I’ll Drink to That

Annie at 90

Photographs and Text by Corey Amaro. Except the last photo is from La Grotte's homepage.

Annie is ninety years old. I asked the birthday girl how she felt to be ninety, she gave her easy laugh and offered, "You know, I do not look so bad for ninety, do I? Most people think I am in my early eighties. Doesn't that sound funny, early eighties, as if that is young? But I guess I look good for ninety." I told her she looked better than most eighty year old that I knew, and if someone said I was her mother I was going to scream. She laughed and then poked me, and said, "You do not look like my mother! Not even my sister!" I like Annie.

I picked her up at seven, she did not know where we were going, other than out for dinner. As Annie was getting in the car she said, "I wore my pretty skirt, the one I wear for special occasions." As I buckled her in my old, little car, I grabbed her face with my hands and said, "Hey Annie, when you reach Ninety, everyday is a special occasion! I want to see you wear the skirt until it gets holes in it." She laughed, and swat my arm, then we both laughed.

It was like that all evening; Poking, hitting, laughing, simple pleasure stuff, between two girlfriends.

Ninety strong

We went to one of my favorite restaurants, La Grotte. I told the waiter it was Annie's ninetieth birthday. He said, "Then you need to celebrate, I'll bring champagne on the house." Annie looked at me and we both started laughing. She said, "It is a good thing I don't drive. Too bad for you!"

We drank champagne.
Then we had fish soup… As we were eating I asked Annie if she knew how to make it? She gave me that look that said, "Duh!" We talked about fish soup, and how we would make it next week, if my kitchen was ready to handle it.

As the conversation rolled from food, to rose jam, to her past, to present moments she told me about a woman she knows who is unhappy in her marriage. (Married women, single women, and women in general usually end up talking about their relationships, no matter if they are nine years old or ninety years old.)

"She wants to leave him but she doesn't want to leave her home, and her things."

"How old is she? Not that it matters." I teased (Annie left her husband when she was 84 years old)."

"Oh she's young she's around 75. Anyway, she has been unhappy for years. She says she wants to kill her husband, seriously kill him, so she could be alone in the house. But I told her if she kills him she will go to prison and will be forced to leave her home. You know people often get crazy when they get older. But I think being stuck, and feeling trapped makes you do crazy things. "

That is what I like about older women. They state the obvious and go straight to the point. "I'd like to kill my husband." And they respond to the point, "If you do, you'll go to prison."

Annie continued, "Leaving someone you have spent a lifetime with isn't easy. Nothing is easy after all. Everything is a choice."

We drank some more champagne and absorbed each others thoughts.

On the way home, about an hour's drive, Annie sang songs to keep me awake.

She sang, "ninety-nine bottles of wine on the wall…" I couldn't believe it, but she did, except she never went under, ninety bottles, since it was her birthday.

Note: Annie's family celebrates her birthday on May 30th, and has ever since she was a young girl. But on her birth certificate the date is; May 14th. Annie and I celebrate her birthday on this day, and have for years.

    D.

  4. Isn’t saying you’d like to kill your husband normal? LOL.
It looks like you both had a lovely time. Hope to visit Marseille one day. 😀

  5. Annie shares her birthday with my brother! He was 34 this May 14th and is away in India with his work. He has left his wife behind with their two year old boy because she did a pregnancy test the week before they were all due to fly. She doesnt think curry would agree with morning sickness. Does Annie like curry? It wouldn’t surprise me if she did!

  6. My Mom, who lives in an adorable guest house in my backyard, will be 86 on May 25. She would love to go to La Grotte I am sure. We will have dinner much the same as the two of you… one drink and both giggling like girls!
Bless you, Corey. You probably don’t realize how you brighten her day and life. Two way street, huh.
    Many Happy Returns!

  7. Patricia

You are both so lucky to have each other!

  8. It sounds like a perfectly lovely evening of sweet celebration! You’re right. Annie doesn’t look 90. Look at her beautiful hands! I just love her. I can just imagine that poor sweet friend of hers confiding in Annie about her sadness in her marriage. I would come to Annie too. She is wise and kind and true. What an amazing friend you have.

I can’t even stand the smell of fish but I’m looking forward to watching you two make it. An enchanting evening I’m sure we all wish we could have been there.

  13. Happy Birthday Annie!!!!! If I look as good as Annie when I become 70 then I will be thrilled. My mother who is not even in her 60’s yet does not look as good as Annie. It must be French living. What ever it is I would like a bottle of it-Please! Glad you guys had such a wonderful time.

  29. This story is just wonderful Corey – Annie sounds fabulous and I wish we could all be like her at 90! xv

  30. Dinner out with a good friend is one of the best ways to celebrate your birthday – whether you’re 19 or 90. I think Annie must be 19 at heart, and that’s how she stays looking so young. Happy Birthday to Annie! Here’s to Annie’s next decade of living young at heart – Cheers!

Who is that behind those Foster Grant’s? Annie looks marvelous for any age. Favorite Aunty had her 93rd birthday in February. She, like Annie, is in good health and still gives me great advice regarding gardening, cooking etc. and shares many family stories. If someone is in distress, I ask Aunty to pray for them. Somehow it seems her prayers are extra powerful. Ladies like Annie and Aunty are genuine treasures in our lives.

  32. Hello Corey,
My dearest friend is in her 70’s and I am in my 50’s. We do not “see” our age difference.
Obviously, you feel that way about Annie and what a blessing! My mom is 93, so I hope to grow up and be like her and Annie someday.

  33. Cheers Annie! What a blessing to have such a woman in your life Corey! Glean all you can from her and keep sharing with us~ Vicki

  34. You, dear Corey, are a wonderful friend for Annie. I love how you celebrate life!

  35. Spectacular post….both the scenery and the thoughts.
Happy Birthday Annie, from Suzanne on the prairie in Illinois.

  36. Annie, vous avez déjà eu un bien joyeux anniversaire…alors bonne continuation!
Corey, the way you’ve shared Annie’s life with us over the last few months has meant a lot to me. I lost my lovely mom (Anna) last May 19 as she was heading toward the 90 mark. One of my happy memories is cooking dinner for her and some lady friends on her 89th birthday. She started planning the menu weeks in advance!
Thanks so much for letting us share in Annie’s vitality.

  37. I love your heartwarming stories of Annie. I would love to read a book of your shared thoughts and her wonderful wisdom and humor.

  38. Cette amitié est vraiment un précieux joyau ! mille bisous à toi et à Annie
    Sandra

  39. What a wonderful friendship you two have!
    Rabenfrau

  40. Happy Happy Happy Birthday! I wish her so many more. I wish I had a friend like Annie here.

  41. All I can say is Corey, you should write a book. That was such a joy to read and I found it hilarious what you two talked about. I’m glad Annie had the sense to tell her friend she’d go to jail if she killed her husband. Sounds like very sound advice to me. 🙂
    Take care,
    Martha

  42. Sublime! You have an amazing way of describing life. I know I must have said that before but you do!
This blog is a book. A wonderfully new kind of interactive book, that would never have come into being were it not for the ease and allure of blogs! Hooray!

  43. What wonderful memories you are making…without even thinking about it…with Annie!
    You’re a special friend!

  44. christine allen

  49. Happpy Birthday Annie…thank you for sharing your birthday with all of us!!!

  50. Hi Corey,
I love your stories about you and Annie together- She is sounds like she is so much fun. We all need friends who are more like family.
I have a good friend who is nearly old enough to be my mother – she fills a special place in my life – not the role of mom (because there is no one that can do that) but one of being a mentor and friend. We enjoy lots of good times together and she helps me think about personal things in different ways. Laughter and sharing meals together are a significant part of our relationship.
I hope you continue to enjoy many good times with Annie.
Is Marseille very far from where you live?
Good luck with the renovations- it is always a challenge when you are changing something as vital as a kitchen.
    Regards,
    Anna

  51. I have friends like Annie in my garden club. Yes, they have not time not to state the obvious. They are funny, wise and still feel like they are thirty. I know cause I asked.~~Dee

  52. Ahhhh, what a lovely Annie story. She reminds me of my grandma. 🙂
