Symbols of Faith…Good Friday

Angelshand

An angel drops flowers like rain from heaven. The background of tangled tree branches beginning to bloom, speak of rebirth. A symbol of life continuing.

Brokenglasstocut

The rusty window frame holds fragments of tinted glass. Light pours through reflecting soft notes of color. What do you hold on to when you are broken?

Jesusstainglass

Layers of time past and present…the broken stained glass renders Mary holding Jesus faceless. Though the light continues to shine spilling on those who walk by.

Smallchildstainglass

This tomb made me gasp. The blue eyes of a child, the ruby lips, the iron door delicately designed with flowers. The sorrow of death and the hope of an afterlife.

Pere Lachaise captivates the imagination. It takes you to a place deep within. Fragmented stone statues, engraved words, iron gates that are unlocked….names of people of the past and bouquets of flowers with fragrant dried petals.

Messages of life and death, are within the walls that surround it.

Womannoarms

A larger than life stone statue sits with her eyes closed, her arms are broken…her lips partly open as if she might utter a word. Stories vanished in the earth.

Lovers

The tomb of Heloise and Abelard, 12th century lovers, is one of the many stories that rest in Pere Lachaise.

  14. A beautiful post, full of light. “What do you hold onto when you are broken?”
To the knowledge that this, too, shall pass. And to the idea that just as the sky is always changing yet always perfect, so is my life. I have only to look for the light, and if I cannot find one, I must make one.

  22. Thank you for these photos and words Corey. This is somewhere that has always interested me, and to see it through your eyes is a bonus.
‘What do you hold on to when you are broken?’
The thought that no matter how bad things are, there is nothing that I can feel that someone before me has not felt, and that life will go on. It is up to me to find the way, and it must be a conscious choice to move forward with hope, and gratitude for what will surely come.

  23. Breathtaking… Angels hover over your heart, like dewdrops from heaven…

  30. While I love all the festivities that come with Easter, delicate decorations, chocolates and candies, Easter baskets; this is a beautiful reminder of what the celebration of Easter is really about. Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour. Rebirth, light, reflection and afterlife (eternity)all given by Him. Thank you Corey.

  31. Beautiful post Corey. I have been away on vacation and have missed your daily posts. I am playing catch-up!! Love everything!!
My Easter bring your family many blessings.

  32. Great sequence of pictures. I love religious art/architecture. And there’s something intrinsically wonderful about stone statues outdoors – the combination of art and nature I think.

  40. so very profound dear corey. happy easter to you and your family. i went to the Pere Lachaise site and remembered that i was there in 2003 visiting jim morrison’s grave and searching for nina. but she was not there. i had heard there was another cemetery perhaps mon montre? spelling may be wrong. my husband told me that jim used to be there and that he was moved because he caused high traffic that disturbed the likes of jean paul satre. BIGLOVE from germany, elsa
p.s. maybe one of these days (not anytime soon) i’ll make a trip in search of nina and you can join me.

  41. A blessed Easter to you. You are amazing with your words and images, and your links. How do you do it??

  42. Brokeness is a beautiful thing when healed by the hand of God.
Brokeness lets light shine thru the cracks, and the light shows the way…for others perhaps.
Beautiful post Corey, it touches me deeply.

    Corey,
Hauntinly beautiful and thought provoking…..Thank you for showing me something probably I will never see literally……..

  50. I just love ALL of these photos!
Hope you had a wonderful Easter Day!

  51. readytopretend

I was so delighted to walk with you through the quiet roads of that spiritual place. I was there in 1978, May 16th, with my father on my 21st birthday. I longed for the time that would allow me to explore and read and learn. Alas, I never have gone back as my journey has led me other places.
I spent the rest of that day in Momarte and had the evening at the Moulin Rouge. It was an amazing birthday.
    I thank you again.

  52. Sigh…I think I would be in heaven walking through that place, Corey. So many stories carved in stone, resting under the earth. And the broken windows remind me of jewels.

  53. These photos are nothing short of poetry…..glorious!
