When it Snows in the South of France…

Snow-in-provence

On the rare occasion when it snows in the south of France, roads close. Schools close. Shops close.

A winter wonder land appears and the day to day life stands still. Yesterday it snowed over 11 inches within a few hours.

More snow is predicted today. No school, roads blocked and skiing on the streets becomes the new way to travel.

I did not sleep with the window open last night.

Snow-blanket

Throughout the day we shook the snow off our plants, we nearly lost one tree.

Snowman painted

A painted snowman on the bakery's window. Certainly made Frosty jealous.

Snowballs

The kids took to the streets. Snowballs galore. I got nailed a few times. My camera was no protection even though I yelled, "Be Careful…My Camera!" Instead I was an easy target.

Snow covered provence

My camera and I were soaked. Taking photos in "the cold" is way to cool if you know what I mean. My hands were frozen as my gloves got in the way of taking photos. But more-so the snowflakes got in the way of my taking pictures. White blurry dots, snow balls and cold hands. Fun.

Snowboys

Sacha dressed as if it is early spring. His friend, is fashion conscious, had the right clothes, and chic ones I might add. Look he has the right gloves, boots, jacket…

Sacha was soaked in ten minutes and starving.

When it snows in the south of France it is lovely, enchanting, the stillness magical at least for a day or two.

Does it snow where you live?

  1. It has been snowing heavy for more than a week here. The conditions are extreme and it drains my energy to live my daily life. Terje is one of several in charge of the plowing of the whole city, and as soon as he is home from work he plows our driveway and our carport roof!!!!!
I have bought some very chic bright red Ilse Jacobsen wellington boots though and struggle my way through wet snow and icy water.
    Updates daily on my blog.

  2. Sadly, the south of England hardly gets any snow. But when it does, a wonderland emerges, I’m so envious Corey!

  3. Oh yes it snows here. We received 18 inches of snow during the first few days of winter….nonstop snow for 3 days. And we’ve received several inches at a time since then. I’m ready to move South!
WOW, I can’t believe you got 11 inches! That is a lot by anyone’s standards.

  4. Not enough! We may get snow every few years, but generally our biggest threat is ice. I am a northern girl who loves snow! ๐Ÿ™ I am also a teacher… I live for snow days!

  5. Somehow your snow looks so much more enchanting. Maybe I’ve just come to take ours for granted. There’s so much of it this year, courtesy of Lake Michigan. I’m not complaining though…I happen to love winter, especially when it snows. Enjoy!

  6. Rarely does it snow here, but oddly, the last couple of times there’s been a possibility, it’s missed us and gone south of us (South Alabama), which is totally weird.
Our last big snow was in 1993, when I got 21 inches. We still talk about that one!
Love your snow pictures, Corey, especially the trees and the ones through the window.

  7. Uh, no…no snow. But a cold front moved in last night with a low of 52 degrees… fahrenheit. People rush quickly to the grocery and purchase starter logs and little “Florida” bundles of firewood that are way too expensive, but we do have a fireplace which is rare here and sometimes we have to turn the a.c. down to use it. : )
Provence is so beautiful with its frosting!

  8. Ah, so you had a “snow day” too! Sacha and friend look like they’re poised to nail you again. At the rate our schools are closing for the white stuff (and the ice!) we will be going to school into the first week of July! There’s about six inches on the ground covered by a layer of ice. More snow will fall on Saturday. Provence is beautiful even in the snow.

  9. Yes it snows here and I am dreaming of Spring.
    I love your photographs.
Strange weather all over the world this winter.
    Love you
    Jeanne

  10. Snow, ice, sleet, more snow, ice, sleet and then the same. Ah! Life in Maine. Then summer appears for the month of July and it begins again.

  11. Lots of snow here for two days, now it’s raining and it’s so damm cold!

  12. Yes! It snows,….and sleets and ice storms and hails and rains on top of snow then freezes and snows more ….We live in Rochester, NY, which is on Lake Ontario which gives us ‘lake effect’ snow. This has been a wonderful year for snow…a new white covering almost everyday. My daughter is on the Nordic Ski Team at school. This week, the weatherman calls for snow, snow, snow!Beautiful! I love it! Cosy.

  13. Do you believe that it snowed once in our area of Florida? It was in the 1970s, and I still lived in the northern parts of the states…so I wasn’t here and I doubt that I would have been very impressed. I’ve been told that everything was closed for two days, for this light dusting of snow, and there were some major snow angels being made in the school yard!
    I miss snow!

  14. Well, here in Fort Worth, Texas, we rarely get snow, but it does happen. The last really pretty one was Valentine’s Day 2004. We’re more likely to get ice in a winter weather event. I hate ice! Nobody around here knows how to drive on any of it, anyway, so we all freak out.

  15. Adore your snow covered photos; in fact, only recently discovered your blog and am already addicted! Thanks for the inspiration.
    Best regards, brocobelle

  16. Oh how delightful – I can almost feel the joy and wonderment of this unusual occurance. To answer your question – no snow does not fall where I live (maybe very rarely – every 50 years or so here 50 miles south of San Francisco, but I have never seen it). However, where I grew up (London UK) it snowed maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I can still remember the absolute childlike joy of it – the hush of falling snow as it silenced and deadened everyday sounds – even in a city. The strange white bright light from inside of our house, the taking trays up to the park to slide down the hill … the cold, the wet .. as you can tell I loved it.
Enjoy … now if only it would snow here today too!! Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful day ….

  17. It snowed in mid-December here in South Louisiana! A once every 80 year event. There is something about seeing tropical plants covered in snow that is a treat for the eyes. Just beautiful! And so much fun.
    http://dlouisianat.blogspot.com/2008/12/oh-my-snow.html

  18. We get occasional snow here in West Texas. One year on Good Friday we got 8 inches. We loved it! Last year it snowed several inches on Thanksgiving which really excited our dinner guests from Trinidad, Jamaica and China. When it does snow here we are shut down too – no plows. I love the snow!! Your photos are beautiful, Corey.

  19. Snow and ICE in Boston. Dirty snow and icey ice. Cars slip everywhere! S.of.F looks like waaay more fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Unfortunately, yes.
    ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Some winters it snows and some it doesn’t. So far this winter has been all rain. I’d much rather have snow. There’s not much better than a snow day. Lovely pictures.

  22. on the way to work this morning…our first snow flurries of the season and some sticking on roof tops. just yesterday i was looking at coming through your part of the world in february on my way to italy but saw that there is snow and thinking to myself…wouldn’t make for a nice trip if i had snow to deal with…

  23. Sadly, no. I’m sure my teen boys would love to pelt me with snowballs.

  24. It snows all winter long here in Erie,PA. I am looking out my window now and everything is covered in white. It started just after Halloween and will last into April. Honestly, I love it. I love the change of seasons. White Christmas, Fall leaves, Spring flowers and glorious summers on the beach with perfect sunsets.
I am glad you get the chance to experience snow once in a while. I am sure it is magical for people who don’t normally see it.

  25. It snows in NE Ohio and I love it as long as I don’t have to drive!!! We live in the woods and when it snows it turns into a magical winterwonderland. I love the beauty of the seasons!!! It is snowing today
    and it is beautiful!!!

  26. It snows here in Missouri – some years more than others. But when it does, it quickly turns ugly because of the snow plows and people trying to get around – the white quickly turns brown/black. Only because we find it hard to just ‘BE’. Also, if they predict it is going to snow everyone heads to the grocery store (see my post on my blog – There was a run on bay leaves – Jan. 31, 2008). It is like people think they aren’t ever going to get out of their house again! Your photos are beautiful.

  27. Did you find food yesterday ? Could you eat ? At least some hot frech bread …

  28. Nope. I live in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area and grew up in Miami. Only once did we ever have snow…maybe like 1978, and even then you had to be in just the right area to see it. Your photos are AMAZING!

  29. I’m in Southern CA, and yes – we had snow a week before Christmas! Lots of it – nearly a foot! I was literally snowed in (unless I wanted to shovel my way out) but I didn’t care. I loved it. It was so beautiful!

  30. Diane Laurent

Your snow pictures are truly beautiful. I have lived in Atlanta for 25 years after moving here from western pa. I can honestly say I don’t miss the snow. It has snowed here and its lovely and thankfully goes away quickly.

  31. We (central Alabama) haven’t had a decent snow in 15 years – the kind you can sled on for days, closes down the city, knocks out the power…the Winter Wonderland snowfall! Now that the children are grown, I would settle for a beautiful, thick dusting that would turn our woods and lake into a postcard.

  32. Oh it’s perfect – and a plane tree allee snow covered and ethereal is hard to beat! Wish I was there.
The biggest, and unexpected, snow here in central North Carolina was just a few years back – 24″ in 24 hours! Stuck at the end of our cul-de-sac with a much needed hair appointment that morning, my stylist actually came in a 4-wheel drive and took me to the salon (she needed to pay her mortgage!), and took me the grocery store on the way back!!!!!
Enjoy while you can – so many photo ops and I know you’ll get them all to share with us.
Stay warm and dry – and tell Sacha to be prepared next time…….nothing more miserable than wet feet!

  33. It does not snow often in North Carolina, but when it does everything closes. I think this is the ideal balance. We get just enough snow to hope for one snow day a year, but not so much that it becomes a nuisance.

  34. It’s Beautiful!! I love the feeling of time standing still, and the hushthat falls over the landscape. Beautiful photos Corey!
It does snow a few times a season here, but we don’t have the equipment to be prepared.
The schools and business shut down, and everyone rushes to the store for supplies. What we do get is ice storms. They are not fun,
and usually it means some will lose electricity. Last year we had 3 weeks straight of ice. We had lots of Tree damage. Fortunately we did not lose our power at our house and we opened up our home and guest house to neighbors that were without electricity. So far this season has been fairly mild.
Seeing the photos of snow in Provence, makes me wish for a little snow to slow me down.. I have been wanting a pair of red wellington boots, and I need an excuse to buy them!! I’ll have to look up your Jacobsen wellingtons Britt-Arnhild!

  35. It is so beautiful. Were you able to get to the market and stock your pantry before it closed?
It rarely snows here. Once in a blue moon, as they say. We did get a little snow last year and it was wonderful. Just one day, but enough to spread its magic. I am still waiting this year.
    Stay warm. ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. Even the snow looks more beautiful in France. Yep…it snows here in Nebraska, but doesn’t look nearly as beautiful as what you have going on.

  37. Oh Corey! SO beautiful pictures! and I am so jealous!!! LOVE SNOW! but in La Rochelle didn’t snow….even if I was waiting and waiting for it….no snow…
    maybe sometime….I have still hope

  38. Can yo send some to Willows or Glenn to be exact. My girls keep asking when will it snow here…Daddy says we will have to go find it one of these weekends! Not sure when that will be his Mom is back in the hospital, well she was moved yesterday to a rehab center. Hopefull she will get her strength back soon and then home. The pictures are wonderfull and magical. Let it snow! Happy New Year Cory!
    Jeanette

  39. Oh yeah…tons of snow. And besides the initial snowfall there’s the problem of drifting. I love snow. But then, if you live in the north you must find creative ways to enjoy the outdoors in winter or you’ll succumb to cabin fever!
    – Suzanne, the Farmer’s Wife

  40. I am smitten, your picture paint images of almost unbearable beauty!
It does snow in Vienna, albeit rarely, twice a little bit so far this winter. There’s a dusting of snow on the roofs downtown and on the hills around the city right now. Pretty.
I keep loosing my gloves. Temperatures have been in the single digits (Fahrenheit), but I can work my camera only with bare fingers. Sometimes they get white from the cold and hurt even after I get into a warm room. Wrapping them around a hot cup of coffee helps getting them back to life faster.

  41. Your photos, as always, are amazing. What a beautiful winter wonderland — the kind I enjoiy…one I can look at and not BE in! hee!
I live in Sunny Southern California, at the beach, it doesn’t snow here, (except one crazy winter not too long ago, snow fell at the Santa Monica Pier!) so I get the best of both worlds – living in the warmth and experiencing the best and most beautiful of winter through gorgeous photographs such as yours.
    xo Isa

  42. It seems like snow in Tennessee is getting more and more rare. Instead, we are either in a drought or a down pour. We have had 15 inches of rain since Dec. 1st.
I may turn into a duck.

  43. It rarely snows in Portland, but before Christmas this year we had the same experience as you are having. We had about a foot of snow around our house. It was beautiful and peaceful. Schools were closed and snowmen appeared.

  44. Julie Ann

Thank you for beautiful Provence in the snow. It remains so. Wrought iron & snow in one post – must be my special day ! It is too cold for snow here in SE England now and what there was is frozen solid brrrrrrrrrrr.. Keep warm, Jx

  45. we got a huge dumping this winter. it normally does not snow that much in portland, but Mother Nature had different ideas this year. it had us house bound for about four days.
i have to admit though, it was rather nice. snow days as an adult can be much fun! ๐Ÿ™‚

  46. We had some heavy snow in December – a white Christmas for the first time in 12 years, according to the locals. I loved it! Snow is magical.
    Lorrie

  47. Here in Kentucky it doesn’t seem to snow a great deal.If it snows, by the next day every thing has melted. We’re originally from Chicago Illinois and are quite used to getting dumped on by the snowflakes. We lived in a large suburb and the white beauty of the snow was quickly turned to gray and black mush which I found so depressing.
We live in a more rural area now and when we first moved here I was amazed that if snow was in the forecast the schools usually closed and the bread and milk disappears from the grocery store.
    Carolyn

  48. Snow would be a freak occurrence. I’ve heard it happened years ago. I am hoping it does not happen again!

  49. Wonderful photos and a thoughtful reminder that I should enjoy snow instead of dreading it. In 2008 it snowed here in Bozeman, MT nine months out of the twelve! I’m not always lovin’ it, ‘ya know? But it is beautiful. Unfortunately, snow does not stop our day-to-day lives. The school buses run unless it’s -25 degrees F. or below… the kids play at outdoor recess unless the temperature goes below 10 degrees F. or below! No ‘snow days’ in this town! The sub-zero temps don’t keep anyone from doing their normal routines – kind of a shame. The funny thing is today we have temps over 50 degrees… most unusual! Enjoy the winter white! Jamie V.

  50. Does it snow where I live? You can bet your ass it does and I hate it. It’s much better to look at than to go out in.

  51. Our bits of snow each year delight us no end, but steady snow would never do for me. Yesterday I walked in the mild winter’s air, trimmed a plum tree damaged from the previous snowfall, tickled the daffodils, and watched the blue skies smile down on me. Snowfall delights for a time . . .

  52. Looking at these pictures makes me feel so happy. Here it is cold, dismal, and grey. Well, YOU know what I mean. Love, Annie

  53. I live in Seattle and YES it snowed here last month which is very unusual. Some areas had as much as two feet. I had about a foot at my house. Then it warmed up and RAINED like crazy and now many areas have severe flooding. We didn’t like the snow as schools were closed and it was rough getting around, but now this rain . . . some are wishing for snow again!
    Rosemary

  54. Oh yes – oh yes – oh yes!
Good thing I love it ๐Ÿ™‚
especially the stillness – it is full of wonder.

  55. In Atlantic Canada? You bet it does..way too much…Would you care for a few feet more? *G*

I had to wait until I was in my 30’s before I saw my first snow. Back home in Australia it snows in only a very few areas (and even then its mostly man-made) but here in Ottawa, Canada…. yes… it snowSnowSNOWS!
And for years I have hated it… “horrid white stuff” I called it. Until a few weeks ago when I got ahold of my husbands jewellry loupe and started really looking at the snow flakes…. the incredible works of art from God. Now Im sitting here wondering when the next day of snow is going to come…. and its not soon enough!

  58. What glorious pictures! I love snow, but alas, living in TX, we don’t often get much. It is wild when we do!
I thought about you last night when the news was talking about all the snow your area is receiving. Told my husband I “knew” someone there!!

  59. There is no snow in south Texas and I am jealous.
We went to an amusement park last weekend, and that was the first time my 9 yr old had ever seen snow. They had a ‘snow slide’ ride. Isn’t that sad? (I was raised in the Midwest….I love the snow!)

  60. Elaine L.

It seems like it’s snowing everywhere this year. I live in the high desert of southern CA and we got about a foot of snow in one day.
The freeway was closed for two days. I was snowed in on my hill. Thank God, for my husband’s jeep, which kept us in contact with the outside world. LOL
It is hard for me to imagine snow in Provence with it’s mild climate.
    ~elaine~

  61. Clichy Rose

We get lots of snow in the winter and are wishing for some more right now because it will warm up if it clouds over. (It is Alaska, but Yikes! It’s not fit for man nor beast!) It is 32 below zero F, no wind, right now…seems to be warming up, it was 40 below last night. LOL. Ah! Thanks for the beautiful images to brighten my day! I Love, love, LOVE your photos of the heart-shaped ironwork in the snow!!!!!!!!!!

  62. No, there is no snow where I live now.
Thank you for braving the cold to take these beautiful pictures, Corey. Your window hardware is so lovely!
Sacha and his friend look like they are having such jolly good fun ๐Ÿ™‚

  63. Yes, lot’s of snow in Colorado. A couple of years ago it snowed every single week for eight weeks straight right around Christmas. Makes for treacherous driving sometimes!

  64. Sure wish I was there! I’m in the Nice area and there’s no snow here, sadly. But there is snow in the hills, so at least it’s within view! Enjoy it Corey! from Cy in Cagnes-sur-mer

  65. Hi Corey,
    So pretty!! How exciting!
It never snows in Southern CA. A rare snow happens about once in 20 years.
    Enjoy!
    Rosemary
    PS, Happy New Year!

  66. Yes Nebraska gets lots of snow. It can be beautiful and of course it is the type of the day where you want to stay curled up with your tea and a good book.
    hope you enjoy the snow.
    love and blessings

  67. Corey, loved the photo of the heart-shaped iron gate(?). I felt cold just to look at Sacha’s outfit! In the midle of that snow! He’s a brave!
It doesn’t snow in the Algarve! ๐Ÿ™‚
    Big hug*

  68. A year ago I would have said it never snows in Walla Walla – but that was last year. We had almost 10 days of snow right before and right after Christmas. Our town does not have a huge”waiting in the wings” magic snowplow fleet so we were pretty locked in……but, I have to say it was beautiful! White, frosty icing just makes cupcakes and the landscape look delicious. Your photos make one yearn for snow – and I don’t really think we need any more:)

  69. l’sigh! That espresso got to me… plus— Sasha and his friend are hawt! l’sigh, young handsome men. I don’t want to do anything with or to them, it’s just happy sigh making and mozel tov to you!

  70. Hi Corey!
In Lisbon, Portugal it’s still not snowing, but it might soon. It’s getting colder and colder. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  71. We have had snow here in Oxfordshire, Uk but it soon disappeared, and we have had nothing like you have had there…!!

  72. Tons of snow. We get mountains. In fact we have a running contest with Syracuse NY for the most snow in a season. My city averages 84.2 inches per year. We were rated 15th in the list of top snowiest US cities by the listmakers.
I can honestly say that by April I am tired of it all and wish it to go away.

  73. Every season is a celebration bringing with it a new emotion and understanding.

  74. Wow! It may be cold, but it looks so beautiful. Wish I could see that because it doesn’t snow in Florida. The last time was 1989 and only a little. Thanks for the photos and keep warm ๐Ÿ™‚

  75. Ms Danielle Maree

Ah, sadly we never have snow in Darwin, N.T. Australia.
I don’t think the frangipanni’s and bougainvillia’s could take it somehow. Not to mention the crocodiles and cane toads.
I love seeing your photo’s, keep snapping interesting shots.
    Happy 2009.
    ๐Ÿ™‚

  76. I read in one of the comments about their city being in competition with Syracuse, NY. Well, I live in Syracuse, NY. Need I say more? As I look out of my window, I see two feet of snow on top of the garage. Will not see grass until the end of April ๐Ÿ™

  77. SweetPeaSurry

It very much does snow where I live, in the lovely middle-america-snow-and-ice-covered-tundra.
I used to be a fan of the first snow, now that has even lost it’s luster as I have to scrape windows, warm up engines, and plow through it in 4-wheel drive to get to my job.
    Sigh

  78. Wonderful snowy photos, Corey!
Nope, my current island residence doesn’t cater to snow, but the neighboring island of Hawai’i (the big island) does cater to snow; on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano.

  79. North Idaho has lots of snow! It reminds me of the movie “Narnia” when the first snow blankets the ground. It is quite beautiful and serene. Although I could do without the shoveling. ๐Ÿ™ Blessings, Kimberly

  80. It snowed here in Paris. The streets were treacherous and it was only pretty for a few hours.

  81. Hi Corey,
Happy New Year! We must be about 30 minutes away from one another but we didn’t get any snow here in Sanary, my children were very frustrated apart from Charlotte managed to get over to Cassis to go sledging.
    Take Care,
    Maria

  82. All the photos are beautiful (as usual) and your words so evocative. I looooove the photo of the porcelain cup with its warm soothing beverage.
Hope your camera isn’t worse for the wear after the snowballs!
    Thanks for sharing, as always.

  83. What a Magical Winter Wonderland!! I Love the relaxed and charming feeling of your pictures.
Yes it snows where I live. If I take a look outside you see white charming houses from the 1920`s, the roofs are covered with white cotton like snow and a few birds are resting their legs at the top of the chimneys. For a few days ago it was more likely that I stayed inside under my lovely quilt, instead of scraping ice from my car windows with 15 degrees below zero. This summer we moved back from The Netherlands to Norway and what a huge climate change!
However, cold and dark, it is cosy with charming houses, luminous windows at nights, woodburning stoves and hot chocolate :)) Every country has it`s own special fascination!
I wish you a wonderful new year. May it be filled with only Positive Surprises!!
    Friendly greeting,
    Aina

  84. Massilianana

Hรฉ ! Hรฉ ! Yes , it snows in Marseille !!! My kids had been waiting impatiently for this snow and it was … lovely ! We woke up and it was still dark but the snow was quietly falling , getting thicker every minute . Of course we went out for a walk and for fun , they were so excited ! Later in a little park where they use to play , we had snow ball fights with total strangers ( youngs guys in their twenties) who played like 5 year old kids . And we stayed until it got very dark , everybody had a good laugh and we were frozen !
Your pictures once again are absolutely gorgeous !

  85. Pretty, very pretty. It snows so much here that I am starting to wonder when DOESN’T it snow here?

  86. gosh–what a beautiful picture you have painted and you have the photos to prove it! So very wonderful and I love the gleam of the snow and ice you captured!
I’ve lived in HB for 5 years and never seen it snow, LOL! It snowed here once about 1/4 inch when I was in college and it was on the news! I lived inland at the time and we got maybe 1/2 inch! I was so thrilled I ran outside to my car and fell right on my behind–snow’s slippery, LOL!
Nope, I’ll take the warmer weather, thank you!

  87. In Montreal we always have loads of snow (and next week bitter cold -22C).
    Suzanne

  88. Ariane Cagle

What beautiful photos of the snow! I always wish for a white Christmas every year but that didn’t happen this year. Seems like the snow keeps going north of us (mid-state Indiana). But we’re supposed to get a couple inches tomorrow.
When I lived in Arizona it was a big deal when it got cold and snowed any where in the Phoenix area. People would drive their kids to wherever the snow was so they could see it. Winters were pleasant there but it was really hard to get in the Christmas spirit when it was so warm. LOL

  89. rare and magical!
    those shots capture it!

  90. Pretty pictures. I do live in the South of France but we almost had no snow. Just half a centimetre. But all the kids sure wished for more and a day without school.

  91. Riley Gerbrandt

No, I live in San Luis Obispo, California. It does not snow here. But I was in Yosemite two weeks ago, and there was lots of snow. I went with my wife, Serena, who is Gail Sullivan’s daughter.
