Sock it to me

Electrical plug cover

Do you see that inox circle flushed on the kitchen counter? That is my new best friend.
You see I did not want to have electrical sockets above the back splash, and there wasn't a  place to put electrical sockets underneath the counter…

When I saw this in a kitchen design catalog I felt I found gold!

Pop up socket

It is such a clever thing. I wish I could say I invented it. To open it you push on the circle and then pull up…

Electrical plug

Presto, electrical sockets at your service.

I never found electrical sockets to be this cool. I love my new functional, practical, kitchen.

Call me crazy, I did not add a garbage disposal, nor a dishwasher, nor an over the stove vent, nor a microwave. But I do have a clever, disappearing, electrical socket, apparatus and it is sweet. Modernity it is my best bud, and one day it too will be an antique.

  1. I have never seen anything like this before?! How amazingly futuristic!
We thought we were very space age when our new house came with a remote button on a key-ring to open our front door… until it died and we reverted back to a traditional key only 18 months later.
I hope you have a longer love affair with your modern gadget!

  2. Corey,
    Tres chic madame!

  3. Thoroughly Modern Corey!!! What a great idea!!!!

  4. Amazing! I never knew anything like this existed. Like my daughters say, “Mom, you’re not the first to know things.”

  5. That is cool. I’m an electrical engineer and that’s the first I’ve seen something like that. Thanks for sharing. So are we going to see the big renovation reveal soon?

It is from Doug Mockett? That’s who makes them here. Tres schwet! (sp?) Give us a few long shots of the kitchen. I’m liking the idea of coral/melon/salmon color with the lovely counters.

  7. and when will we be allowed into your kitchen?
    I can’t wait!!!!

  8. Jeanette M.

I am excited for you. Why no dishwasher?

  9. The pièce de résistance, indeed!
    Socket envy, here. 🙂

  10. That looks so cool!
I only just succumbed to a dishwasher this year and now I’m a happy convert – except that none of my grandmother’s plates can go in it, so if you are using your lovely antique plates and glassware then maybe a dishwasher is not so useful.

  11. Too fabulous for words
    Love you

What a nifty idea! I don’t have a dish washer either, my kitchen is miniature, I have never lived in a house with a dish washer either. I have never wanted one, until this summer, my son is a teenager now and he and his friends are wreaking havoc on my poor little hands with all the dishes they are dirtying. I have an old swinging door in my attic that used to be on my kitchen before I lived here, It just might get installed this week with a lock attached to it.
My sister in law makes a comment about my lack of a dishwasher every opportunity she gets. She must think it unsanitary to wash by hand because she always brings her own cup of drink when she comes. I feel better now knowing you don’t have one either Corey.

  13. That is the coolest gadget. But no dishwasher? I’ve had one for the last 35 years and can’t do without it. BTW it hasn’t been the same dishwasher for 35 years…I’ve had several.
I thought I needed a disposal but in our new house there wasn’t one and I’ve discovered I can live without very easily.
Love your new kitchen. Let’s see more.

  14. How deliciously clever! I wish I had thought of that idea!

  15. where were you two years ago when we redid our kitchen?!? What a fantastic idea!
    Have a fabulous weekend,

  16. I love your electric socket. Now I want one.

  17. Oh Corey, I just had to write in “sisterhood”, for I also do not have a garbage disposal, dishwasher, stove vent or microwave…and wouldn’t add them if I did renovate my kitchen.
I wonder how many would be in the no gb, no dw, no sv, no mw club?
So happy for your pleasure in your new kitchen.

  18. Der Corey, love the plugs.. what a life saver. The ones over the counter are ugly anyway. Good for you not adding all those things, we have a dishwasher we do not use, i have a garbage disposal i do not use, i do not have a vent hood, but i don’t know if i could give up my microwave! Not that i cook with it, mainly it’s to reheat and defrost :(… have a super day

  19. Oh my goodness! I wish I would have seen that before my kitchen was finished! Wonder what my husband would do if I asked him to put one in? hummm…then again…maybe I better not ask! 🙂

  20. Corey, what a cool outlet thingie! I had to show my husband, he thought it was cool too.
Michelle, tell the hungry teen boys that if they want to eat they have to clean up after! 🙂 Or paper plates, maybe?

Does it have a GFI (ground fault interruptor) like American kitchen and bath outlets have to have? It turns the outlet off if exposed to water. What a great idea! I love your new kitchen.

  23. I love the little socket thing! How creative!
I can live without my dishwasher (I have one…but prefer to wash dishes by hand), and my microwave (never use it)…but I can’t live without a garbage disposal!

  24. Julie Ann Evins

    v cool, loving it, Jx

  25. Diogenes

    OK, that is awesome.

  26. Socket: ingenious
Garbage disposal: Environmentally unfriendly. Compost that material instead of adding to sewer system.
Dishwasher: Environmentally friendly. Uses less water than washing by hand.

  27. Corey, you are teasing us with these little snippets of your new kitchen!
I must have a dishwasher as I run, at the minimum, 2 loads a day. Seldom use a microwave other than to reheat coffee. I live in the country so my garbage feeds the raccoons and possums.

  28. That is way cool. I want one. Where do I look to get one??

  29. I LOVE that socket!!! As a person with limited apartment styled counterspace, that socket would rock!!! (I really tried to insert something with a rocket in here, but just couldn’t find anything clever in the recesses of my brain!)

  30. Cool! I had never seen anything like this before. Tres chic!

  31. Karen C

Corey, I showed this to my men and none of them can make sense of it.
“So, you have to unplug ALL your appliances EVERY day and put them all AWAY? Like the toaster, the kettle, the sandwich maker? EVERYDAY??”
“Yes, men! ALL the appliances. EVERY DAY!”
Do they make an appliance like this for toilet seats?

  32. I HAVE to have that!! In fact, I want 2 of them!

  33. Marie-Noëlle

I love your socket trick, Corey !!!
    What else ?

Love that socket! I wish I knew about it 4 years ago!
I look forward to reading your blog every morning. It’s how I start my day.

Dear, dear Corey, Your sensibility is delightful. I too have no microwave. Nor do I want one. Or a vent over the stove. Our O’keefe and Merrit backs up to a window. There is a dishwasher, which is kind of nice. I know my husband thought it would be great to get the dirty dishes out of sight. Though I don’t see him put anything into it himself. As my friend in Germany has said on that subject. Another glass of water, another glass. Garbage disposals are another huge waste. What typically goes down them should be put into a compost pile and . . .I’ve said too much. love reading about your life in France. Apricots are in season here. Does Annie make abricot confiture?

  36. oh wow that’s soo cool – i’ve never seen that before!!
