Living with French Antiques

Frenchantiquehome_2

The wooden letter "B" was probably part of advertisement sign.

These Stone balls are for the garden, but I have them on our table.

The top part of the table… is a bench seat from the ancient arena in Arles.

A plaster statue of Joseph and Jesus take shade under a rusty urn.

Above there are engravings of famous old French guys in rough wooden frames.

Photo: A corner of my home. Places to buy in France, and of course here too.

What a beautiful display of antiques, you have such great taste. I love the stories behind the stone balls and the statue too…you teach that everything have their own stories, if only we look closer. Thank you.

  7. Shannon

Come to my house and decorate, please 🙂

  8. Alison Whittington

Oh, the conversation between Sacha and his friend… hysterical.

  9. I love all the natural earth tones and textures and the history, that bench-seat-table must have a few stories to tell.

  10. I’m in love with your vignettes…maybe I should have “cannon” balls too?!!!;-)

  11. My Melange

    Love the shabby urn!

Ooo I love the folded up note part! Chill bumps.

  14. Laura at Blame It on Paris

How beautiful your home must be, Corey.
And that folded up note…that’s enough to bring tears to my eyes.

  15. rochambeau

All of the colors look so natural and nice together.
You have a good eye for putting objects together and good taste.

  16. Paris Parfait

    Lovely tableau/vignette Corey.

  17. What a great photo and I love the link. I would buy one of everything there…if I hadn’t just quit my job! We have similar tastes, a friend once said coming to my house was like visiting the natural history museum. That’s a compliment, right? (heart) leau

  18. Beverly

What a beautiful corner of your house.
Are these the ball that Sacha explained to a friend?

  19. Merisi’s Vienna

I like the Joseph and Jesus statue, a very sweet father and son moment. Rather unusual, isn’t it?
Where the balls of stone used for any practical means? In Austria they like to decorate the rose gardens with colored glass globes, mostly red, blue or silver.

  20. I like how the letter B stands out against the wall (and everything else).

  26. You have such a magnificent eye Corey.
I just love this, the soft palette and the textures. So lovely. I want to create a photo wall with some of my vintage family photos too and I love your plain frames.
Sigh. A bench seat from an ancient arena in Arles. I love the details, they read like poetry to me.
Oh gosh, thank you for linking to your previous post about the statue. I had missed it and oh my, could you hear my heart skip a beat when you said you found a note among the folds?! What a treasure and what a responsibility to be caretaker to someone’s missive and prayers.
What a fun story about the stone balls! I think they make a lovely design element and I’d like some cannon balls of my very own! 🙂

  27. Di Overton

I love your posts with these little corners of your home. I have said it before and I will say it agin – you should be a set designer – you have such a good eye (well 2 actually)

Oooh we went to that arena in Arles on our honeymoon! Then we ran around following the Van Gogh painting trail, it was wonderful!

  30. Kristin

La beauté de la matière à l’état brut !

  31. Alexandra

Love the Joseph statue, and the balls would look great in my garden! Hmmm, maybe I’ll make some replicas seeing as I’m a bit far from France. I needed a project, so this will be my next.
I can’t imagine bringing those through customs. 😉 Although, I did once bring through a duffle bag full of coral and interesting stones I found on a beach vacation(long before 9/11). The look on the inspector’s face was priceless.
Lovely arrangement! Love the patinas. French, but I spy a little California influence there – simplicity and cleaness of line.

I’m in Paris as I write this and each night read your blog faithfully. Your advice on Flea Markets was on the money..and speaking of money, I bought so much at the Market that I have contacted British Airways and purchased additional weight(another suitcase)for my return trip on Wed. I was literally on a high at the Port Vanves market and scored wonderful old(1850’s) ledgers and school work books at the St. Ouen market. The more excited I got about the ledgers the less the sweet woman charged me. I managed 6 books and ledgers for a Euro each. One, in particular, is spectacular. She had no appreciation for it at all and thought it was just old books(she was a furniture dealer)!
Tomorrow is our last day…..it’s been a truly wonderful week plus. We(my 18 year old daughter and I) have not been to one museum but have gone up and down many many many side streets and seen so many wonderful off the beaten path sights. I wish I had a month here!

Hi Corey. I’m back and with a lot of catching up to do. I had to say though that I loved seeing your statue of St. Joseph. He is my favorite and I have a few of them around and take pictures of him whenever I find myself in a traditional church.
Congratulations to Chelsea on the completion of her exams and best wishes for complete success.
We stopped in at Starbucks in Willows last night – our last stop in a 12 hours drive home from Oregon. I could not help but think of you and that happy 90 minutes we spent there in February.

    Corey,
Your French antiques are beautiful! I look forward to the day when I travel to Paris and can visit the French flea markets featuring such beautiful items.

P.S. Congratulations on winning the Pillsbury bake-off. My mum told me the great news this afternoon and I am so pleased for you!

  41. I love that Europeans embrace rust, and antiquity. Things that age well should be cherished. This corner of your home is but a fraction of what makes it truly cosy and unique. YOU are also what makes it so!
