Daisy Stops Breathing:
Sara and I had stopped worrying so much about Daisy. It had been two
months since she had been discharged from Stanford Hospital. She had
gained several pounds and was much stronger. Her motor skills were
improving and she was smiling and interacting with people.
Yesterday morning I was getting ready to take Zoe and Teddy to swim
lessons and Sara was about to leave for work. Daisy had just been fed
through her tube, and I was upstairs folding clothes. Sara called up to
me, "Tom, could you come down here?"
I stepped down, a little bit annoyed at the interruption, thinking
she was going to show me something the kids had destroyed. I came into
the kitchen. Sara was bent over Daisy. She didn't want to alert Zoe and
Teddy, watching TV in the other room. She looked up at me, "Daisy is
turning blue!"
I bent down at the child, her eyes half closed and rolled back. Her
skin was bluish. My eyes went to her lips, which I had learned are a
good indicator of oxygen saturation. They were dark blue…purple. In a
state of shock, I reached down and took her into my arms. She was limp
as a rag doll. I Put my ear to her mouth and nose. She was not
breathing, at all.
For a moment, I was just frozen, looking at our baby. I said, "My God, Sara! She's not breathing at all!"
Sara was calmer than I was, laying out a blanket on the floor,
grabbing a bulb syringe. She told me, "Set her down and start mouth to
mouth, now!" I dropped to my knees and put my mouth over Daisy's, which
was gaping open. I breathed hard into her lungs, harder than I probably
should have. I felt her chest raise up, and then I felt warm liquid
spray onto my cheek. Formula had sprayed out of her nose. Her lungs and
airway were full of formula that she had somehow burped up and was
choking on.
We turned her over and she gasped and coughed and most of the liquid
ran out. I breathed a sigh of relief as she began to take shallow
breaths. Handing me a phone, Sara said, "Call 9-1-1." I dialed, it rang
once, and then stupidly I hung up, convinced the problem was solved. I
guess I had watched too many movies, you know, where the drowning
victim coughs a couple times and is fine? It was true she was now
breathing, but not well and she was still blue. As Sara suctioned her,
the telephone rang. It was 911 calling me back! I picked up and told
them we needed paramedics, that we had gotten her breathing again, but
she still needed help.
The paramedics arrived in about two minutes from our local fire
department. The big fire truck pulled up to the house, but luckily Zoe
and Teddy were engrossed in their TV show and didn't notice. They put
her on oxygen and "bagged" her. She was breathing, but with great
difficulty. They called in the ambulance, which arrived in about 10
minutes. This finally got Zoe's attention. She looked out the window.
"Daddy! Why is there an ambulance here?"

Sara is one courageous Mommy.
I’m sorry. I will be thinking of Daisy and family. The little ones are so innocent.
Would you please post Tom’s blog site again? I lost it. Hugs and prayers going to Daisy and her family. What a struggle they are having.
Oh my, to stay so calm and yet freak out at the same time. My prayers are with all.
