What The Heck is It, Pray Tell?

French brocante itemFrench brocante item 2

What the heck is it? The responses you gave yesterday, and the day before, were true of many things that look like the photo above. Some of the guesses included were: a tablecloth weight, a perfume vile, an etui (to hold a ladies "small articles"), a cocaine holder, a baby tooth container, a jump drive (I laughed at that clever response!), a pill box, a fish lure, a container for smelling salts, a lipstick, a key case for a winding key, a rattle… but none of those responses corresponded with the real purpose of the object in the photo.

I love that you get into the Tongue in Cheek Guessing Games and diligently try to figure them out. You know, with this brocante hobby of mine, I see piles and piles of old things. While I am antiquing I ask myself, "Would this stump them? Would any of my readers know what the heck this is?" Believe it or not is it hard to find something that would stump most of you.
SO imagine my JOY when I find something that takes awhile for you to figure out.

This little thing was a stumper.

Yesterday, at the indoor brocante in Aubagne I found this Antique Sewing Kit. Since many of you thought that the "guessing game object" had something to do with sewing, I bought it to give to one of the winners. Some of those guesses included: A darn for gloves, a tailor's chalk holder,  a sewing egg, a needle container, a thread holder…
The one I found above is a sewing kit, but the guessing game object is not.

Child's rosaryRosary holder

The guessing game object is a souvenir from Lourdes. It holds a child's rosary and a small statue of the Virgin Mary. The color blue is often depicted, used as a symbol when describing the Virgin Mary's clothing. Hence, a blue tassel.
The winner Mahala guessed:
"It is too small for regular Rosary Beads, but how about a miniature Rosary?"

Mahala I will send you the French antique sewing kit as a prize.

The creative winner is Julie M.. "…pour
un chewing gum! Just the right color, it was a handy place for flappers
to stash their bubble gum whilst doing the Lindy Hop!
"

Julie M. and Mahala please send me your addresses so that I might send you a prize for winning the guessing game.

Thank you, each and every one of you, for playing the guessing game.

  18. Dear Corey,
I just found your lovely blog this morning – May 4. I will bookmark it for sure.
By the way, that little statue is not a depiction of the Blessed Mother, it is St. Therese of Lisieux. She is co-patroness of France with St. Joan of Arc and is probably one of the most popular saints in the Catholic calendar. I have been to France several times and I can guarantee that every Catholic church you enter will have a statue of her – along with Jeanne D’Arc.
