Flying over the Edge

                            IMG_7468

Along the Northern California coastline the views from Highway 1 are nothing short of spectacular. If you are the driver you must focus on the road ahead or possibly find yourself going off the edge. Each bend, and Highway 1 is full of them, offers shots straight up of raw beauty. A free-spirit, tempting feeling comes over me to fly off the cliff like a bird… Crazy but true.

Though for French Husband and son crazy is second nature….

Signs like this to French Husband and family seem to say, “Welcome.” When I saw it I knew exactly where I would find them…. Over the cliff, flying like birds and enjoying every minute of it. I stood in high anxiety, yet with camera in hand.

I really think I should go ahead of my family and spray paint over the danger signs:

” Welcome easy breezy trail ahead any baby could do it.”

Come on grab your guts, sturdy shoes, more guts, and tag along. Tomorrow I will show you how they got there.

I will be posting about our holiday for the next few days… a mermaid will appear on Monday to lighten the frightful adventure of tomorrow.

oh what is it about the glorious ocean and our nearness to it that brings such a sense of being grounded- an over all completeness and well being?
where did you discover the amazing studio?
My heart leaps in joy for all of you.

There is something about the pounding of the ocean against the shore and rocks that really grounds me. It’s almost as if the ocean is saying “Life goes on no matter what”. I love it. Got to admit though I’m with you – standing well back with camera in hand. There is no way you would find me out there clambering on those rocks. Love the pictures as always. Enjoy your holiday.

Beautiful pictures…reminded me of a time when I lived in Monterey.
I found your blog though a photograph you took in Pompeii when after reading an online article in the NY Times this morning about Pompeii I decided to search for more images.
I was intrigued reading about your life and seeing your photographs so I did a pretty complete read through. Your life looks lovely. I recently left the US for love so your story resonated with me on multiple levels.

  4. Thank you for these posts about the coast, I am transported back home to the Oregon coast where I lived prior to coming to Alabama a year ago. What a treat for your clan. I look forward to more. There is nothing like a bunch of rocks, to make a man a boy again, my man did the same, and he is 60!! Sigh,,,,I just prayed and watched as the look on his face was too happy. Speaking of faces,,does FH “ever” take a bad picture? You lucky lady. That reminds me,,how are the young romances progressing??? Joy in your day Corey!

  5. Your life is always a slice of heaven.
    Thanks for sharing.
    I love you darling one.
    Love Jeanne

  6. Corey,
    Awesome, AWESOME photos!
I think I almost drowned in that cove back in 1965. 😉

  7. Sweet Repose

I too walked those dangerous, alluring cliffs back in ’93 with my brother, every step wanted to pull prose from my lips as my camera flashed at all the beauty. Boys just must be like that…always saying ‘watch this’…crazy Brother…

I love that area of the coast. It’s been many years since I’ve been there. (The air smells like heaven) Part of my family used to live in FT. Bragg. I remember my sister and sitting on the front porch of an old country store over 30 years ago in West Port, eating It’s-It’s. Part of my family just took the exciting ride on the ‘lost coast’ north of there. They are back safe and sound. Thanks for beatiful pix and can’t wait to see said ‘mermaid’.

I thought it might be Westport – haven’t been up there for years, but I remember how pretty it is there.
I always want to climb the rocks along our coastline, but unlike French Husband and Son, I believe the signs and stay on firmer ground.

  10. I loved driving (well, riding) along Highway 1. Beauty at every turn and so many places to pull off and enjoy it. More power to your family for taking the hand of adventure and running with it! Can’t wait to hear and see more.

Beautiful, rugged shoreline……so spectacular in it’s beauty. I get double nervous when driving these types of roads. I don’t think I really want to know how they got out there. YIKES.
The white knuckle road that I remember is something called “Road to the Sun”. It’s between Montana and Idaho I believe. Very dramatic and dangerous.

  12. I like your idea for fixing the sign – let us know if that works, hee hee…
So glad you found your Paradise, Corey!

  13. Ed in Willows

I think French husband and I would get along great. Signs like that are an open invitation to me for exploration. Den and I rented a house 30 minutes south of Ft. Bragg for our 25th anniversary. It sat on a 200′ cliff overlooking the ocean. I could just sit there for hours watching the waves. I’m glad you found time to get away with your family – Ed

  14. Such beautiful scenery. I love the sound of the ocean. It is so calming and soothing. I look forward to what you share tomorrow.

  18. Wow it’s a beautiful place!
    Enjoy your holiday Corey!

  19. Once again, more beautiful scenery. Not a fan of heights, so I could just imagine how FH and family got down there. EEEEK!

  20. Sue McG

Corey as usual you have me laughing, I like your idea of spray-painting the signs, but I suspect they’d catch on to your scheme because the sheer drops beyond the signs would entice them over anyway 🙂 Good luck with that!

  21. Rosemary

    Sounds like fun to me!!
    I love it up there!

  22. Sounds like a fun (if not somewhat harrowing) time together! I’m glad you and the fam are soaking up the pleasures of the Pacific coast. xx, JP/deb

  23. My Mélange

Oh Corey, thanks for the memories!!! The coastline there is so beautiful, yet VERY dangerous. Quite an adventurous family you have 😉

  24. Alison Whittington

I know it’s only PCH in the south, but that’s still how I think of Hwy 1… I drove north from L.A. to Monterey once and it was incredible… and I would gladly do it again, as long as it was going north… I don’t think I would make it through a drive headed South. I would forget to breath and suffocate or my heart would stop or something…

what great scenery. i confess to being someone that would go past the danger sign too….but i have almost gotten to the point that i can resist touching something with a do not touch sign on it 😉
