Bending Spaces

Stairwell_2

I was standing on a stool, with a can of paint in one hand and a paint brush in another.  Happily painting a wall in our hallway.  I love to paint interiors.  Suddenly without much warning I sneezed, in doing so I lost my balance nearly falling off the stool and down the stairs.  Luckily I didn’t… but the can of paint made a spectacular avant-garde design on the way down.

As I was cleaning up my Picasso I thought of my Mother, who years ago nearly fell off a ladder while painting. The can of paint landed upside down on her head running down into her ears and soaking her clothes.  Avocado green hair now that  is avant-garde.

Talk about painting my friend Ellen and her husband Frank have created a fantastic short film about George Rousse in "Bending Spaces."

Photo: The stairwell in my home not a drop of paint to be seen.

P.S.

I am adding this a day later. While writing about my Mother’s avocado green hair I knew there was more to the story and couldn’t remember it.  I spoke with my Mother today, and she reminded me. She added the punchline… She had a wedding to attend that evening.  She went,  green hair and all! My Mother is such a trooper!

When you next re-paint your bedroom walls, make sure the “new love lamps” have been removed !

Tell Chelsea never to pick up a paint can if she knows what’s good for her or likes her haircolor as is..

  3. I’m in the process of re-painting our upstairs living area…not a big fan of the clean-up though! The G. Rousse Durham Project is waaay COOL! it’s right up there with 3D chalk art on sidewalks. 🙂

  4. I’m happy it was only the paint can that rolled down though, what would we do without you?

  5. Your life is your own personal canvas.
Splash upon it all the paint you can.
    I love you
    Jeanne

Oh my gosh – I am so glad you are okay! I can not believe that story about your mother! What a sight that must have been. Definitely, one of those not funny until later moments. .

  9. First, I’m happy you’re OK and didn’t get seriously hurt!
Second, how did you manage to clean up the paint so well?
I have a project I put upon myself to paint and organize the room the kids use as their “playroom”. I’m STILL trying to clear out all the junk, LOL. I hope to get started by at least this weekend.

  10. Bless you! Glad you didn’t fall off or wear the paint in your hair. I’ve ended up with paint in my hair before, but just a splotch or two – I don’t think quite as much as your mother. What a sight that must have been!

  11. painting the walls is no easy task for novices…tee hee…take care and watch your step…blessings, rebecca

  12. What? You LOVE to paint interiors? The next time you come to California…consider yourself booked for a couple of days in my home! 🙂

  13. Oh…by the way!…I am soooooooooo glad you didn’t fall! Mercy me…what would we do without you!?!

  14. OMG Corey,
Glad you are OK, and the stairway is also OK.
    See, sneezing can be dangerous.
    Great picture!
I will check out your friend’s film.
    Thanks,
    Rosemary

  15. I was painting my living room years ago and made the mistake of leaving my dog inside the house. She went under my drop cloth on a table and pulled the paint bucket off, got her fluffy tail in the paint and took off through the house when I yelled at her. I finally got her outside and hosed her off-water based paint, thank god-and had to go inside and clean up paint everywhere, including my carpet. What a mess.

  16. Whoopsie! Glad the paint rolled down the stairs without you. Careful on those ladders.

  17. OH MY!! That was too close for comfort! Glad you are okay! …I loved your lamp post from yesterday! (er, uh lamp..post? )

  18. Glad you are okay so we can laugh about your paint incident.
This winter’s “project” is to decide on exterior house colors. I picked out green tones and got those swatches, got 8 different opinions from 10 people. Now I’m thinking yellows might be better. Good thing the decision doesn’t have to be made until May!

  19. Must’ve been something in the air. I kicked a can of paint down the stairs yesterday!
Were you tempted to leave the mess and call it a “technique”?
    Glad you weren’t hurt!

  20. oh oh OH!!!
First so glad you did not fall! and the lovely post of your wild friend and your mother with green hair!!….you are blessed with wonderful family and friends…AND that film and space and artist…
    Thank you!!

  21. Oh Oh!
I imagine myself e-xac-tly in the same situation….!!!!!
you always make me laugh! take care

  22. The Rousse project is amazing! Oh I would have loved to have seen a picture of that Corey Picasso piece…

  23. I do hope you are okay! This is the exact reason I leave all painting to my husband. Though I did see a glazed wall in my neighbor’s home that tempted me….but he will be home in a few short months. I might be able to leave it until then!

  24. Corey,
It’s a good thing you didn’t fall down the stairs! They look very steep. I can just picture your mother with the green paint in her hair.

Ladders were designed by the devil…;)
    Glad you are alright.
What do you call the color of your stairwell? It’s very… soothing…:)
    xo

  26. Ohh, please be very careful…I broke my ankle on our stairs and it was a long difficult recovery. I’m so glad you’re okay and the stairs cleaned up.

  27. la vie en rose

i love this story about your mother…too funny…and this pic is incredibly beautiful…what a gorgeous home you have…very serene…

  28. Glad your okay. Thank goodness!
Your steps and paint job look very nice.

  29. Will give those links a look!
I love the grey, and the silvered mirror . . .

  30. I once sneezed while bending over to put a tea bag in the bin in the cupboard under the kitchen sink, as my head came down with the sneeze, I hit my teeth on the bench and chipped my front tooth!
It’s great to know other people do such hilarious, stupid things!

  31. Sneezing feels so good. How can it be so bad?
    LOL!

  32. History repeating itself. Amazing.

  33. Oh noooo! Heeeee! Your mom IS a trooper to go with green hair to the wedding. What did your dad think? He must have been laughing all night!

  34. Oh yes, I checked out your friend George Rousse’s installation. How interesting and I just love how the city supported the art event.

  35. Isn’t that how Pollock got started? (As for your mother, did she start a new trend with her earth-mother hair?) That’s not a staircase I’d like to sleepwalk down…

So glad you’re safe, I like painting interiors too, it’s kind of therapeutic though I don’t do it often. Love your mother’s story, you are both so adventurous 🙂

  37. Laura at Blame It on Paris

I love that your mother went to the wedding! 🙂
The only thing that could top that story is if she was the bride! But then she wouldn’t be painting, right?
