Button Jar

Taking a button she crocheted around it in blue and added a tiny gold bird… then she tossed it into the button jar and left it up in the attic. As she walked down the stairs she smiled knowing that one day someone would find it and smile.

    (years later…)
“Go to your bedroom and stay in until you feel better”, said her mum, very angrily…
She went upstairs but she did not stop…
Her feet walked her to the top floor and she pushed the door of the attic…
Dust, spider webs, … she felt a little scared first.
A sun ray was beaming through the roof tiles… and she all of a sudden became aware of all the treasures piled up therein through the past years.
An old dollie, a baby cradle, hundreds of pots, … and there, as she lifted up her eyes, she spotted a jar. She was too short to reach it. So she used a few pots and climbed on top of them, she stood on tiptoe… and finally got the jar – it was full of buttons ! she opened it and poured all of them on to the floor…
She started to count them and when she came up to 20, she was stuck… she could not count further…So she sorted them out by colours …
Brown, grey, green… what about this tiny one? It was different !
… and a nice little birdie was in its middle…
She remained there watching it, dreaming over it… stroking it….
A noise shook her out of her dreams. She stood up, ran to the door with the tiny button in her hand, forgetting to put the jar back…. She dashed downstairs and smiled to her mum.
“Oh, I see you feel better…Have you got anything to tell me now?
    – The birdie says “thank you”. It felt so lonely in that jar !!!”
She opened her hand and showed the little button.
Her mother was surprised and she then showed a broad smile :
She could recover the same scene from her childhood, when one day she had put her own mother off and was sent to her bedroom…
The little bird had operated again!

  8. I have my grandmother’s button jar; what a treasure trove . . .

  9. ah, dearest Corey, a button jar is therapy for me. Just yesterday I bought a cigar box full, and I don’t need more buttons! OR, maby I do.I dumped them out on a towel to see what little treasures were there, ones with age and interest, and ones fairly new, odd doda’s and mini treasures tossed in, many memories. Old and rusty, new and shiny, some went to war, some went to the ball, some on shirts and some on shoes, and babys clothes. And all in it together. Like people.
My prayers continue for your family, I think of you often. Thank you for touching my life.
    Love,
    Marcie

I have a recent button jar that is being
filled with buttons from wool jackets that I am tearing apart for a hooked rug I’m making.
Just filled it with two. Found the label in the most beautiful soft wine wool jacket this afternoon from Moldova. Friends went there last summer on a Mission’s Trip. AND we
received a button birthday card this week.
It has the numbers covered with some random
buttons to take off and use!
Blessings on you and your dad.
    Healing from the Lord Almighty.
Praise Him for His grace and mercy.
    New every morning.

  26. There is something totally magic about buttons. Don’t know what it is. Anyone?? I loved nothing better as a young girl than playing with my mother’s and grandmothers collection, sorting, counting, discovering, ascribing values – even imaging what wonderful garment I might use them on one day. So much so that when my mother in law died and the family asked if there was something I would like to take from the house, I asked for her button tin.
Imagine my delight when many years later my own children (who never knew any of their grandparents) took the same delight with these very same buttons. They even had their own name for them and would often ask me “Mum, can we play with the ‘treasures’.”
This is a time for remembering your own childhood, Corey, and I feel you reliving your memories with your Dad. It’s only natural – let it flow.

  27. This touches my heart.. love nita

  28. It’s amazing how people take tiny pieces and turn them into art (so much patient and love)!

  29. I’m smiling too. 🙂
