My Mother Thanks You and this blog thing.

                    stack

Ready and waiting.

My mother was preparing for her annual Halloween Buffet. Anyone who knows my mom knows they are welcomed to come to her home after they have gone "Trick or Treating". I called her around two in the afternoon, she was busy making popcorn balls (My mom likes to say, "The children know I don't give candy.") and was planning to make the salads (a welcome treat after eating too many sweets). She seemed happy yet mentioned that her hip hurt, though she brushed it off with, "I think I have been standing too much…"

My sister in laws (Joy and Diane) noticed that at the Halloween Buffet that my race-around-mom was sitting… she was not her peppy self. She mentioned to them that her left hand was bothering her, but reassured them that often when it rains her arthritis acts up. My little niece Maci spent the night.

When she woke up she felt funny, her hand and leg seemed numb, her jaw had a mind of its own and her words were slurred. She couldn't manage the phone on her own. Maci was her guardian angel, she called her Daddy, my brother Mark. Meanwhile my mother's friend Holly called her, and raced over when she heard my mother's voice. My brother took her to the hospital.

——————-

Today is Daisy's baptism. My mother was to stand in my place as her Godmother. My sister in law Shelley will take our place. Please pray for Daisy and her family… it has not been easy for them.

—————–

My mom is at the hospital, the same one that my father was in…. it feels odd for my family, too many memories surround that place to add more.

My mother has an army of love and attention with family and friends at her side. She is loved.

I wanted to talk to my Mom, but as there wasn't a room for her at the hospital, she was waiting in the hospital's hallway without a phone… my sister in law Suzy broke the rules and put her cell phone to her ear… My mother's voice though slurred sounded strong. She laughed, made jokes and told me not to come home. I started to cry. It felt good to hear my mother's voice, her trying to put on a good face… she is a tough cookie who holds alot inside. She asked me, "Do you have the whole world praying for me? That blog thing is powerful, tell them thank you I need their prayers."

Tests show a mild stroke, though it seems it started the day before, possibly right after I called her. There is a small spot on her right brain. Today they will know more about that spot and what it means…

Everyone, even my mother tells me to wait, and I am terrible at waiting.

  7. Barbara Sydney Australia

Its very late Sunday night here in Sydney and I have just farewelled my son and his wife off on their holiday to Hawaii, LA and New York. As I pray that they will travel those thousands of miles safely, I am also praying for a much loved stranger’s Mum who is also travelling her own journey back to good health. This “powerful blogthing” has made this huge world very small indeed!

  8. You are terrible at waiting… so I will wrap my prayers around you too.

Dear Corey, Your dear mother’s name will be in our book of intentions this morning. St. Rose of Lima parish will be praying for her, as will I.

Dear Corey, Sending prayers and best wishes to your mother; hoping for some good news! Thinking of you and all your family…xo

  11. Corey,
My love and prayers for your Mother, you and your family.
My father had a mild stroke in the right brain last December. It sounds very similar to your Mothers stroke. He went into a rehab hospital for strokes for three weeks, and then had Physical therapy in his home for about another month.
It takes time to recover but do not give up. He is 88 now. I just bought him the book by Jill Stolte Taylor, My Stroke of Insight. She is a neuro scientist that had a stroke. She give some good tips on helping others in recovery.
Give your mother time and lots of hope, she can do it! I will continue praying.

  12. Oh Corey – I am praying for your Mom and for you too – I hope she bounces right back home very quickly and carries on her fine baking tradition with all her grandchildren around her.

  13. Dear Corey ~ I don’t visit all that often, but I am glad to have done so just now, so that I can add my prayers to all the others. I hope all your anxieties will soon be eased, and that your Mum will be on the way to full recovery. Mum’s are precious, even for grown-up girls and boys!

  14. Dear Corey ~ I don’t visit all that often, but I am glad to have done so just now, so that I can add my prayers to all the others. I hope all your anxieties will soon be eased, and that your Mum will be on the way to full recovery. Mum’s are precious, even for grown-up girls and boys!

  15. What you report about your Mom’s condition sounds encouraging. I speak as a speech therapist who has specialized in rehabilitation for people who have had strokes and other neurological insult; and as a person who believes in the power of lots of love and support as much as I believe in good therapy. So I add my love and caring to the abundance that already surrounds you both.

  16. Thinking of you and praying for your family.
Tell your mom yes the whole world is praying for her!!!

  17. You and your mom and your entire family will remain in my thoughts today…..postivie thoughts. Add my prayers to the numerous others out there who will be sending strength and love your way.
Stay positive, phone often and hop on the nearest plane if that is what you need to do.
You mom being able to talk and joke is very encouraging.
My heart goes out to you.

  18. Those miles again. After all that you went through with your Dad the fear must be tremendous right now. Hang on in there Corey – Mummy Amaro sounds like a tough cookie surrounded by love, and full & quick recovery from strokes is commonplace today. Will say a prayer x

  19. Despite the anxiety, Corey, take a deep breath, and feel the love, the prayers, the special thoughts flowing your way and on to your mother. She’s in God’s hands – the best possible place she can be.
Know that you are loved and all is as it should be.
    Keep faith,
    Laure

Waiting like this is never good, but you are strong.

  30. Dear Corey, Your mom’s comment: “Do you have the whole world praying for me? That blog thing is powerful, tell them thank you I need their prayers.” made ME cry! Yes, the blog thing is powerful, as are our prayers for you all. And, as word from the Lord about waiting: “Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength, they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Those words are for you and your mom. God bless you both! Cy

  37. Corey, I just read about your Mom today. Reasure your Mom that we’re all surronding her in thought with care and healing prayers. And my heart goes out to you. With a bog, big hug.
    Love*

  38. Prayers and good thoughts!
We love you, Corey, and your sweet family too.
    Stay strong!

  39. Gosh I’m sorry…. I hope your mom has a quick and full recovery and that all is well soon! My dad had a small stroke when he was about 75 that sounds a lot like the one your mom had and he got completely better and never had another one and lived to be 90.
But since these things can sometimes go either way, I’m going to stick my neck out where it probably shouldn’t be and say that maybe you should go see your mom now even though she says not to come. A friend once told me to go home earlier rather than later when my mom was sick and I’ve always been grateful to him for that advice.

  40. Corey…of course we will pray for your mother and Daisy and her family. You and your family have remained in my prayers since the beginning of your father’s illness.

  41. Ruth Schall

    Corey,
My prayers are with your mom, your family and you as you once more, and way too soon, face life’s trials that we all have to bear. Your mom is strong and has a loving family pulling her through this. Ruth

  46. Oh, Corey, no words can convey how I feel for your Mom and all of you.

  52. Dear Corey and family,
Prayers are with you all, as well as your dear mother. Blessings for little Maci! Thank goodness she spent the night.
    Laura

  53. Lots of love sent from me to you and your family. So sorry that you are going through this, so soon after your homecoming. Your mama sure has been through a lot this year. I admire her strength. Making her Halloween buffet, tending her garden….living her life despite her great loss. She is surrounded by love from near and a far.

  54. thinking of you and your family Corey. Sending you love and hope.
A big hug. Waiting with you

  55. I didn’t read either of your two posts until just now, but last night I dreamed of birds, a kaleidoscope of colors, tiny bodies with tinier pulses moving their ribcages, fast & slow fluttering wings, happy happy twitterings and conversations among them, so I’m sending all that to you and to your mother. It just seems appropriate.

  56. Tell your Mom that a whole army is enveloping her(and her family)in prayer in Upstate NY.

  57. Corey~ praying for you and your family.
Oprah just had Dr. Oz on explaining what happens when a stroke occurs. I understand about the “spot”. Mild is the key word Corey. Your neice is an angel and was very smart in calling her dad. Your mom’s friend going to her right away too played a big part. We should all listen to our bodies. Some signs are very pronounced and some are not… but none the less they are signs. Strokes run on my dad’s side of the family. I have to be aware of those signs as well.
Oh Corey, your family has been through so much… and are always there for eachother. I know this must be hard for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
    Many hugs

  58. My prayers are with you and your mother. My mother had one 15 years ago, so I feel your pain. She survived the stroke and is 80 now.

  59. My heart is in an hospital in America.

  60. I just happened on your site today; please tell your Mom that someone in NY will be praying for her.

  61. Oh honey:( I’m here…thank goodness for your little neice what a smarty pants she is…good thoughts and prayers for your mama’s health are being sent from me. xo

  62. praying for your mother, you, and your family. y.

  63. much love is being sent out into the universe.
    namaste dear friend.

  64. Corey,
I will continue pray for your mother and Daisy and her family. My mom-in-law had several petite strokes. This sounds quite abit like what she had. A very scary thing to go through as usually they know something isn’t right they just don’t know what it is exactly. Thank God for Maci.

  65. Ed in Willows

Corey – Deb and I are nearby if you need anything on this end. You and your entire family are in our thoughts.

  66. I love your Mom just from all you have written about her. She truly is a tough cookie and will undoubtedly be back home and able to cook Thanksgiving dinner. Prayers will continue to be sent for Mrs. Amaro and your family.

  67. May God’s goodness and peace be with you, Corey. I know how hard it is to live so far away from your family. Thinking of you and your family. Hugs, Ladelle

  68. Healing thoughts are winging their way to your mom from my little corner of the world, and warm wishes to you as well, Corey. I discovered your blog just after losing my 89-year-old mom this spring, and what you wrote about your father really resonated. Your mom is strong and bien entourée, but it’s so hard to be far way. Bon courage, Mary in MN

  69. Oh Corey, my heart is with you and your family. I know your Mother means it when she says to ‘wait’ but if you feel a strong urge to be there don’t hesitate, Go! Listen for God’s voice, he will be there!
    Jill

  70. your momma is correct…there is a whole world of prayers at your asking…

  71. Waiting is the worst! I have no patience for waiting….I am the “I want answers NOW” person which can be frustrating to others.
Hearing your Mom’s voice must have been like a salve on your hurting heart…knowing she was cognizant and asking about the blog and prayers. That made me smile as I am completely convinced that the collective of sending healing vibes, wellness thoughts, prayers, whathaveyou….works on a level we’ll never understand.
I have added my voice and will continue to!
    XOXOXOXO

  72. Cabra Seis

love and prayers to Aunt Dolores and to all of you.I know she will be all right.

  73. Tell your Moma, we’ve got her covered. Now, as to you – well, I am sending warm thoughts and hugs your way. When they say knowledge is power, they forget to mention that you sometimes have to wait for the knowledge. Breathe deeply and know that we are all rooting for Moma. Cheers.

  74. Dear Corey, ((HUGS))and a shoulder, whenever you need it.

  75. Corey, I just read both of your posts on your mom. I will be keeping each of you in my prayers.

  76. All of my positive thoughts and prayers go to you and your mother this day.
Love to you and your family.

  77. if this is a small spot.. after 24 hours it started.. it means.. she will be allright ..
I wish the best for her and your family and you.. I wish the best and fastest cure.. without a trace of the stroke..
    love and hugs.. from istanbul..

  78. Tell your sweet mama we are on our knees praying and lifting you all up as you wait for much needed answers. Hang in there sweet friend.
    love and blessings

  79. Corey,
You know that your mother (and the rest of you) are in our prayers.

  80. Your mom’s stroke sounds exactly like my dad’s. He is doing fine, although he does have some residual weakness on his left side. His speech is fine, except that he does slur his words when he’s tired.
They will probably want to do some tests on your mom’s carotid arteries to see if there is any blockage. They do try to find the cause of the stroke.
    ~elaine~

  81. I’m still thinking of your Mom. Still pushing out my most positive thoughts towards her and your family and you. 🙂

  82. Corey,
the danger with stroke is that the patient gets to the hospital too late, not having recognized the symptoms when they first showed up. Now that your mom is in medical care, she should be safe and out of the most dangerous phase. Women’s brains have a much better ability to recover after strokes than men have, and your mom’s a fighter, I am sure she will be back home in no time. More then ten years ago, my mom suffered a stroke that left her in coma for a week, unable to stand, sit, walk, eat, or to speak afterwards. Thanks to the competent rehab, the very caring nurses and doctors there, and her own strong will, she recovered all her abilities again. I am sure so will your mom, only much faster.
    All the best!

  83. standing, kneeling, and laying prostrate in prayer with you Corey

  84. We are never given more than we can handle but I am sure it seems like this is the hardest. Know that North to South and East to West prayers are going up for you, your mother and the family. Sally

  85. Corey
    Waiting is hard..
so prayers for you and your mom!
    Mim

  86. Add prayers from North Carolina. I will bake some cookies so you know they are being baked while your Mom is getting better.

  87. Leslie Garcia

    Dear Corey,
I have the strongest feeling that your Mother will be just fine…she has so much love all around her right now…she has made it through so much and she sounds so strong. My mother has been through 2 strokes…and she has recovered from both. It is such a scary time right now…I hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers Corey…GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
    Love,
    Leslie

  88. Waiting is, indeed, difficult. But we will wait and pray with you. Thank you for the update, Corey.

  89. I am praying for your mom. ‘not, yet, Lord. Not so soon after Corey’s dad. Please wait a little while longer’.

  90. delurking:
I’m praying for your mom and for your family. Wishing you much love and a hug too.

  91. Dear Corey, I’ve been busy these last few days and just now caught up on your blog. I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s stroke. And I’m sorry you’re so far away. I will be praying for your mother and for all of you and the decisions that need to be made. ((hugs))

  92. Oh Corey, you and your mom are in my thoughts! I hope, everything will be allright.

  93. Oh dear Corey…I’ve had a couple of very busy days, and I just sat down to catch up on the “French life.” I’m so sorry to hear about your mother’s health problems.
I know she’s in great hands, and I pray that the doctors find the best answers to help her heal.

  94. Healing prayers to your mum and family!

  95. Praying for your mom. Praying for you. Praying for Daisy. Who else? I have lot’s left? Lot’s.

  96. Love you Corey and your Mom too. Constant prayers are going out.
    B

  97. so very many prayers and much love being sent to you and your family.

  98. Oh Corey, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom and I will truly keep her in my prayers, along with you and the rest of your family. May you find strength in the prayers coming to you from around the world.

  99. Corey~
My dad went through the same thing–including the “small spot on the brain” back in May. I was recuperating from surgery and couldn’t travel to him, so I can empathise with the waiting impatiently. However, I did visit in July, and he was much stronger. I know your family near your mom will work to get her everything she needs, but please make every effort to get her to see a neuropsychologist. My dad had a therapy program after 4 hours of testing with the neuropsychologist, and I am convinced it’s why he had such a great recovery.
God bless her, you and the rest of your family.

  100. Debrah (Australia)

Lots of love….I will be praying!

  101. Dear Corey,Marty,Matthew,Mark and Zane, may it bring comfort for you all to know the world sends ours heart filled prayers, remembering one of your past post about your Mom and her names first tough, also faithful and firecracker.Knowing her this is all so true.Sending my love

  102. Yes, indeed. We will all pray!
    ((Corey and mom))

  103. Corey – Sending healing thoughts toward your mother; and peace, strength, and patience 🙂 to you. I can relate to your dilemma of “should I stay or should I go” as I wait 600 miles away from my mother to hear news of her appointment for a brain tumor biopsy. I will go very soon.

  104. Here is the best encouragement I can think of for you today . . .
“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”
    Isaiah 40:31
Thankful for those surrounding your mom. Waiting with you.

  105. Still with you, Corey…I’m praying for your family..Big Hugs…God Bless, Lisa-Vet

  106. Yes, tell her that she does have a whole army praying for her and for her whole family.

  107. I’m so sorry to read about your mother’s stroke, Corey but how wonderful that you were able to speak to her. I’ll be thinking of you both and here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

  108. Oh, I have been in this situation…with my own mother saying ‘don’t fly out, just wait’…my prayers are with your mother…from another California girl, via Germany.

  109. Corey,
Your mama can feel your love and the support of your friends and loved ones around her- keep some for yourself too – we are sending it your way too..
Waiting and knowing what to do is always difficult- time will tell you what you need to do.
I’ll be thinking of you and your dear maman.
    Hugs all around,
    Anna

  110. I’m so glad you got to talk to your Mother, Corey! I’m not very good at waiting either.
I’ll keep her in my prayers and sweet little Daisy too.

  111. Marie-Noëlle

If today’s “blog thing” could come to your door, Mrs Amaro, -I mean for you and not for your pop corn- , you would be really impressed !
Get better very quickly, Mrs Amaro, so that we can have coffee or tea together -even if virtually only…

  112. Corey,
I can’t even imagine how hard it is for you to wait or to be away from your Mom at this time. I know that she knows you are with her. I pray for good news.

  113. Oh, I can’t imagine what you are going through! (((HUGS))) and prayers for you both!

  114. We were driving back home through Willows on Sunday the 2nd and I thought of your family. I’m saddened to see this has happened but know that she is in good hands and has a very loving family nearby.
Sending well wishes your mother’s way. 🙂

  115. Corey, I am so sorry I wasn’t here sooner to add my voice to this chorus of well-wishing, but I am so glad to hear your mother is improving, and you will all be in my thoughts.
    Lots of love to you.
