Measuring up Summer

Sach home

Sacha comes home.

The in between, that is what I call it, when you are standing in between two worlds that you love…saying good bye to one and hello to another. There are times when being in between feels best, because saying good bye is too hard and saying hello turns the page… Jet lag gives us that in between time to soften, smooth out, sort out and swim in between shores.

Sac safe

We wondered if Sacha would feel in between the two worlds…

Bittersweet, tender and saturated with images, dipped with oodles of memories. Yet happy to be home, noticing how everything looks the same but feels different.

Sac arrives

A box full of supplies… chocolate chips, cracked walnuts from Aunt Louie, dried cranberries, gum, chai tea, tortillas… I love the box of supplies. It is like having a bit of that life feed us on this side.

He looks happy carrying that big box. That made me smile, I put my camera down and went to greet him, pinching his cheeks while letting him carry the big box to the kitchen table.

Chels and sach

Oh the comforting joy of having your children back safe in the nest. Bliss. Makes the in the in between less foreign.

Sac and fab greeting

Sacha's best friend from childhood came over to greet Sacha. In France when you meet someone you greet those you do not know with a hand shake, and those you know with a kiss, one on each cheek and in some areas of France you double that. Though children greet everyone with a kiss until they are eighteen. Quick culture lesson– XOXO though without the Os. (Xs are kisses right?)

Sac and Fab comparing tans

Before dinner they did that boy thing of comparing who is who…. it has been a annual end of summer check up since they were ten or so…. It started with:

1) Who has the better tan?

Fabrice grabbed the first point. He went surfing in Biarritz, sailing along the French Riviera, and went with his family to Corsica. Those places reek of golden sun worshiping. I envied his natural highlighted hair!!!

Sac and Fab beards

2) Who has the thickest beard (or has facial hair)?

Sac and fab height

4) Who is taller? Sacha has me to thank.

and last but certainly not least…. this year they shocked me. They threw me out of the loop… Sacha
noticed that Fabrice was buffed, that his muscles under that tee shirt
were way bigger, way more intense than his own…

Sac and Fab

5)……………. You get what I mean.

The end of summer. The in between softens, becomes smooth, sorts out and swims to shore.

Prayers answered, as we gathered around the table, my family is safe, sound, altogether with stories to share. Happiness is this.

  2. Hi, I read your blog all the time and thought I would finally put digits to keyboard and make a comment.
Hold the ‘in between’ moments, they are so precious and fleeting and something that is just so easily forgotten. Great to grab the photos and file them away in that box of ‘times’.
Your blog gives me my daily French fix and keeps me going between visits to my favourite place in the world.
    Keep up the good work,
    Hi from Scotland,

  8. O the boys of summer! :-)))
The In-Between-World! I know thee far too well!
There are times when I envy those who have always lived in the same place, or at least in the same country, no, even on the same continent would do. Then again, I count my blessings, there is something truly fulfilling knowing that one can be at home in more than one, in two, even three different worlds. I see you rejoicing in the loot Sasha brought back, I imagine you savouring every single dried cranberry (what, no pecan nuts? Everyone who takes off from to States to come here, carries a bag of pecans, the best nuts in the whole wide world).
All the joys in the world to you!

  9. Evelyn Jackson

    Life is good, eh?

  10. Julie Ann Evins

The competition between boys is so much more healthy than with girls I think. With girls it would be a little more intense I think.. Happy golden days, Jx

  11. I would love to be at your dinner table tonight, oh what stories will be told. Have a great time tonight.

  12. How lovely indeed.
    I love you
    Jeanne

  13. I just love teenage boys! My own is 17 and a senior in high school this year. He would have fit right in with all the comparing. They are just so much fun!

  14. He seems so much older! I guess it is all the California sunshine.

  15. A summer of adventures to share! And, Mom and Dad didn’t just sit home, did they. We’re off to see our baby and her babies tomorrow. Hug them while they’re still at home before they set sail.

  16. welltraveled10

I just had the biggest grin on my face reading your amazing blog this morning.Thank youagain for a great start to my day

  17. What a delightful post!
Your pictures are full of fun and life.
    Welcome home Sasha…
    be always coming home.

  18. In those pictures you can see the Amaro side of him. Reminds me of your brothers growing up and their goofy sides. I am a huge fan of the Glenn County walnuts, they’re the best!

  19. With my children out on their own your post made my face and my heart smile BIG….enjoy your moments as they are precious!!! Welcome home Sacha!! I bet he can’t get enough stories about your Willow ride!!

  20. COREY! Are you on Twitter?

  21. Nancy from Mass

what lovely gifts to bring home…cracked walnuts and Sacha! You must be a very strong woman to take pictures instead of running and squeezing him! (I can barely manage 2 nights without my son…never mind 2 months!) Thanks for sharing!

  22. How well I know that ‘in between’ moment. It is so nice to see photos of Sacha and his friend…they are lucky to have such a friendship.
My son will be coming for a visit in a week…I am counting the days.

  23. Every morning I read your blog. It’s my
start to the day. You enlighten me, give
me a French fix, make me smile as I face the
    new day.
Thank you for taking us along on
your wonderful European trip! You take us
to places we might not otherwise visit.
I am considering coming to Provence next
    spring. Visiting those Brocante markets
will be of top priority for me. Also
sightseeing, eating and just enjoying the
French way of life. If any other blog readers are interested in coming along
maybe we can get a group together.

  24. The boy is becoming the man he will be. How wonderful for you to see that.

  25. I love everything about this post! Sacha looks so happy to be home, so proud to carry the box of goodies, so happy to be photographed by mama, knowing that these photos will brighten all of our computers this morning. thank you for sharing this special moment.
I remember the first time I saw two guys greet each other with bisous…I couldn’t believe it! and I LOVE it! Two rough tough looking guys give each other smooches when they greet, nothing better. It took my husband awhile to get used to being kissed by his french buddies, but he loves it too. xxxxx’s to you!

  26. Those of us who have been blessed to live in two worlds simultaneously (bi-culturals and their third culture offspring) learn to navigate this space. But the bittersweet never really goes away – we carry the angst in our souls. Today my son moves to LA and I find myself in the in-between. Been there all week and even blogged about it myself yesterday. Eerie!!

  27. Corey,
As the mother of sons, I can relate to another “in-between” stage. That being part boy and part man. He has a foot in both worlds right now.
How sweet of him to carry home a box of goodies! I’m sure he has a lot of wonderful stories to share with you.
    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  28. Love this post Corey! So much fun to get to see Sacha and his childhood friend and the affection and antics, they share. & so nice they let mom capture those moments too!
I always get a kick hearing about your care packages from home. The aroma of chocolate chip cookies will be wafting by soon and what will you make with the tortillas? Enchiladas, tacos or burritos?
Did you hear my tummy rumble? Off to get some breakfast …

  29. I am so happy for you that your family is together again. I am sending Ashley off on Monday to Paris…….my table will be just hubby and I for awhile!

  30. what a sweet post- someday that will be me…

  31. You must be so incredibly proud!
That being said, as you are so like me, my boys would be looking at me and asking “why are you sitting there shooting photos when you could be helping me unload this car?!? 🙂
I know it will come, but I already know how much I will miss my boys when they begin to live their lives on their own and are away from me for more than a week at a time…
    Lovely post my friend,
    xo

  32. How happy for you!

  33. LOL I was wondering when they would be comparing muscles!!! My young men do that all the time!! Where’s your 6 pack???!! I LOVE that pic of sissy and bro hugging!!! mmmmmmMMMMMM, walnuts! and can’t beat pasta with butter and cheese! YUM! Happy Week-end in France!!

  34. Sitting at the dinner table with family. Truly the best in all the world.
A fun post, this one !!!!

  35. So glad Sacha is home safe. Now for the catching up.

  36. Oh, my. Your children are precious. But just from these black and whites, and with Sacha’s more full head of hair I can see how strongly he resembles you. Or better said, in his expressions we can see you. I am sure as a mom you see his “Corey” moments, “FH” moments and then all his own Sacha ones.

  37. Corey, you know you get me when you talk about the boys. I have a soft spot for them, I guess it’s because I have 3 :)! Mine measure each other up all the time. They have fun with it, nothing serious. That is why I love them so, they have fun minus the drama. OOPS, did I say that. Blessings, Kimberly

  38. So happy for all of you! I know the “home-safe-and-sound” feeling! I think ALL mothers understand!

  39. Brother Mathew

Glad to see you made it home safe and sound Sacha. Sam and Joe have changed. No more pleading of visits to Mom’s. I’m sure they miss you.

  40. Glad you are all together again. What stories you will share…..so many countries visited this Summer between the four of you!
Well at least we got to meet Sacha and that was such fun…………tell him we said hello, and send best wishes for the coming school year.

  41. I just recently found your blog and love it. Lets me escape for a few moments a day.
    Greeting from Canada

  42. COREY–Sacha is SOOOOOOO his mother’s son here. That face! Those expressions! That spirit! I know he has a lot of FH in him, but in this blog post he seemed all you, baby! 😉

  43. Hi Corey,
I say ditto to everything Roz said in her comment. I begin every morning with your blog! You inspire me beyond words, with your zest for life and adventure, your optimistic outlook in every new or trying situation, and the boldness with which you approach life and love. Your life is just wonderful! You express yourself and share your world with breathtakingly beautiful photos and heart-tugging, emotion stirring stories. My day is better because I come here and fill my pockets with joy from you every day. I am planing a trip next year to visit friends in Maisons-Lafitte, and would love to make it to Provence on the chance that we could meet at a brocante perhaps.
    P.S. welcome home Sacha!

  44. Oh, Corey your post brings me happy tears for you and your family.
My dh, who looks at your blog over my shoulder, and I well understand the in between life. We now have it with one of our grandchildren too. Partings are never pretty…
We used to tote tortillas and sour dough bread across the country.
Thanks for, the oh so happy, pictures of Sacha’s homecoming!
    Welcome home Sacha!

  45. Hasmin Cannon

Super glad both your kidlets (should I even call them that? anyway, they will always be, right?) are safe from their travels and that they are back home. Always fun to get some goodies from the “home” land, yes?! ((hugs))

  46. Anonymous

I love that a while back you posted about how you alwasy make funny faces in photos. Then you posted that cute shot of you and your daughter being silly. And then we see your son doing the same thing! I love family traditions/traits like that.
Also, loved his T-shirt with the Calif state flag when he first got home! Only a fellow Californian would notice that! Congrats on having him back.
What are you going to make with the tortillas?

  47. Beautiful, the love is oozing out of your post! I have a daughter, 5 and a son, 19 months. I often wonder what the separation will feel like when they are older. Now at least, I know what the return feels like! Thank you.

  48. Alena Moss

    Beautiful!!!!!!!

  49. Such a sweet post– full of a momma’s love.

  50. My eyes filled with happy tears as I read your post. I’m so happy that your family are all together and enjoying the moment. Thank you for sharing with all of us.

  51. Ohh,,so wonderful ..I remember those “care” packages full of goodies!

  52. What a GORGEOUS post! I was THERE, I felt the love and pride through the lens. You are in love no doubt about it, with your children. It’s the most marvelous feeling that ever existed and will ever exist. That: what-a-beautiful-person-you-are-and-you-are-directly-associated-with-ME feeling.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
    Denise

  53. What a beautiful start to my morning, Corey. Family all together again, in one place, within easy reach of each other. Life is perfect, once again.

  54. How sweet to have your child back home…I don’t think I’m handling the “growing up” part of raising children very well.
