Things You Like

Cafe Au Puces

A few days ago I asked you, "What you would love to find at the Brocante (Antique flea- market, in France.)," and to leave me a comment (here) and that I would try to find the object of your desire (or something close to it) and add a photo of it to my sidebar.

Things you Like, is starting to fill up with the things you like. Of course, you can still add your name and favored treasure. I will add your link as soon as I can find an object that fits the description of what you like to find when antiquing.

Let me tell you I am still looking for a cow… yes a cow… someone mentioned a cow.

I'll find it, and hopefully she won't be standing on her last leg!

Some of you asked me how I met Tessa, from yesterday's post. My cousin Sandra, who lives near Tessa, and is her hairdresser, is a friend of Tessa, and introduced us last summer. Tessa came to visit her father this Christmas. We met at our home, and that is when she saw our fountain….

The seven goldfish rode in the backseat of our car, in a large garbage can. I sat in the backseat, as French Husband drove the back roads through the countryside… and of course, those back roads were not straight, and of course, water and fish splashing or jumping out was a major concern… but I put a sheet over the garbage can and held on tight.
We survived. (Though the whole time French Husband and I were thinking, "What if the garbage can flips over and the fish… " … I am sure you get the picture of our stressful ride back home.

I am adding my recipes to the sidebar of my blog, look over there on the right side under French Dressing.

A few of you nearly choked, when I said that Annie's Greek Stuffed Cabbage recipe called for SIX CUPS OF OLIVE OIL…and I am sorry about that!! But in defense of the six cups of olive oil… there isn't any meat in the cabbage rolls, and Annie said meat adds a heck of a lot in fat, and since there isn't any meat you gotta add it in somehow.

Annie, also told me to tell you, that the cabbage we stuffed was ONE GIANT Cabbage, and a giant like that calls for good stuffing… she also said, that the other day we made over thirty, chunky-monkey rolls (okay, she didn't say chunky-monkey but something close to that. I am not very good at French translation.)

Do you have any other burning questions? If not I'll be back later with a Strawberry Shortcake Recipe. Grab a fork and a plate, because it is gonna be good.

  1. You’re turning this place into a real force to be reckoned with. I love it! It must keep you busy all day long! I’m thrilled that you’ve added your recipes. Someday I may want to make one and I won’t have to go browsing the blog for it, which could be dangerous because if I start browsing here hours go by before I realize it.

  2. Nice idea to share your recipes. Thanks.

  3. Just wanted to chime in that that is such a beautiful thing that you were able to do for Tessa and her father. Truly destiny. Beauty in the world.

  4. Oh Corey ~ If I were to visit the brocante it would be a most difficult trip because I like everything!!!!! Oh those table and kitchen linens are a sight to behold. I think it would be especially exciting to find quantities of old laces and ribbons and buttons…..I have a tin of buttons that I’ve cherished for years ~ I love to sort through it.
Strawberry Shortcake sounds wonderful. I’ve got a nice spot in my garden that I’m thinking about planting with strawberries……wouldn’t that be nice?

  5. Strawberry Shortcake mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I love shortcake and strawberries, I really just love cake! hence the rotund tummy. I love the fact that you share each part of your life with us willingly. I secretly wish that I could do the same, I admire you.

  6. Corey,
I love the idea of a specific recipe section, and as far as a recipe for strawberry shortcake…I’m all for that! No doubt it’s going to be fantastic.
Actually, I do have a rather unusual question for you. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful Annie’s hands were in the photographs of her preparing cabbage rolls. I was curious if you and Annie had any beauty secrets that you would be willing to share.

  8. Corey, your blog is such a delight to read when I return home from the evenings I spend at my 98-y.o. Mom’s…. a great start to my day, when timewise you are probably getting ready for your evening meal. Thank you.

  9. What a great idea for all your recipes. I have noticed that you use a lot of lemon in your recipes. How wonderful . . .especially for Spring! Thank you for your wonderful blogs!

1st- I think this is my first time commenting, though I’ve been reading for awhile:)
    Strawberry Shortcake sounds *divine*:)
Also, there’s an award for you on my blog. If you aren’t into them, no worries– but your blogging efforts are appreciated:)

  11. Thank you Corey for such a delightful read. and LOVE the favorite things and the recipes and the heart touching stories. You have a blessed life and have blessed ours in so many ways – thank you.

  12. Corey, thank you for putting together “The Things You Love”. While I scrolled through it felt like I was window shopping.
Hemp sheets?! That got my blood pumping. I have 2 hemp pillowslips and they get softer after washing.
I couldn’t believe the stacks of linen, tied together with string. It’s very difficult to find linen here. And the spools of thread. Oh boy. I think I will need 2 suitcases.
I look forward to the Strawberry Shortcake recipe.

  13. I have a lot of burning questions, but this is probably not the time nor place. 😉
How’s that shortcake coming along? Am just now having lunch (again at my desk at work) and will be craving something sweet for later.

    Hi Corey,
First let me start by telling you I am fairly new to your blog. I found you by seeking all things french. I have read every word in your entries twice now. I just love it all. You are in my bookmark bar and I check you every morning. Yesterday you spoke of your father in your dream. I too, dreamed of my dad after he passed and the feeling and content was so similar I was astonished.
In honor of “Dads” day I decided to fix something my mother used to make us. Meringue Kisses.
After a few hours, the meringue kisses were ready to be served. I spent 5 minutes looking for the perfect dish to serve them in. I know someday my son will see the vintage dish, and think of meringue kisses. Thank you for sharing your life and inspiring us!
    Blessings Galore,

Hello Corey, finally I thought I would write to you, since it is my birthday today, and I would love that plate!
I love your blog, sometimes I think it should be me writing stories of “French Husband” since in my youth I stayed a lot in France and had a French boyfriend (or a couple). Never married in France but happily in Finland for 29 years now.
    See you!
    Riitta from Finland
