2858 miles through Europe the Low Down.

It all started when we realized that our two teen aged children (Sacha 17 and Chelsea 19) would both be away on vacation for three weeks. If you are like us, a mid aged couple who has maybe had a few days alone since the day you had a baby enter your life, the thought of three weeks alone sounded like a lottery ticket: A million dollar temptation of freedom, rather sweet, rather sexy and very tempting to kick up one's heels.

So we did.

French Husband had planned to buy a motorcycle ever since one of our cars started acting up. When the car died, French Husband looked for a motorcycle (the one of his dreams a BMW 1250 RG) and as our name was written on that lottery ticket the motorcycle was for sale that very day!

We bought the bike.

Prague was a city I had always wanted to visit. "Wouldn't it be a dreamy adventure to ride our motorcycle to Prague, it is only 1300 miles away from Marseille." I said to French Husband. He agreed, well after a few facts were ironed out between us that is. Such as I did not want to sleep under a bridge like he did, and since anything over 80 euro for a hotel would not be in our budget, and since French Husband wanted me to experience traveling light to see if I could venture on another more daring trip in the future… we had to iron a few things out.

We brought the motorcycle home 9:00 in the evening on a Friday night, and left Saturday morning at 9:00 in the morning.

i packed, French Husband unpacked. I packed again and we took: Maps, a GPS, a portable phone, tooth paste and two toothbrushes, motor oil, lipstick, a comb, my eye glasses, French Husband's sunglasses, and my headache medicine. We also packed arnica, Echinacea, a note pad, a pen, a flashlight, plastic bags, soap, panty liners, face cream, a razor, calendula cream, my camera, French Husband's pocket camera and portable computer,  two locks for the bike and our helmets, a thermos, granola bars, We each took two pairs of jeans, a swimsuit, rain gear, two pair of socks, two pair of underwear, two tee shirts, one long sleeve shirt, a polar fleece, I took one bra, French Husband took a polo shirt and a belt, I took a black rayon dress, and a pair of ballerinas. We both wore riding boots, gloves, scarves and had our helmets. That was it for three weeks. We used everything and we missed nothing.

Traveling light was easy. I loved the freedom it gave. We never looked into any shops, the only souvenirs we bought were postcards, and truffle olive oil in Croatia.

Our journey took us along the French Riviera, to Milan, around Lake Como, up to Stelvio Pass, through Austria to Admont, then to Prague, after a few days in Prague we rode to Budapest (It was a hard ride since I was not feeling well, plus could not stay awake– the weather that day was awful.) After Budapest we rode to the Balaton Lake, Ljubljana Solvenia, then to Rovinj and Motovun in Croatia.

We found most our hotels or rooms with breakfast, the night before on the internet. We never paid more that 80 euro a night, most nights the rooms costs less. Breakfast was included with our rooms, so we ate a snack for lunch and had dinner out.

2858 miles in 21 days. I passed the test, I am ready to ride again! Bring it on.

We waited for the very last minute to leave Croatia and rode 12 HOURS home, we stopped twice for gas and a quick bite. I never fell asleep though I had a few Red Bulls.

If there is anything you would like to know about our trip that I did not answer (Like did we wash out our clothes every night in the hotel sink and did they dry out in time?) please ask away either in the comments or by email. I will answer them tomorrow along with a list of where we stayed and ate.

We arrived home two minutes after Chelsea walked in the door, and that is not an exaggeration.

  1. I’m happy to read your back home , safe and with Chelsea. I guess you have a lot to tell to each other . You , your eastern europe trip and Chelsea her exotic trip to my favorite country

Thanks for sharing all your trip information and beautiful pictures. It has been fun to wake up to every morning!!

  3. My questions: what would be “roughing it” the next time? Will you sleep under the bridge?
Also, I know you wrote about your dad and the catharsis/healing of the ride. What else did you learn about yourself/your husband perhaps on the road?
And what’s your dream plan/route for next time?

  4. It was fun to experience your trip with you, Corey. Glad to hear that you are safely home.
Did you return by the same route, or go home a different way?

  5. Glad to know you got home safe & sound. I’m sure Chelsea was relieved to see you come through the door!
You wonder if someone will ask, “did we wash out our clothes every night in the hotel sink and did they dry out in time?”
A trick I’ve devised in rooms with built-in hair-dryers is, after ringing out the hand-laundered garments as much as possible, to blow-dry them part-way with the dryer before placing them on hangers to dry overnight. If they still aren’t completely dry in the AM, I blow-dry them some more, which usually (pretty well) finishes drying them. Worst case scenario is that I wind up wearing slightly damp clothes, which finish drying on my body — but then again, no one ever died of THAT!
Tell Annie that a bunch of us are now looking forward to reading about her, and about whatever local produce is now in season there!
Farmboy Husband has finished teaching and turned in his course grades for the summer semester, so besides preparing for the fall term has been canning peaches — seconds, which tend to be riper and are free to boot, woo-hoo! — from the farmers’ market (he buys firsts that we eat fresh), while I polish the manuscript for one of my two books coming out on Sep. 20 — full-tilt panic time!

  6. great trip!! and so wonderul to follow…;)))

  7. ps oh and you have a typo…it is slovenia..;)

  8. Glad you are home in love and peace and you will dream of this adventure for years to come

I have always had this quote for my son.
    Love you ♥

  9. Glad that you are home safe and sound. Will the U.S. be the next motorcycle adventure?

  10. Are you still going to California this summer???
    Maria

  11. Wow! You guys are amazing!
Glad you made it back home safe & sound.
Thanks for taking us along for the ride!

  12. Thank the good Lord you are back safe and sound, Chelsea too! What a trip, just amazing, and to think we were with you every mile of the way – thanks for the awesome ride Corey!
Will e-mail the pics from Willows now you’re home – have already posted twice on your mom’s delightful shop and have another one ready about meeting Sacha. Stop by my blog when you have rested………and done the laundry, LOL!

  13. Loved your packing list. I wonder if I can get away with similar for 4 weeks in europe!

  14. Arnica is great stuff, isn’t it?
Actually the first question I was going to ask was “did you wash things out at night/did they dry?” You beat me to it.
So, here’s some more….Will your new friends from Croatia come visit you?
And, if you had to pick one place, which was the most “magical” of the trip?

  15. What a trip of a lifetime!! So glad you made it home safely!!! It has truly been great fun “traveling” with you!
    Isabel

  16. Glad to hear you are home and safe. What a ride, eh? If your next adventure is to travel on Willow from coast to coast USA, I do hope you will stop to visit! We’ll sit on the patio and drink iced tea, have lunch from my garden and maybe do some duo riding if I can roust out my friend with the motorcycle 🙂

  17. Jeanette M.

I think I loved your trip almost as much as you did! I just got home from Germany yesterday and on your advice we took an overnight trip to Prague and we even stayed at The Castle Steps per your advice. We loved it. All you promised and more. It was the highlight of our trip – thanks!

  18. Did Willow live up to her carefree name? It gave me such a “yay” moment everytime I saw that you were still calling her by the name that I thought of! Your dad must be smiling at your big journey and the fact that you want to go again! Must be in your blood, eh?
I loved reading of your adventures and now dearly want to go cafe hopping in the alps with my husband and 7 year old!
    Glad you are safe home!
    ~Jennifer

  19. Love the re-cap, and the packing list! I love to travel light, sometimes I am more successful than others. Usually take a carry-on bag for a months trip. Of course, at the end of the trip, I never want to see those clothes again! Glad you are home safe and sound.

  20. It’s been so enjoyable to read about your trip. I’ve been amazed that you found a way to post every day! And I’m looking forward to hearing more about it tomorrow. I even watched the entire video where you were filming the drive in Italy~~:-) I kept pretending I was at the places you visited….

  21. I have enjoyed your adventure right along with you thanks to your postings. It was an inspirational travel adventure which I have been sharing with my hubbie. Thanks for taking the time to provide all the fine details and wonderful visuals.
btw…Did the hand washing dry overnight???

  22. Wow, Corey, you really traveled light! I always pack to much for traveling, but I’m learning…
Thank you for your wonderful traveling journal and those beautiful pictures.
    Hugs

  23. An exceptional trip and safe ride was had for sure. Couldn’t help it, but I had a bit of jealousy surface following you and Yann. A beautiful experience! Glad to see you and FH arrived safe and sound.

  24. Fun!

  25. Thanks for the ride! What a dream. Did you loose, gain or stay the same weight? We just drove across the USA. I had a map in my lap and said go that way. 3,130 miles in 7days. It was an adventure. Nothing like what you did. I’m so proud of you. I know you feel so good about yourself. That’s a big thing. Safe and sound.
    Sue-Orlando,Fl

  26. Wow, Corey, I’ve followed your trip along, which was such a treat! The photos your shared made me want to travel immediately, just not on a motorcycle… Thanks for taking us along! 🙂 Silke

  27. Welcome home Corey and French husb. Your adventure sounded heavenly. Glad you’re home safe and sound. You are so much fun!

  28. You DO know that if you go on that US motorcycle trip next year you have to stop and stay here overnight! Thanks for the fun vacation, it felt like I was right there with you, maybe in a sidecar.

  29. So pleased you got home safe and sound.
I enjoyed your trip soooo much, it was a brilliant read, and photos are amazing. Thank you.

  30. I’ve loved following your travels on the map and reading each days entry. It’s so wonderful to know that you, FH and Chelsea have returned home safely. What amazing timing!
Others have asked my questions, except that I’m wondering what other trips are in your future in europe, when you’ve had time to think about it. Traveling on the bike seems to be in your blood now and is such a wonderful bond for you and FH!
Huge thanks for your daily entries, which was amazingly kind of you! You gave a hint once about finding a wii spot more about that would be interesting too.

  31. You will have free room and board all across the USA. Let us know when you’re coming. The door is open.

  32. welcome HOME…
looking forward to your post trip reports and all.
do not think i could have traveled so light.
    hugs

  33. I followed your trip daily and felt like I was there with you travelling. You know when you said you were going to Croatia I thought daring, so much has been said about Coratia, but it looks breathtaking and I would love to go there. On your trip did you have any trouble with the local people, or people in cars while on the motorcycle.

  34. What a fantastic adventure!! Looking forward to the cross-USA adventure… adding that you have free room and board (breakfast/lunch/dinner/whatever!) in southcentral PA!

  35. Dear Corey & Yann,
well done, altogether. Now get used to your life at home and let all the memories sink in.
    Love, Lieselotte

  36. what a dream! talk about good timing! you are now officially my HERO(ine), Corey! I’m so proud of you! Did you know you had it in you all along, or were your channeling your dad?

  37. Corey,
What an amazing adventure! It was such a pleasure to read your daily insights and impressions of the countries you visited. Again, it was such a treat!
I have a couple questions for you:
I was curious if you had any problems passing through customs as you traveled from country to country? -And-
Of all the wonderful pictures you took, which is your favorite, and why?
    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  38. Much fist pumping happening in my little corner of the world in honor of your team accomplishment!

  39. That was incredible, Corey and Yann! Well done, well done! Fantastic reportage!

  40. Great video!
I’ve worn damp clothes more than once! Traveling in the late spring in the south is not always pleasant, RAIN. Loved to travel in the fall – my favorite time to be on a bike. (I know you call it a motorcycle, but around here, most call it a bike.)
My question – did you ever get stopped for speeding, or just because??
Plus one more – would you take the same trip again, and if so, what would you change? (I like to revisit with itinerary changes.)
    MimiG

  41. Massilianana

Oh yes , that question burns my lips : did you manage to wash and have your clothes dry in the morning ??? I mean , only 2 knickers (I would have taken at least 7 !) and ONE poor little lonely bra ??? .
Anyway , chapeau bas for this amazing and beautiful trip you took !

  42. We’re flying into Budapest in September for a 2 week trip, so I’ve been reading your blog closely for ideas for our trip. Many thanks.

  43. christine

Thanks for the vacation run down….So glad you returned home safe.
    Christine

  44. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. It sounded fabulous. You’ve also inspired me. The husband has long wanted to get a sailboat and sail around the world, which I’m not too thrilled about. But I’m much more willing to consider a motorcycle trip through Europe, and may encourage that over the next 15 years rather than a sailboat 😉

  45. I have enjoyed taking this journey with you so much! If you ever get to Minnesota, you certainly have a place to stay with us. Just sayin’! We’d treat you and Yann like royalty, it would be so fun for us.

  46. A fabulous idea and an even more fabulous trip. You all seemed to have had a great time and sounds like it was well earned. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Can’t wait to get the list- hopefully one day I’ll get to write my own entry on the places you stayed. Take care!

  47. thank you so much for sharing your most excellent adventure. I lived vicariously through you!
I would love to hear more about Hungary. The people, the landscape, the culture, the music…oh dear Corey…EVERYTHING about Hungary…

  48. Congratulations, Corey. I kind of travelled with you and enjoyed it a lot. I asked my husband and would like you to know that any time you decide to turn your adventure towards Latin America our house is opened to receive this courageous and adventurous couple.
Thanks for the generous away through which you showed all the steps pf the journey.
    Kisses.
    Bethania.

  49. Kathleen in Oregon

What a fantastic trip. Now that you’re home safely, I’ll confess motorcycles scare me. My husband was a fireman and emt for many years and has too many stories of accidents–trust me, you don’t want to know. Even so your posts had me riveted from the momemt you got out the maps.
Other than the questions already asked, I was wondering how FH feels about your personal stories?

  50. Denise Leavens

Is God good or what? Wow, two minutes after Chelsea came home! Simply AMAMZING. I can only imagine what this trip has done for your relationship with French husband. Blessing to you sweet Corey.

  51. Firstly I would like to thank you, Corey and Yann for sharing your trip with us. I have loved every minute, I feel like I have been reading an adventure novel that has kept me wanting more. It has been fantastic. Then what can I say about your photo’s, just that they were breathtaking. Thanks again and I am glad you both have arrived home safe and sound.

  52. Kathleen in Oregon

Another question, can you make a file/category for Annie? I’ve been searching for the post which tells where her family is from and can’t find it…

  53. I followed your whole trip, what excitement. You are so brave, I could never do that, only in my dreams.

  54. Such a treat Thank you for sharing. What was your favorite place, moment, best memory(that you can share, that is).

  55. Alena Moss

Corey and FH-Congratulations! Great trip, thank you for taking us with u. O, how much I miss my homeland. My 19 year old daughter just came from back there, also visited Croatia. Glad u guys had good time!

  56. I’m rolling around giggling over here Corey! Husband and I only toodled up to Cambria (four hours north of us) for a few days and we took bags, and bags, and bags!!! We would have never been able to leave the curb if we’d been your traveling companions and motorcycle mates. 🙂
Glad to hear you and Yann have made it safely home. Rest easy. Sweet dreams.

  57. Ariane Cagle

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a wonderful trip you had. I loved all the photos and stories. And the videos made me feel like I was riding along with you. Except the one in Italy gave me a fright for a moment because I thought French Husband was passing several cars and trucks around corners and through a tunnel into incoming traffic. Silly me… It was truly a trip of memories!!!

  58. Oh Corey, I missed a few days of traveling with you but now I am all caught up. You meet the most beautiful people in the most beautiful way. You are such a treasure.

  59. Wow! I’ve been very impressed with your travels, mostly because i’d be terrified to ride one block on that motorcycle! I’ve enjoyed reading your daily updates and have already saved some of your recommendations for future (hopeful) travel to Prague and Budapest. I did wonder how you were able to navigate your route while on the bike, as it seems you didn’t stop all that much?

  60. Corey~
Welcome Home! Did you get to antiqe at all… dumbdumb question I know…. but I have to know. I know you didn’t carry home any vintage treasures for sure….but did you happen to find any that you shipped home? I am glad you are home safe.

  61. This ride was such an adventure! but I’m sure you’re happy to be back home.
Cannot wait to see more of you pictures from the trip.

  62. Oppps Sorry Corey…. I just found my answer, because I missed this part… I see no shopping… nevermind. What freedom! Your soul must be so full and perfectly balanced after this trip.
    xo’s

  63. I have truly enjoyed each and every one of your posts and photos. Thank you for taking so many of us on your trip!

  64. What an adventure. I really admire you for doing it. There’s no way I would have done it, I hate being out in weather without cover, such a wimp am I.

  65. Corey..when you got home…that 2 minutes after your daugher arrived…after 12 hours on Willow…could you actually walk upright? Two hours on the couch and I get up walking stooped over and shuffling my feet like a little old lady!!!
    How are you feeling?
    : )

  66. Julie Ann Evins

You have brought your trip to life, a wonderful travelog which I have enjoyed immensely. I now have an appetite for Croatia. You are incredibly brave to jump on the bike and go. Should have seen it coming when you jumped off that rock. Isn’t the lifecycle wonderful that you and Yann have been granted the freedom to be teenagers again and this time with years of wisdom & experience ? Welcome home, Jx

  67. You two are wild, and willing, and we are the ones along for the ride.

  68. What an awesome adventure. Thanks for sharing. Glad you had a safe and what sounds like a wonderful trip.

  69. i have no idea how i found your blog, but i love hearing your tales of adventure. what a great experience you must have had. i can’t wait to have time to read it all. how thrilling. all except the 12 hour trip home and the riding while ill. i guess you have to take the good with the bad on a trip like that. one bra? i love it!!

  70. Oh Corey! what a trip!! Tell FH brownie points for taking you on such a fun trip! We have traveled 1500 miles in a weekend! So to take a trip that long in that many days would be heavenly! And I know the roads were not long and straight, so curves and twisties are just gravy on the biscuts of motorcycle riding!! You go Girl!!! Glad you found your ‘iron butt’!!!

  71. I closely followed your motorcycle ride through all the amazing places you visited and loved every minute of the ride. I never knew that through one of your posts I too would have an amazing experience. Had it not been for your advice in you post on How to Ride a Motorcycle the outcome of my experience might have been far different.
This past weekend my husband came home with a motorcycle to test drive for the weekend. We have friends who ride and he has been toying with the idea of getting a bike to join them. He had not ridden in over thrity years and I had not been on the back of a bike since he sold his last one. I was nervous!
The morning of our test drive I clicked on your blog and here I read, “Trust the one riding the bike, and if you don’t trust the rider….get off the bike.” I have trusted this man as my mate for 30 years and he has never let me down. I stepped out on the wings of trust and flew on a short 55 mile test drive.
I remembered your advice about leaning and I let my body move naturally in tandem with his. I knew I had passed the test when he reached down and placed his hand on my knee, just as Yann did on your ride. It was like a bendiction or a blessing.
When the ride was over he grinned and said what a great job I did. I never could have done it had I not read your post that very moring to give me the advice and courage I needed. Thank you for sharing your journey and your advice.
    Blessings,
    Sandy
