The responses to the French Country Home Guessing Game were as usual brilliant. I wish I could send each of you a prize for your efforts and creativity. Here are a few of the creative responses that I enjoyed-
Genevieve's, "Petite Beau Peep's Bloomer Edgings."
Welltraveled10judi, "These are from very wealthy homes and the butler used them to shine boots and swat flies…"
"As the Frenchwoman embroidered her
household linens, she stitched her dreams and hopes and fantasies into
each piece. Then, on moonlit summer evenings, enchanted by the stars,
she would wrap her embroidered cloths around her waist and tiptoe out
of the house down to a quiet stream or forest clearing, and dance there
beneath the twinkling sky." Wrote Lorrie.
Certainly
linens similar were used for lining shelves, curtains, napkins, covers
for jam jars, lining bread baskets, and as edging for dish towels.
Though these in particular had a certain purpose and every French
country home had them on their chimney-mantle piece. Not only were
they used to decorate the mantle, but more importantly they were
essential for drafting the smoke from the fire to go upward and out. Patty Cole was the first to guess the scalloped edging as a Chimney runner.
…and the creative winner, so very Tongue in Cheek goes to: Nancy with her response, "Why, they are Chamber Pot skirts, of course! Who wants to look at an unsightly white and red enamel pee pot when
you can give one a sassy skirt instead? The red work accents the
typical red color trim of the potty and adds a touch of flair and
beauty to an ugly privy."
