Heading towards Budapest

Goodbye Prague! You were more than I imagined, more than I thought possible, and I do believe we will be back again, I know we will.

This morning bright and far too early we are going back on the bike, heading towards Budapest, six hours away… Six hours straight (!!!) but if we stop, and of course we will, with pit stops for gas, Red Bull, and the toilet, (or I can dream a possible little, charming, place that might flag us down) two more hours are easily added on… eight hours (!!!) Forget little, charming, place. Eight hours is all I can take.

Hopefully, rain will not add time to our journey.

Budapest… certainly I must be dreaming up all this happy adventure.

  3. 8hours is a looooong time on the back of a bike.. I think you have inspired us (that is me and my ‘dutch’ husband) to hire a Harley when we go to UK & Europe next year.. I keep showing him your photos and i see a gleam in his eye… we have even checked out Fly/Ride details on the net…
    safe travels Corey… xo

What a marvelous tour guide you are Corey! But do tell, the fourth photo yesterday…was that you in the window? *snicker*

  6. I visited Budapest in 1995 and I fell in love with the city. I’m looking forward to see your own pics, and I’m sure you will like it.

  7. I used to live in Budapest (twice) and love it, love it, love it. It is not as stunningly beautiful as Prague (what is? Prague is a storybook jewel), but to me Budapest seems more “alive,” more real. Not to mention the views across the Danube at night when the bridges and the Palace are illuminated.
You will also eat well, and the café culture — oh! Divine. Everyone will send you to Gerbeaud, which does have divine cakes, right on Vorosmarty Ter, but my favorite is Muvesz (Artists’) Cafe, across the street and a block up from the Opera (metro stop Opera on the #1, old yellow line). Silk lined walls, marble tables, elderly Hungarian ladies taking tea together . . . heaven.
The only problem is you may have troubles finding an economical place to stay.
Hope you love it! I try to go back every year.

  13. I cannot wait to see it, that is where my husband was last week, for the Grand Prix, Formula 1, he works for Williams F1.
You are having such a fabulous adventure 🙂

  14. If you liked the crêpes in Prague, you should LOVE Hungarian palacsinkas (or palacsintas)! And since you’re on vacation, of course the calories don’t count — promise ;-)))

  15. Like Beverly, this has made me brush up on my European geography! I had NO idea Prague was like that – thank you Corey for the inner glimpses of her beauty. Safe travelling onwards ……

If you can, on your way back, have a ride by – and maybe a swim in – Balaton Lake… or meet Hungarian history and folk at Kalocsa (straight south to Budapest): Strings of red peppers everywhere, embroidery, freeze painting on outside walls… and do not miss the railway station…
You might also like the putsza (plain open country) and its sikos (horse farmers). Try and see what they can do on horseback or on horse-drawn carts … I was stunned by them.
    Have a good time !!!

  17. We are dreaming along with your Corey. I know nothing about this part of the world and you are peeking my interest. Linda

  18. Dreams are wonderful things to experience awake. Safe travels!

  19. When I think of Budapest, I think of mystery. Don’t know why. It just comes to mind. So – I googled Budapest images. OMG, Corey, are you in for a treat.

  20. For a ‘Biker Gal’ you sure look glamorous in the photos below.

  21. Oh Corey, you and FH are living my dream of Budapest. Hungary is the land of my ancestors and I desperately want to visit Budapest.
Please take LOTS of pictures for me…and maybe I’ll live out my fantasy of sailing down the Danube through them.
