The Antique Fair inside of Chateau Barben

My friend Audrey picked me up early this morning to go the antique fair at the Chateau Barben. We were giddy with excitement, and talked about what we hoped to find. We imagined ourselves running around with our mouths open, not knowing were to look first. Our expectations were more about going inside each and every room, peeking into closets, and open drawers, seeing their lives unfold in white, monogrammed linens, and hand-painted dishes, rather than buying crowns or gilded furniture.

The Chateau Barben is outside of Aix en Provence, it is over an hour away from where I live. Audrey and I left around six in the morning, the fair was to start by eight.

The posters regarding the antique fair of the chateau (castle) said: "Attic Fair." Every time I thought of the "chateau's attic" up for grabs, I shook with excitement. A feast in the attic, a paradise on earth, almost like being Queen for a day, or at least finding a pea under a mattress! I could hardly stand the wait.

The chateau is surrounded by a stone wall, there are alley ways of trees, a beautiful garden with fountains and statues and a zoo. It is the oldest chateau in the area.Chateau-barben-provence

When we saw the towers, we looked at each other and screamed, it was as if we were two teen-agers going to a rock concert, or something as delicious. My feet were literally running ahead of me.

Then I saw this little annoying factor.
For a brief moment I thought I was dreaming, that I had made this Chateau-attic-fair-thing up in my mind. I felt like Cinderella without glass slippers, caught in the rain, with a pumpkin on my head.
Then I remembered, Audrey, the magic reappeared… maybe this wasn't the entrance?

Cancelled sign in French

Audrey pointed to the sign nailed to a tree….
We looked at it,
then each other,
and sighed in disappointment.

Talk about a popped bubble.
Talk about coming back to earth.
Talk about dreams of toile du Jouy down the drain.

Then we got in the car and drove to Aix to have hot chocolate.

Note: The Chateau Barben attic fair will happen at a later date.

  1. Oh ! you were so close to where I live !!! just a little quarter of an hour !
Nevertheless it is a very nice place indeed !
It is a pity you came all the way for nothing, let me know when you come again !

  2. Now I have to have hot chocolate!

  3. What is it about castles that makes us so dreamy and giddy? I stayed in a castle in Ireland years ago – a rundown, moldy pile of stone that was only part way through refurbishing – and I loved every second of it.

What a beautiful chateau! Oh well, the delay gives you time to save up more money to buy treasures when they do have the sale.

  5. Oh, I think I would have cried. How disappointing. I know you will make it the next time. What a sad event. Hugs, Marty

  6. Oh, no! You drove all that way! Well, at least you had an adventure with a good friend. I’m sure the hot chocolate made it better. 🙂

  7. awwwwwwww, shucks!

All is not lost. You had a beautiful stroll around the castle with a good friend, topped off with hot chocolate.
The good news is you will be repeating this special day at a later date.

  9. I’m so sorry. What a let down. You’ll just have to make the trip again – when it happens for real. 🙂

  12. Oh No! What a shame.
I was so excited for you. At least you got to have an early start and a Hot Chocolate with a friend and you can look forward to another outing sometime in the future.
We had a false start this weekend when we got a text halfway to our sons Rugby match saying it was cancelled. We went home and put the coffee on and made some orange and poppyseed muffins. Sugar always makes things better!

  13. Sorry for your let down! But, wow, what a wonderful place and you still get to return for the antiques and who knows what!!! In Florida, we have an alligator farm. LOL!!

    WAAAaaaaaaa!

  15. Awww Man!!!!!!!!

  16. With my past experience of highly anticipated antique sales, it might not be a bad idea to camp in front of that gate until next weekend and be the first in line.

Perhaps the “family reasons” for the rescheduling were due to a feud over some of the interited items. Something to add to the suspense and mystique of the goods. Unless they call it off completely. Fun to tour but perhaps the prices would have been excessive.

  22. Dude… THAT is a bummer. Oh well… Maybe God just wanted you to hang out with Audrey in Aix.

  23. Hot Cocolate makes up for everything! It is the simplest things that make up for the greatest disappointments. I know, that is why my waistline continues to expand out of control!!! from your comfort eating friend Ana.

  26. OOH Oh Oh My Gosh!! I was so excited reading this post! Your feet running ahead of you and My EYES feasting on your words!! I was just as disappointed as you must have been! No I take that back you must have been devastated!! If I were going there, I don’t think I could sleep until this event was over!! GOOD LUCK and I can’t wait to see it and what treasure you find!

  27. aaawwwww!
Well I have to admit I’ve done this as well…..oh but that anticipation was just wonderful wasn’t it?????

  28. Bummer! That first photo that you took of the Chateau Barben looks like a Fragonard painting. The French countryside has so many shades of gray in their green.

  29. NO, No , NO … By looking at the first pictures , I was totally glued to my screen , i was thinking in my mind old portraits , frames , canopy …
