf. What do I know??

  7. Corey, I’ve read your blog for some time and just want to jump in here to tell you it’s my favorite of many excellent ones I read. I love to travel with you through France and read and see glimpses of your life. The pic here today is adorable. I especially loved a side board you had up a while ago of pics of going to Market faire. Such treasures there to see. Great writing, great pics.

  8. That sweet picture takes me right back to my childhood and my battered and well-lkoved book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Thank you!

  9. Oh no, Little Red is a happy drunk? Say it ain’t so.

  10. Ah Corey — you made me laugh out loud this morning!!

  11. Paris Parfait

How adorable! You have a great eye, Corey.

  12. HA!!! well that certainly cheered ME up this morning!! 🙂

  13. Well obviously it was some of Grandma’s ‘secret recipe’ and she was (unbeknownst to her at that time) eventually going to use it to get the wolf drunk so she could slip away! Can you tell what make and model it is?

  14. Lori Witzel

What a great wish for an at long last sunny Sunday! Can’t wait to see what you find next…

  15. Britt-Arnhild

I loved this story as a child, the way the evil was defeated by innocence 🙂

  17. Maryam in Marrakesh

It’s gorgeous weather here in Marrakech and we just had lunch outside. Now why didn’t I think to use Red Riding Hood’s secret? One must not wait til sundown to have a glass of wine on the weekend, right?

  18. I can always count on you to de-mistify old tales… Wonder if she had a beautiful etched crystal glass to go with it? Truly charming PC, will you photocopy it???

  19. The fact that these words exist in reality for you,”Today at the flea market in Marseille” makes me wonder what the heck I am doing in the hills of Arizona…I love having moments of enjoyment through your descritpions…Thank you…Vanessa

  20. What time do the flea markets open in Marseilles? It is overcast and rain is in the forecast here in Seattle. Better than the snow we had last week.

  21. I guess she is truly a French little red riding hood!

There you found the picture of the real story!
Laura-Rose’s gran had been poorly and so had been compelled to stay in bed for a while. She had to ask her neighbour, Mr Wolf, to come around and do her gardening. He had brought all his tools(chain saws, shears, mowing machines,…) and within no time the garden was nice and neat.
A few weeks later, the old lady could leave her bed but could not go out yet. She asked her grand daughter :
“Please, Laura-Rose, take your bike and go to Mr Wolf’s to thank him for his help.
Give him this bottle of Beaujolais nouveau, this pâté and the loaf of bread…
and do not forget to put your helmet on !!!”
That’s how Laura-Rose ended up riding to Mr Wolf’s with her red helmet on!
Some people in the neighbourhood made a fuss about this little treat to Mr Wolf which was turned into a put-up job…
Thank you for your surprise, Corey !

  37. Definitely a french red riding hood!

  38. I guess we all have our secrets… Red Riding Hood isn’t exactly hiding hers though – it’s there for anyone who is looking.

  39. PMSL Corey, I never saw it that way lol

  40. Hee! That would certainly explain little Red Riding Hood’s rosey cheeks!

  41. Stephanie

Oh that is wonderful! No wonder she’s so cheery.

  42. Her maman had spiked her baby bottle of milk with a little wine to keep her happy. So by the time she got to this age, well…
(My mother told me that in her day, the French government put up posters everywhere asking mothers NOT to put wine in their babies’ bottles.)

  43. Red is so cute. I have some old postcards that I’ve scanned and want to post one of these days.
I bought some in Saignon two summers ago.

  44. ally bean

    lol. Very clever girl.

  45. This is interesting. Seems the red wine bottle surprises you in this depiction? Do American Red Riding Hoods not have red wine in their baskets? Not ever? I ask in this surprised manner because in Germany, there will never be any Red Riding Hood depicted without a bottle of red wine and a cake in their baskets on their way to Granny at her sickbed 🙂 This little version of your postcard is depicted in the way German kids have seen her since Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s times; she is even wearing the traditional costume from the Northern Hesse region where the brothers Grimm lived …

  46. LOL, cute!

  47. Goodness–I just love old postcard images. They’re always so quaint and colorful. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

  48. You come up with such finds! Always a pleasure to stop by your blog…

  49. I think you might be right Corey.

  50. my backyard

    haha, this made me laugh.
