Those numbers keep piling up one after another! They seem to be rolling out faster then I can keep track of! Not so long ago 14 was here, then poof it was 37, and in a blink of an eye 49! At this rate I’ll be 100 before I know it! I hope I can blow out that many candles! Alma and Julie this means you are going to be 50! (I had to rub that in!) And Dad you will be 80! What is your number?

Let’s have a game at “jeu du béret” … it sounds French but I’m sure you must have your version in the US…
You stand at one side of the ground with your team while I stand on the other side with mine.
we put the béret (usually a child’s cap)in the middle – this time we’ll put numbers- down on the floor… When the leader calls out “49” both of us must run and catch the number and bring it to her team.
Ready?! OK!
Leader shouts:”55!”
Off run Jeanne and Di Overton to the middle of the ground…
They go round and round the number, glancing down at it, then up at the other hunter, then away at their teams… Finally Di picked number 55 and dashed to her lot. One point for them!
“49!”
You and I reach the middle of the ground… I know too well you can be cheeky and that you know many tricks… so I keep on the watch. You are cautious too, ready to prevent me from taking the French leave with the number… you can hear your team encouraging you and you turn and smile to them… which gives me the second I needed to snatch number 49 and to run to mine!

I was just 31. I feel alive and better than any day in my 20’s. They were fun, but I dwelled on sillyness. Now I try to worry less and enjoy more. There is a sense of peace. 49 is very good. I love that number. You know, none of my friends are under 55. Not even the man in my life. In my soul I feel like a an old woman who has seen and felt alot. I even have a sense of grandchildren and an old European mansion… Is that strange?

20th March sees me reaching 57. I see Jolene will also be 57, on the day my almost 33 year-old daughter gets married. Fifty was my best birthday but of course I’m still really only 21. Happy Birthday!
