Slow Dancing on the Plank

                           IMG_7520

Do you see the plank of wood extending from one rock to the other? That is just a small part of the craziness you must endure to go to the other side. Sacha said, “Mom it isn’t that bad except the board is tilted. But hey if you fall it is a straight shot down to the ocean.” Don’t you just love how young people see things without fear?

The straight shot down to the ocean was about 15 feet or more. I didn’t go out there…let alone with a yard stick so I could be wrong. But the straight shot didn’t look as easy as Sacha made it out to be. Can you see the guys on the rock? Don’t they look like seashell or something. If I was out there I would be a barnacle!

When Sacha and Sam (my nephew) started to walk across I wanted to scream, “One at a time.” But I thought if I scream it might scare them so I swallowed my fear and zoomed in with my camera as a way to be close at hand. Then I thought oh no what if they fall and I see them with agony on their faces? I am a bit dramatic by fault.

At that very moment Sacha stopped, and I knew like only a mother’s know when something is going to happen. He looked straight ahead, bent his knees slightly in a demi plie to set himself up for a turn. I lowered my camera and yelled, “Sacha NO!!!”  But as the “No” was coming out of my mouth he landed. At that moment and for the briefest moments I had a duel thought: 1) Why God did you give me this child? I am going to vomit and then throttle him! 2) Then thank you God for giving me this boy! Wow that was really cool, I wonder if he is going to do it again?

He didn’t. I was relieved… though I wish I hadn’t lowered my camera!

Slow dancing on the plank? No rock and roll! “Do you want to dance he asked?”

    enjoy the weekend corey!

  2. Young men can be so goofy, I think they love to tease Mom in their teens, it’s so natural,,my heart was in my throat reading this. I wonder how the plank got there in the first place,,,,ah,,well it must have been a group of young men that did that! Of course. I guess we wouldn’t have things like the golden gate bridge without the amazing man. Gotta love em. And pray as they spread their wings.

  5. Eeeeee! There are some things a mother shouldn’t have to watch. I’d have been cowering behind a rock someplace and covering my eyes. You are a strong woman.

  6. great pictures in your last couple of posts. looks like an amazing place. only having 2 girls i don’t quite understand the adventures boys get up to at times, lol! i do remember being a leader on a youth camp a couple of years ago and seeing the excitement on the young guys faces when they found a huge hole in the ground covered with vines and branches and went running and jumping straight down into the unknown and came out laughing and covered in cuts and scratches. Go figure? you’ve just gotta love that enthusiasm for life and adventure.

I simply don’t know what to do with these people who insist on flying through life without a net. I’ve got one in my family and she’s been doing that since the moment she was born.
I would have told the French Husband that I would be sitting that one out.

  8. But MOM, it’s not that far of a fall…. oh honey don’t worry we’re just a bunch of boys!

  9. At least I when I yell at my son for doing something “really silly” I can tell him to think of his two sons! That usually changes his mind…on some things! haha

  10. Sweet Repose

There it is again…the guy thing…but what a wonderful chance for you to take shots of them in their element…is it primal???

Oh Corey! How you have my sympathy with your adventuresome family….I get it, I truly get it. Last year, my dear son, who was 18 at the time, insisted on jumping out of a perfectly good airplane! Can you imagine??? He said, “Come on mom, it won’t be so bad…come on and watch me.” There was no way on earth I could watch that happen, so I stayed home and he called when he went up and had a friend call as soon as he landed safely. I think that I stopped breathing for at least 20 minutes!!!!

  12. Oh, to have the courage to live life to the limit as they do!

and then there is the photo of Chelsea after her skydiving last year. Quite the family of adventurers you have there Corey.

You’ve captured one of my most favorite spots on earth! I will definitely be back to look at these lovely pics over and over again. We always camp at the place right down on the beach (by camp, I must clarify RV with a BIG bathroom and a great kitchen — I’m a softy). The kids run on the beach freely, but I rejoice that we are beach level — no planks, no climbs because my husband is a daring-doer and my youngest got ALL of those genes MAGNIFIED! She’s fearless!! But then, I guess you may be familiar with that kind of kid. ; )
Thank you so much for generously sharing your private time. We will be going to stay in Westport later in the year after high season. [My husband checked out your little cottage … maybe an anniversary getaway?] XO!

  17. I almost tossed my cookies just reading this! I have a son who is so much like Sasha, and my heart has jumped up from my throat more than once! =)

oooh – love your pictures – silly boys! I remember going to Ft. Bragg every year with my grandparents, parents, siblings. I had such a great time at their cabin on the ocean, collecting driftwood, shells, etc. but nothing this daring! I am headed to Chico in two weeks- wish I was going as far as the coast, but not this trip. I have my 30-yr high school reunion at Lake Almanor. I hope it’s not blistering hot! Jamie V in MT

  19. BOYS!!! LOL!!! You gotta love them. And with the father he has, I think he inherited the wild-gene…

My goodness, My heart fell to my knees!!
On the one hand, to have your son’s fearlessness is great but on the other hand I would be a wrinkled up prune from the worry!! There’s a verse from the book by Kahlil Gibran on children that says: “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth…”. I’m paraphrasing but there is alot of truth in that poem. How far do you let them go??

Those pictures almost made my arrythmia come back, wow…I too have one offspring like that and he did a similar thing to me on a canoe trip in the North West Territories. Some days I wonder how he managed to survive his 42 years or how I survived. Gorgeous place and beautiful pictures…ciao

  22. Looks scary ~~~~~ is the boyfriend still around?

  23. Betty @ She’s Sew Pretty

OMG, OMG, OMG! I have one of those dare devil sons too and I know exactly the feeling of holding your breath and letting it out with a whoosh.
I love that drive and that area. So gorgeous and breath taking all by itself without daredevil sons!

  24. Too high and narrow for me – perhaps your guys have a scret wish to join the circus!!

  25. Caffienated Cowgirl

Ah…the constant struggle between fear and freedom. It was only when I became a mother that I developed that dual sense as well. It’s that gene.
    Great photos though 🙂

  26. I am deathly afraid of heights – and my husband is the extreme opposite as he erects steel buildings for a living and is always ‘up high’. I shivered when I saw your photos – I could never walk across that!
