To MAC or Not… update

Note:

MAC WINS BY A LANDSLIDE.

Thank you for the many responses about to MAC or not.

I think the VISTA application is what makes French Husband shudder, and he honestly believes that MAC would be better for my style of computing. Since a new Dell would mean a change to VISTA, French Husband thinks now is the time for me to change to MAC.

Techno-dunce (as Cheryl coined in her comment) is what I am… since French Husband is the brain when it comes to fixing my problems with the computer, and since he has never worked on a MAC (The old laptop that was his and that I have used for three years is falling apart, the blue screen happens regularly.) So who is going to come over to France (with an orange beret to help me?)

I really appreicated everyone's words of advice! Especially how many of you asked your family to add their two cents to the blog… I now have a million dollars of valuable infomation!

Jeni's daughter Morganne thanks for the tips about photo applications, and DONOVAN your comment hit home on more than one account. Though this one sentence made my day…

"How important are aesthetics?"

  1. Let us know how you like it. My computer now is XP and I will fight to keep it as long as possible, since I don’t want to change to Vista.

  2. I had a Dell computer that had some trouble and, after the tech guy came to our house to fix it several times, Dell finally replaced it with a new one…but it has VISTA and I HATE it!!! So I think you and French Husband are wise to stay away from it! 🙂
    P.S. I wish I had a MAC!

Enjoy it! You won’t regret it!
Anyway, if you do miss any of your icky PC programs, you can always run it on the mac too in an emulation program.

  4. The comment “How important are aesthetics?” was Tongue in Cheek, I presume. I hope.

  5. Corey-
Sometimes I think we *think* alike.
After waiting to buy my MAC until the recent upgrade- I decided to get the old version ’cause I don’t like the way the new one looks.
So, I guess aesthetics are important to me. Not the only factor- but it weighs in for sure!! After all- you have to keep, look and use this thing everyday for the next X amount of years- you better like the way it looks!
And since I have been researching this for a while- know that most people think MACS are sexy looking. So, you better warn FH- there might be a new sexy beast in your house soon 🙂

  6. Corey,
I recently read in the New York Times, Technology Section, this article by Stephen Williams:
“How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Tolerate Vista”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/technology/personaltech/09basics.html?scp=6&sq=vista&st=cse
I found Wiliam’s suggestions very illuminating and extremely helpful!
All four kids are now proud owners of Macs, I continue to function well with our old DELL desktop (love it, actually) and a Fujitsu Siemens laptop. I have recently added a small mini-notebook (netbook) to our computer fleet. I carry it with me on travels, it gives me access to the web in a much more convenient way than any Blackberry, even the typing is easy, and with the help of an external harddrive, I can load down and edit my photos while on the road.

  7. Corey, Congrats on making a decision on your NEW computer! You will have to keep us updated on how you’re getting along with it. I for one love the LOOK of the MAC (so clean looking) and when I saw my husband use it (when he was in the Navy, his graphics department had MACs and PCs) I thought it was so cool how the menu comes up from the bottom of the screen. Funny how little things like that make me excited. 😉

  8. I’m glad you went with Mac! I’ve never regretted my first computer purchase being a Macbook!!

  9. Typing to you on a MAC from MA 🙂 I’ve even taught on a MAC – to seniors! Though it is my daughter who is a true MAC whiz – perhaps the orange beret should be tossed in her direction! Any problems just ask and what I can’t answer, I’ll field to her.

  10. Yay…a new Mac user! You will be so glad, once you get over trying to make everything harder than it needs to be 🙂
    Seriously.
    Just relax and enjoy.

  11. You will never look back. I’ve been a Mac girl since 1991. I’m thrilled that someone who is as design savvy as you will be joining our ranks!

  12. Just had to comment here… I’ve used MAC since 1994 — won’t buy anything but a MAC. Anyway, three years ago, my mother turned 75 and though she never owned a computer she was curious. So, I bought her a MAC for her 75th! Really, if she can learn it and use — which was relatively quick — anyone can. Besides the aesthetics and much intuitive design, incredibly stable OS, the ease of use factor is high — higher than high even, since my mother signed on!
PS — she loves everything about it.
    Enjoy your new MAC!

  13. I have always been a Mac user. It makes life so easy.
