What color should I paint our bathroom? A hint of grey?

What color should I paint our bathroom? Hints of grey: A certain shade of grey, greyish in tone, taupe, the color of a dove's wing. Ash, the sky on a drizzly morning, the wet sidewalk, a tone setter, calm, the stage before the waking of imagination.

"What color should I paint the bathroom walls?" I asked my friend who has a brilliant sense of color.

She looked around put her hands on her hips and declared, "Certainly not grey or anything remotely related to it. Your bathroom needs to be fresh."

"Oh no… I like grey." I meekly replied and she quickly added, "It might be a good time to change."

Oh no. Goodbye hints of grey in unpolished silver, goodbye the bark of a Plantain tree, goodbye the color of a bed of sand after the wave has smoothed its surface, goodbye tempting clouds of rain and business suits, and long highways at twilight.

"You know," I challenged my friend, "If I paint the bathroom a color other than grey it has to match the rest of the interior of our home."

She laughed, opened her arms wide and teased, "Your home is a canvas of grey waiting for color to splash upon it."

"I'll splash water, the color of water." I thought I had her with that one.

"Yes, yes, yes! Green or blue water will do."

Dictionary definition of grey:

morality.

n.

white.

What color should I paint our bathroom?

"Maybe I'll paint the bathroom the color like the sheet rock walls."

French Husband and Chelsea looked at me and nearly trampled me with their words,

"The tiles use to be that color! You hated them. AND NOW YOU WANT TO PAINT THE BATHROOM LIKE THE SHEET-ROCK?!?"

"It isn't exactly the same color as the tiles… is it?"

Help.

Note: If you click on any of the photos they will enlarge. I am thinking about that mirror by the sink on the floor. Yeah or Nay?

I’m of no help, I just ordered new towels for my bathroom and they are anthracite and taupe colored.

  2. Hasmin Cannon

Love how the bathroom is looking Corey. (the round mirror is awesome, btw) Maybe you could get a bit of inspiration from your floors and that cute little table in the corner…do I see a bit of blue or bluish-grey tinge on them? I know that whatever color you decide upon, it’s going to look great!

  3. How about turquoise?

    Hi Merisi
Now that is the color of the tiles. Yann would kill me for sure if I paint the walls turquoise.

  4. herhimnbryn

If it must be grey, what about the silver grey of silver birch trees? With touches of the palest, palest green?
Aw, come on C. You KNOW what you want:)

    Hi Duchess
    I thought I did.
I become wishy-washy when others give me their opinions. I start to see things through their eyes, and the world opens up, look differents and inviting. That is my problem; I am not black or white when it comes to most things… I am grey. Especially when I listen to others I tend to lean whatever way the wind blows.

  5. I would go with a light sage green. It would work wonderfully with the floor and then you can have grey/white accessories!! 😉 but i have to say i also like the colour of the walls as they are… but hey i understand the look those men give you, like you have gone mad…. but it wouldnt stop me!
    Ems x

  6. Pale icy blue

  7. jade green 🙂

  8. danaspakle

on my computer the colour of the sheet rock is a grey-ish green, like the ocean in autumn. not too bad at all. u just need to find the name of it on one of those swatches like “morning mist” or “spring forest”. (hee hee hee, the names always make me laugh -i would love the job thinking of the names of paint)
it looks so gorgeous, all of it
dream about the colour and in the morning you will know

    Hi Dana
Funny you should say you would like to have the job of thinking up the names for the paint colors.
A few years ago while on a plane flying home from France to California I sat by a couple who were naming palettes of chip colors for LIPSTICKS. It WAS THEIR JOB. I enjoyed listening to them for 11 hours thinking up names. Often I wanted to jump and play along.
Ruby Red, Kiss me Pink, Lollipop Red, so on and so forth.

  9. How about going with the whiter side of gray? That way you can splash the bathroom with colored towels and accents and have the best of both worlds…

  10. One time my dad painted their bathroom orange because the paint was on sale. My mom didn’t know until two walls were done.
    Don’t paint your bathroom orange!
    (I vote for a soft sea-green.)

  11. Corey, I have to say I am really drawn to grey right now….something soothing yet sophisticated about it….
    Have fun chossing…:)

    Hi dearest C,
I love that you are leaving return comments now. You’ll listen and look through others eyes, but I reckon deep down you still KNOW. You have an innate sense of style. But whatever you decide, those gorgeous nude dawings must be on the walls!

  13. yes it would be lovely…the grey BUT you could also paint it a dark blue…(oh i do suggest perusing marie-claire maison….) bonne chance!
    nancyxx

  14. I like the color of the sheet rock. I think it is soothing. The mirror – don’t care for the style too much related to your sink and tub. Seems a bit modern. Good luck with your choices. Husband and I are in process of putting on an addition to our house, so we are in the discussion phase of colors.

  15. Julie Ann

Gray of course ! It works brilliantly with the Provencal light. Think of appartment Chanvre at La Madone – your favourite place ! Why on earth be disuaded when gray will look perfect – chic, timeless, elegant ?! Jx

  16. Julie Ann

    I mean grEy !

  17. My Melange

I think you should *ditress* the walls. You know several colors and a wash to make them look old and worn. But hey- that’s me 🙂 It looks beautiful so far Corey- wish it were mine!

  18. misschris

Why not just go through your personal photos for color inspiration? I bet you’re already doing that 😉 As you probably know you can get the paint store ( Leroy Merlin or Casto) to color code it and mix to for you. I think you should trust yourself. From what I’ve seen you have great taste.

  19. I agree with your friend…no gray! You need a color to sooth and envelope you in a relaxing and peaceful mood. Soft blues and sea greens are exactly what I was thinking!
As for the mirror… not round, something linear above the sink to “mirror” the lines of the room and draw your eye around the room and not just into the “porthole”! I envy that your project is making such headway but rejoice with you at the fun and discovery of creating it. (Our bathroom is SO ready to be gutted and completely redone, it is vintage 1947 and ugly!!!)
    Happy decorating!

  20. I love the angle of the tub with a peek into the sky. Maybe use a silvery blue paint, like a reflection of a grey blue day. Or a hint of the color in the photo collage at the top of your post. I painted blue with a hint of green in Morganne’s bath, and we grew tired of it quickly. She dosn’t have any natural light where your does. I saw a silvery blue bath in a magazine with venetian mirrors, with a crystal chandelier with candles. They showed it by candlelight and it was gorgeous, made for romantic long soaks in the tub. I do love silver and tend to go back to the grey tones. I do think cool tone an any color will be a change from the warm turquoise blue. Have fun with it . Paint a wall and live with it a few days, and watch the light change the color. Good luck, I know it will be beautiful.

  21. If not grey, is silver a colour?
I was once convinced that I should paint our ensuite a colour. A professional designer helped me choose a buttercream..and I tried to like being inside that colour. After a few days my husband came home to find me in our bathroom with a paint brush. Our bathroom is antique white now and I still love it after 7 years.

  22. Corey ~ Whatever you choose will be amazing! I love the mirror, that seems to be a must. I’ve always liked colors of the sea for a bathroom. But YOU are the one living in it. What do you want in your heart of hearts?

  23. Listen to your friend. Thats why we have them silly. Hugs from Maine http://sophie4me.blogspot.com/

  24. Christine

Hi Corey – such a lovely dilema to have. How about a delicate lavender that has grey undertones. Nothing that shouts purple but has the feel of it…….i’m sure which ever direction you go in it will be fabulous because you have wonderful taste.
    Cheers
    Christine

  25. Hi Corey. It’s been months since I have last commented…..it’s a long story. Anyway I see that you and I are both redoing our bathrooms. We are using the same style claw foot bath tub so I am very interested in what you are doing with yours. We found our tub at a junk yard and when I saw it I felt like I discovered a beautiful treasure and I couldn’t get it home fast enough. What size is your bathroom? Now that I see yours I wonder if my tub will fit on a angle? I have been considering a silver blue for our bath or a taupe…. still not a 100% sure hmmm maybe even robin egg blue. In our front room and dining room we uses B.M. ranchwood and I love it because the walls go from shades of taupe to shades of gray depending on the time of day and the light. Our bathroom door will have a frosted glass panel at the top with the word SPA or Bath etched into the glass. Who would think that getting a new bathroom could be so exciting.

  26. I zoned in on the bottom right picture in the montage of gray you’ve got at the top…the bluest one.
I’m always attracted to blue. So how about a compromise….pick a blue-gray color…but more on the blue side so it’s not so dull.
I like anything you like, so if you favor the mirror, then I say go for it. I like your sense of style. It’s funky to mix modern/art deco with antiques.

  27. Perhaps a compromise to keep with your desire for grey for all walls except an accent wall of a subtle warm color. I adore grey as well-cool, relaxing but for those chilly winter mornings, something a little “tonic” such as golden brownish hue.

  28. Corey,
The fabric behind the pearl… very nice,
is it an iridescent grey green?
I love colors that appear dusty and don’t scream out “I Am Grey”! Colors that keep you guessing what they are. Enjoy!

  29. A warm grey with a hint of green, I think. Not a literal grey.
Corey, your first instincts are right! The neutral colors will let the classy featues of the bathroom (the way you’ve handled the sink, tub, etc.) stand out. A bright color will overwhelm them and the focus will be only the color.

  30. Almost forgot.
I think that mirror should be on the wall. My gut tells me it is too small to do the look of it sitting on the floor. For a mirror on the floor, I would use a tall (5 ft or more) rectangular mirror, so you can see yourself from the tub.
    Just my opinion.

  31. First let me say I love color. I lived in an achromatic world for a long time – not because I loved it or chose it but because I think it chose me if that makes any sense. Then a new friend introduced me to color and now I may be over killing it. But I love my home in full color. As for your new bathroom, I would go with a very pale blue. I’m not wild about the mirror but it might be fun to take pictures in it. Imagine all the images. You’re doing a great job. I say trust yourself. You have great taste and you have to live in it.

  32. Ed in Willows

What’s wrong with grey ?? I like a 2 or 3 tone combination of greys. Go for it Corey !! Things always seem to look good in the end when you finish.

  33. hermes orange! if you get the orange RIGHT (needless to add) you will feel that you are in a womb–also your skin will postively GLOW…..bathroom is good room to womb in…..first time commenter….LOVE your memoirs!!!

  34. Billie Haffey

Dear Corey, I have a friend who is an interior designer and she has created her own line of paint. This is right down your alley!!! Her name is Ellen Kennon and the paint is called Full Spectrum Paints. Each color, including white, has every color of the rainbow added to the mix. Her paint colors are glorious and once they are on the walls, they change colors every hour of the day. She has the most incredible array of grays and they go from green to lavender to blue to dove throughout the day!! Check her out on line and please accept my apologies if I shouldn’t add this info to your blog!! But you will love Ellen!!!
    Big hugs,
    Billie

  35. I LOVE the color painted on the sheetrock. I find it happy and restful at the same time.
I like each room in my house to be a different color…They are not bold colors but we have ‘linguini’ in the dining room and a soft blue in my son’s room and a light green that my husband picked in the bathroom.
But you have to choose what you like. I have a friend who has a mostly white house. She even replaced the pink oleander bushes outside with ones that will have white flowers. To me her house is a blank canvas waiting for color, but she likes it the way it is.

  36. No, no, no, not gray. I can tell you from experience…our master bathroom is gray.
    It is not a flattering color for me a very pale Scandinavian blond. It makes me look old and lined ;}
Now that you are a blond and being mistaken for a Scandinavian, I feel you should consider another color for your bathroom. We are in the process of choosing a new color for our bathroom…the other day I saw a bird at our feeder that had a peachy beige chest…I called to my Husband and said…”See that bird at the feeder? I want the color of his chest for our bathroom” my Husband smiled and said “OK I will go and get some color chips”
I love your mirror…it needs to live in your bathroom…is it large enough to go over the sink?
I also love seeing large and long mirrors on the floor leaning against the wall.
Good luck, I know that whatever you do it will be perfect…it is perfect already. Love the angle of the tub…the tub is to die for.

  37. Jeanette M.

You were right. Grey. Just go with one that has an influence of another color in it. Bring in color some other way. If you paint it a bright color it won’t feel like “you”. It will be perfect whatever you do if you stay with your gut.

  38. If your heart is set on grey, then go with it! Your interior decor is absolutely stunning from what I can see in your blog photos. If you need that splash of color in your bathroom, use colored linens or accessories — then the color can be changed at a moment’s notice and without a paintbrush! =)

  39. Grey only if there is tons of natural light in the room or bright accent colors. I likw the suggestion of silver birch color. My bathroom is taupe with white trim (just one teeny window) and is cheery even on overcast bluish grey days. Of course in Seattle most days this time of year are overcast.

  40. Sunrise Sister

8 years ago I had a decorator in my home and was discussing some of my thoughts about color and design….everything I suggested was a no, no, no! Too strong, not easy to live with, you’ll hate it, etc. I decided I needed some aid from a different mindset decorator – I made the change and “we” were able to bring into focus my love of color in decor. I even had to argue a bit with the painter – we LOVE our interior decor. I wouldn’t have chosen grey for me but your home is so beautifully appointed now, it’s pretty obvious that your sense of color is not awry – go for it:)

  41. Do what you want….you have fabulous taste and it should reflect you and your family, not anyone else. The mirror is beautiful and would look lovely…is it vintage, or are you mixing it up a little? …like I said, this is Your Style….and that’s one of the things we love about your blog.

  42. Marci Larsen

I would go with your first impulse of color.
Don’t listen to others. Saying that, I think gray or turquoise.

  43. naw…forget the mirror…it needs to come to my house! 🙂 I love it!!

  44. I like the color in the second panel from the left, first row on the left, fifth color chip down. Sort of a greyish-green, I think.(I had to enlarge the photo about 600% to see the colors!) And Yes! on the mirror. Absolutely!

  45. A very pale, warm, peach. Think of the inside of a shell. It flatters the skin. You’ll look so beautiful in that light.
    Darla

  46. That is a lovely shade of blue with a hint of gray in the little table by the window….I’d pick up on that ….it would tie the room together and wouldn’t be overpowering 🙂

  47. shannon in oregon

a steel/blue grey would be lovely. staying true to your love of grey, but offering a bit of color…

  48. Because I’m still dreaming of La Madone’s colors AND getting ready to use three shades of grey in my dining room makeover – I have to say stay with a beautiful soft, silvery grey. However, if you really want to add some color, make it really dark walls in AUBERGINE! With the flooring and your furniture it would be stunning……and think how wonderful the nudes would ‘pop’ on that deep background, wow!
Corey, you’re a decorating pro – whatever you decide will be fabulous I know.
BTW – I’m using a paint color named “In the Midnight Hour” for my entryway and small hallway next to the soon to be French grey dining room. It’s the deepest, darkest blue before black and, as there are only small chunks of wall between lots of doorways, I think will pack a punch. Bob thinks people will trip or lose their way in a ‘black hole’. What do non-visual men know about such things!!!! That little hallway in La Madone before entering their private home, has the black wall with the gold framed mirror and table, low chandelier and bust of the lady – is in my dreams constantly and inspired this idea!
Happy painting Corey – it’s looking really lovely in your bathroom.

  49. Color – grey … or the palest blue/turquoise shade from that photo of the perfume bottle (?) in the montage at top. Your house is amazing, go with your heart!
Mirror – what’s your plan? Hanging it over the tub? sink? It’s not my favorite – seeing it alone, but you seem to be a “fairy decorator” and make everything look stunning.
This is fun! Even your work in progress makes for a great photo, how do you do that?

  50. You must go with your gut feeling as you are the one who has to live with your choice. It is your home and therefore should reflect you and your style.

  51. Melinda J. Alexander

If you have a chance, look at the website www.frenchcountry.com. There is a wall that is perfect; plaster, rough of course, painted a soft creamy white with just a hint of a few gray fleur de lis almost as if someone has painted over the fleur de lis and the years have faded the plaster so that they peek from behind the years of paint. The mirror is far too modern, I would love to see a flea market wood chippy mirror on the wall. Melinda, The House of Tuscany – www.houseoftuscany.com

  52. Erin Perry

I had to laugh when I read this post. My bathroom, here in my Mexicolor house on the Central Coast of California, is lime green and fuschia – about as far away from grey as one can get! It’s decorated with Frida prints, Day of the Dead skulls and calaveras, photos of fountains and doorways from San Miguel Allende and nichos and milagros. Probably not quite the thing for Provence – but go for a bit of color – you’ll love it. How ’bout that wonderful Provencal green we see so often on shutters and old doors?
    Erin in Morro Bay

  53. Melinda J. Alexander

    Corey:
Sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking, the website is: euroantiquemarket.blogspot.com
scroll down until you see the wall under “I only thought I had been to Brussels” Melinda, The House of Tuscany

  54. Elaine L.

I love your bathroom and it’s going to be so beautiful! My only suggestion is to keep the color peaceful and looks good in candlelight.
    ~elaine~

  55. I say yay to the mirror and yay to gray -if that’s what you like!
I love the sheetrock color too.I think it’s a touch more green than the tiles. How about ‘verdigris’?
    Good luck with your choices
    Andrea

  56. Ellen Cassilly

Not grey. I was thinking of a coral, or salmon color. It could be on the palish side but not all the way down at the end of the scale. I read one comment suggesting Hermes orange. It made me think that some lace curtains could have an Hermes orange ribbon holding them back and the walls could be a soft butternut color. Something warm! Color always brings out the strong opinions. Have fun. Ellen

  57. Di Overton

NO NO NO You do it in the colour that you love, you have to live with it. You are one of the best stylists I know – do your own thing PLEASE
I have at last started to post pics of our cottage renovation if you want to take a look.

  58. You’re asking us our opinion? You have exquisite taste. I love your whole home. I vote that you go with your instincts. They haven’t gone wrong yet.

  59. Corey, why not use the mirror? I admit the bathroom is going to look much, much larger and open than it was before.
Color,…..mmmmm…Well, as I told you, I’ve painted everything that stands still lately. I’m in my “color” stage I guess. Most of my walls upstairs were white but now, heavens.
Suggestion. Hang some sheets or large, very large sheets of paper in other colors on the sheetrock walls before they texture them and see how you feel about lots of any color. Also, will the walls be a smooth texture, rough, etc.? That affects the color greatly in my humble opinion.

  60. Brother Mathew

Cool grey or warm grey? Decide and go with it. It’s what you want. Its only paint. It’s not like your painting the Golden Gate. I like very pale aqua with tan though. Live with the color and in 6 mo. you just can’t stand it go with something else. You only have to please yourself and Yann. Sacha should care less and Chelsea will only use it when she is home. Make sure you seal the raw gyp. board (sheet rock) with a primer and then two color coats. Play with it. Is the wall pre textured or smooth? Have fun.

  61. How about the color of the bathtub feet? Love the mirror and what you are doing with the bathroom. You are the best at knowing.
My bathroom has a pink tub, white sink, soft green tile, lavender walls, white tile around the tub. It was the way we bought it, I must think about changing it sometime too. Not sure how to get rid of the pink tub though.

  62. Your bathroom is coming along beautifully! I love the furniture choices – it’s all so romantic and lovely! That tub worked out so well – as you knew it would! A pale, warm, grey would be heaven on the walls. The mirror you asked opinions about would be a nice little surprise, but a chippy substantial floor mirror would be pretty dreamy…
    xo Isa

  63. I just painted my bathroom a kind of greyish green….I like it. Subtle color.

  64. oh, yes Corey, lavender with a hint of grey would be sublime.

  65. GREY! It is like a picture frame for splashes of color. Imagine Red tulips in the spring, blue hyacinths in the fall, orange whatever the winter. Your scene could change on a whim! You could get towels in colors you love and change the whole look or just use a dark warm grey. So peaceful. So relaxing! And a perfect frame for the nudes! Had a purple bathroom once and though I loved it at the time, it was quite refreshing to change it to warm shades of brown and tan accented with dark grey. The purple was tense, the tan (NOT BEIGE!) was gentle to the spirit. And shouldn’t a bathroom be a island of peace, a scantuary away from the world? Whatever you chose, it will be wonderful from what we have seen so far!

  66. The greys you show look so calming & restful. I say if you want to paint it grey, then paint it grey! (If it was my decision, I’d go with grey.)
    xo,
    Lynda

  67. you know what…you livened yourself up with a new color hair ….
    so…

  68. Grey is not a color. I have been following your blog for some time now and finaly have to put my 2 cents in. Blue, now that is a color.
    cindy

  69. Corey,
I think whatever color you ultimately pick, be it grey or blue…or fushia(just kidding) it will be perfect. As for the mirror, it is beautiful!!!
I am still in awe that your husband allowed you a ‘crooked’ bathtub. Mine would just faint, okay, pass out, faint might not be manly enough. Anyway…you get the picture. Stay true to yourself, it hasn’t failed you yet.

  70. I’m kind of leaning toward ice green, ice blue or ice lavendar. Maybe only one wall. You don’t want to make your bathroom totally different from the rest of your house.
    Or make it gray silverish.
    I would ignore the critics.

  71. Hi Corey, I think you will have a better feel for the color you want once you put on your primer coat of paint. How about wall paper on one wall or on part of a wall and then select your color around that. I bet you have beautiful light and with that window you can really consider a whole array of different colors. Grey is The color at the moment… It looks lovely with your antiuqes but maybe you should get risky after all it’s just paint, you can always paint over it.

  72. Alison Gibbs

How about a beautiful soft, blue/grey.
    Mmmm definitely the mirror
    Alison

  73. Tamara Giselle

I don’t think that color is close to what was in there before. I too like the color of that sheetrock. It may be the chalkiness of the sheetrock that you like as much as the color.
I like bathrooms to be very neutral as well. I don’t like a color to be imposed upon me when I am readying myself for the day.
The color of a dove is a delightful color isn’t it?

  74. Christine

Instead of matching the paint chips against the wall match it to your skin!(I know, interior designers are rolling their eyes at this).I once bought a light curry green color (think Michelle Obama’s inauguration day attire) and thought it looked great until I saw my reflection in the mirror..so just keep that in mind no matter how narcissistic it sounds 🙂

  75. I have to agree that you have impeccable taste. I’ve only been to France once a few years ago. Yet I still remember the lovely shades of green water that filled the small streams, colors like jade. I can’t remember such vibrancy. The sky, lavender, sunflowers, or any of the numerous things in nature provide great inspiration. The colors are so wonderful there. Pick something that makes you happy, that makes you smile. Besides, you could try it out on just one wall first, and if you don’t like it just paint over it. That’s why I love paint! 🙂

  76. Cousin Chris

I think you need to Chrome your bathroom walls. Think about it, you wouldnt need any mirrors!
Better yet, Cover the walls with polished diamond-plate aluminium for that industrial look. Listen to your cousin,do as I say.
    Cousin Chris

  77. Massilianana

I have a book by an English decorator called Caroline Quatermaine , maybe you can have a look at her site . She uses color beautifully in surroundings similar in style as your home . i am sure you will find it inspiring . Good luck !!!

  78. My favorite shades of grey are mushroom (which is a browish grey) and a light silvery one. I don’t like the mirror, unless you keep the area sleek and manly wih some touh of glitter in the shower curtain.
Thanks for inviting us in your house.

  79. I would paint it blue the blue of the caribbean.

  80. Asif Rashid

I would suggest a metallic silver colour which would reflect light in the bathroom or bathroom tiles. I purchased my silver bathroom tiles from http://www.onlinebathrooms.com and the service was fantastic

  81. Hi Corey,
Would White be an alternative …
(with or without small details of silver or chrom) ?
You could change “the atmosphere ” by changing colors of towels, flowers, candles etc.
And about the mirror (it´s fine) , but wouldn´t it be more your style with a more “old-fashioned ” mirror ?

  82. Isabel ~ Maison Douce

Corey, if you are going to paint it grey, I would suggest a grey that has a hint of blue, it makes such a difference!!! Can’t wait to see it!
    Isabel

  83. Trisha Johnson

    why not a lovely toile?
