Paper Bobeche and Chicken Leg Warmers

A collar from a Pirate costume?” Asked My Melange. Though Bonnie chimed, “It might be too big to be an
Elizabethan collar
.”  Ulla winked with her artistic nod and added, “I’ve used them as doll collars and skirts, santos sleeves and paper theater elements!

Billie, and many others thought the white paper thingy was, “… one of those little things that go on the end of a drumstick when you roast a chicken. No idea what they are called… but pasties comes to mind.”

But the little chick in the photo just turned its pretty head and flew away… somewhat amused until she realized that a drumstick meant her leg!

                     Hand

While many of you thought the paper thingy had to do with roasted animals, a few of you went in the guessing direction of pretty lacy girlie things. I definitely like pretty lacy girlie things compared to pot roast and chicken legs! Gee, remember I am a vegetarian and wouldn’t dare showoff a chicken leg with a lacy thing.

Charlotte from Spain guessed, “It’s something that is used to put pretty and fashionable creases in beautiful and ubber fashionable dresses and clothes!”

Martina waved from afar no, no, no, “Perhaps when it opens it can be used like a fan, the type used to shield the face when sitting in front of a fireplace fire? I heard these were used when women had lots of waxy makeup on in the 1700s.”

What is it about this paper thingy that most of you thought it surrounded roasted animal’s legs, but to top the cake Susan gave a chilling French response, and one that chopped things differently! Susan’s response, “OK if it is French, metal and used often then (now I kid you not) it is the cuff that was placed around the neck that was placed into the slot on the guillotine. That way if there was any movement before the blade dropped it would be held secure. Now I know you’re thinking what a morbid answer but it is a true fact.
I wonder what happened to Marie’?

Alas Jill put it straight (but not the right answer,) “A Queen’s collar? Although it might be a tad uncomfortable in metal! But would certainly keep one’s posture straight…”

Oh Marie-Antoinette I am so sorry for the things you must endure on Tongue in Cheek!

My Cousin Chris took the air filter theory to a new level… did he guess or was he confessing a crime? “Crankcase Breather Filter-1959 Honda Trail 90 with 107 Big Bore kit and Mikuni 24mm Flatslide carburator.(stolen from your Dad shop by your brothers Zane & Matt) Benvolent Portuguese Brotherhood & Touring Club.”

The most creative answer and the only one to say anything like it was Isabel’s:

“Do you know how, sometimes, you tie a ribbon around your finger so you’ll remember something? Well, it you put that around your finger, you will definitely not forget what it is you want to remember!! That one is specifically designed for husbands… Where can I buy one?”  Heck, where can I buy one!!! Let me buy a ton of them!

….and the winner of the right answer is????

Constance lite on the answer first with, “A candle surround. You put it in the candlestick so that the wax doesn’t get on the holder or table”

Diogenes filled in with the word perfect name tag, “A paper bobeche, The things used to collect wax from a candle?”

I always enjoy your guessing games… I like reading all the (MANY !!!) answers… trying to follow up each track…
When I saw the picture of THE object I first thought of a flower-pot holder but the metal detail could not do…
Now please tell me : You use the term “bobèche”. Is that the English word too?
I thought it was “socket” (or “sconce”) …
AND the word “socket” can be related to “leg warmer”…
I like this idea ! (Some readers were not so far…)

  4. As a candle maker, I should have known and I even questioned it when the one gal said ‘goes around a candle’, but the photo looked too large and I was thinking pillar or jar candle, not a delicate taper…this was good Corey. Your beautiful delicate photo sure had us all stumped…FUN…

  5. Today is my birthday and you are cordially invited to my party down by the river. Wear loose fitting clothes and don’t drive due to the excessive amounts of food and champagne that is on offer.

  6. Well, thank goodness my birth control guess was wrong…

  7. What a great idea! I must have some!! Can I buy them online? These are just too adorable and perfect to use in some mixed media collage/assemblage. And on my dinner table…!

  8. A paper bobeche???? That’s an accident waiting to happen. Since I almost died in a fire caused by an unattended candle burning down just the thought of this makes me very nervous.
It is however, a nice exercise in paper folding.
