The French Antique Guessing Game Continues…

Flower-at-chateau-de-chenon

It is pouring rain outside. BUT there is an indoor brocante today…
and I am going to go enjoy it.

If I find one of the "little things" that I photo-ed yesterday I will bring it home and tell you what it is.
The CORRECT ANSWER has not been revealed, well partly guessed, but not completely guessed, and in all the French Antique Guessing Games I have posted that has never  happened.
Some the guessing game is still continues today.

Please guess again:

  1. A lighter case? If not a match holder.

  2. My husband said an herb pouch.
It might be holding a pair of scissors?

  3. Me again. Does it hold Holy Water? It is too small for regular Rosary Beads, but how about a miniature Rosary?

  4. Diogenes

    It’s a perfume vial.
    That’s my best guess.

  5. Snuff bottle with a spoon attached?

  6. This cute little thing may contain a rosary for prayers, or maybe needles for sewing or stitching…

  7. I’m guessing that it is a tiny dance card holder.

  8. A sewing egg. Holds a thimble…. yeah! That’s my answer and I am sticking to it!

  9. I know I’m a little late in a game, but I think it’s a cigarette lighter!

  10. Very small folding reading glasses.

  11. cocaine vial??
    Pill vial?
    Smelling salts?
    Hat pin holder?
    Ok…this is going downhill fast…

  12. tiny little folding reading glasses

  13. A tiny set of embroidery scissors.

  14. I believe it is a pocket size sewing kit. Holding just enough thread, a needle and maybe an extra button…just in case!

  15. Milza de Figueiredo Drumond

Hi Corey. First time participating but long time reader.I love your writings.
My guess is a Pill Box.
    Milza

  16. My guess is a perfume atomizer!

  17. It was invented to save the sanity and dignity of the neat freaks. Now when that stray crumb from your morning scone hits the tablecloth, or the salt shaker went wild and a few grains strayed past the plate, you can hold the lovely wooden end and pretend to be admiring the rainbow of colors and you twirl it in your hand, and the tassels go to work sweeping the crumbs off the table, and no one is the wiser. Hands free crumb dusting! All the rage now. (hee hee)

I have NO idea what this cute thing really is.

  18. an etui for small manicure items, bobby pins
    or gambling chips
What do the French call bobby pins? Is there a French equivalent word?

  19. M.J. Jacobsen

It’s very beautiful, all I can think of is a place to put a childs first tooth or lock of hair.
    Those bunnies haunt me!

  20. ok, so let’s go with a case for smelling salts….

  21. Ed in Willows

It’s a fishing bobber. The tassel doesn’t belong on it.

  22. “She wanted to make him something special as a gift for their wedding day. He only had a week with her before he had to be out with his boat again, and she didn’t know how long it would take before she had him back. Using her most precious needle case she turned it into a small case for his hook, for his lucky hook. The one he had used to hook her heart. Pink for their love, white for her wedding dress. She added a blue loveknot for their eternal love.”

  23. Kathleen

A toothpick with attached handle on one end and a cover on the other?
Or a case for carrying your miniature dice?
Is your friends son ahead with points for his contest? I’ve been watching his video everyday.

  24. Oh that looks eerily familiar! Like I’ve seen one somewhere before… and if I DID see one before, it would have belonged to my grandfather or great grandfather. Now, they were both cobblers and haberdashers… could it have contained one of those shoe lace hooks?! It certainly is pretty enough to be carried by a lady! =)

  25. ummmmmmmmmmmmmm. I would say to put pills but in 1920……?
    and not for needles?
    I

    n
    o
    w!!!!!
    tell you later…

  26. Could it be a ticket (as in railway) and small change holder?

  27. A case for love notes. You know where you put a tiny piece of paper with message and then carefully put it it in your loved one hand so no one notice it. And maybe there is a tiny lavender flower with it so it smells good.

  28. Maybe it just holds wishes and dreams… Its pretty enough. (:

  29. It is a small child’s rosary . . .I found one when I was very young . . .only decades later for it to reveal its true meaning in my life. Thank you, Corey, for your great imagination and grace in taking the time to share a part of your life with all of us each day.

  30. Okay, so I think it is an antique fishing plug! The tassel is because french fish are very fancy.
Yep, a bass fishing plug that’s what it is. Frank used to collect them.

  31. I am going to say it holds a nail file one that is ceramic or a similar material….but a miniature nail file

  32. …pour un chewing gum! Just the right color, it was a handy place for flappers to stash their bubble gum whilst doing the Lindy Hop!
    Ewww…
Has anyone suggested that it could be a teeny tiny travel size salt and pepper shaker…a cool tool for seasoning boiled eggs on the road?
    Best regards,
    Julie M.

  33. Could it be for a locket of hair?
    ~Debra

  34. Is it for smelling salts for a lady’s swooning?

  35. Or maybe for dried lavender?

  36. Did the neighbors seriously eat the bunnies? Please tell me you are joking.
    I’m too traumatized to guess.
    Nancy

  37. Corey, I’m going to guess (again) that it hooks on a necklace, bracelet or fan. It holds powder that would give instant color to lips and cheeks. You must always be “rosey” ready for that handsome gentleman. 🙂

  38. I am tapping into my French-Basque roots to take another guess…what comes to mind for me is that there is actually a piece of “tailor’s chalk” inside…the tailor would keep the chalk in his pocket and the attached tassel made it easier for him to find and grab onto 🙂

  39. O.k., here goes, it contains… an itty bitty pair of opera glasses for Barbie.
No, that’s not it… It contained smelling salts! That it! A smelling salts holder!
    I WON!

  40. A key case for a clocks winding key…used to hold a skate key… A rattle…an opium case…a hair pin container?

  41. This will be my last guess. A reliquary.

  42. I went antiquing today and noticed something that was similar and it was referred to as a fish float. Not certain… Just a guess!

  43. My second guess was for smelling salt, but that has been guessed. How about for small coins just incase your lover leaves you stranded and you need to rent a horse to get home.

  44. Could it possibly be a snuff holder?
    Sneezing powder?
I discovered your blog, by pure luck, and I am loving it in all its entirety 🙂

  45. Not sure which post to guess on…I’ll put it on both. I’m guessing it is a sock darner.

  46. A Housewife?

  47. last guess, alcohol??? 1920’s.. oh no prohibition on that side of the atlantic…were it older it could have contained arsenic, i had smelling salts already, perfume already, can’t wait to read the answer!

  48. mrsbucket

I think its a celluloid sewing kit, which probably includes a thread winder. Hence the thread coming out of the top. Like a pocket size darner, and I think it has a place for needles and maybe a thimble inside.

  49. A tatting shuttle???
    Sandra
PS: Love the blog and the game. 🙂

  50. Cristina

Hi Corey, at first I thought it was a sewing kit but I seem to remember that my grandmother had one and it held a tatting broach. So I’m guessing that it has to do with lace making.

  51. A vinaigrette?

  52. My first time stepping onto this very magical blog!! I LOVE it! Thank you Corey for everything you do to share with us! I have been glued in on it 24 hours straight!! Anyway, my guess is… I think this holds small tools for eye glasses, like a eye glass kit???
    Janet

  53. I think it must be a needle case

  54. COREY
I could not even response the other day still upset over the bunnies….. I wonder if they would like it if one of them became lunch Ugh
Anyway My Grand mother had one not so colorful but nice she used it for a travel sewing kit. Holding her needles and a bit of thread.
    Best,
Making prayers to make those neighbors BE GONE. .
    Joanny

  55. is a little purse for party times
or to put a message inside and give it discretely to someone just passing by besides….
    🙂

  56. I believe it is called an etui to hold a ladies “small articles”
    Mary

  57. I believe it’s called an “etui” meant to hold a ladies “small articles”
    Mary

  58. Marie-Noëlle

I wrote my few guesses in yesterday’s post…
    Have a good day!
