The first day in May always finds France perfumed with Lily of the Valley. Yesterday, was no exception. The French tradition is that people give small bouquets to each other, as a token of friendship and happiness. I love this tradition. Flower vendors set up on country roads, and on city street corners. It is a day where the little flower bells, bloom white, and sings songs straight to the heart.
Of course, as yesterday was a holiday I went to the antique market! One of the stands had French country wares. It had a stone mortar for making pesto, a classic red tin bouillon can, and a mustard jar, which by the way was bigger than life. I don’t understand why mustard jars are this large, do you? Please do not say because the French like mustard, that is not the only reason…is it?
A pair of French antique armchairs appeared in the back of a van. We stared at each other. I do not need another armchair. The pair of armchairs seem to scream my name. I screamed back I do need another armchair, let alone a pair. I am certain BOUNTIFUL, or Elizabeth House, or Old Plank Road would have gobbled these up, with or without mustard, in a heartbeat. I waved a sad goodbye, and walked away.
To make matters worse I bumped into this, too-pretty-for-words-little-table. We looked at each other. Sized each other up. It seemed to say, "I like you, you like me…if you love me you’ll buy me!" But, that is the problem…I love most antiques, and there are many, many, antiques in France.
As I pulled myself away, I blew it a kiss, and thought at least I rubbed shoulders with it.
Just so you know, I like "tongue in cheek," type of antiques too. Powder puff antiques are not the only type of things that pull at my heartstrings.
A box of antique buckles wanted to play, "button, button who has the button," with me. Aren’t they pretty? Gee, who needs to go to museum, when there are a dime a dozen, French antique markets around?
I didn’t buy mustard jars, nor the armchairs, nor a buckle. The only thing I bought at the antique market yesterday was some Muguet (Lily of the Valley,) and it was the deal that made my day.
