Doing the Antique Thing

….I am not home, the antique fair has me…

….Cornfields do not have internet access, but it does make for a good bathroom when need be. Was that too much information?

I'll post photos when I come home…which will be after I take a shower.

What did you do today?

  1. me? I sat at home twiddling my thumbs waiting for the grandbaby to be born.. still no sign of him yet… and all by myself too as dutch husband is playing with his new toy – the 2nd Harley.

I nursed Keith who is having to lay in bed with his broken leg raised. It has bled internally which has caused a complication and he may have to go for more surgery. Poor thing. All I can hope for is a toned bottom to replace my old ladies one from a month of running up & down the stairs. I meant to tell you that we went to see “Coco Avant Chanel” last month with a Q&A from Ann Fontaine the director. Despite the poor crique I enjoyed it enormously. Did you go ? Cannot wait to see your finds, Jx

  3. Julie Ann Evins

    Sorry I meant poor “critique”

  4. Rabenfrau

I’m going to work in my garden, that is, after I manage to turn out my computer
    😉

  5. Going to church and then playing with my children. Have fun!

  6. Ana Jacas

I have just had my hair done, after a disastrous holiday I needed to lift. I am at home contemplating my future which seems to be due for a big change. I am also working out how to fund my trip to La Madonne, I wanted to go in October but am not sure, so at present am juggling ideas in my head. Wish I was with you antiquing though. Have fun.

  7. I hope the cornfields have not been harvested yet!!! 😉
I played the Italian mamma part today, cooked for the family: Vietnamese summer rolls and Austrian plum dumplings for dessert. Care to join? Coffee’s being brewed as I write!

  8. This weekend I’ve been proofreading the galleys for TWO books that are being published on Sep. 20 — including revising one last poem translation that had stymied my co-translator and me intermittently for years. Ooh, not much pressure there, huh? And, oh yeah, I wrote a long post for your blog re my reminiscences of JFK, but you already knew that 😉
Farmboy Husband took pity on me, so fixed a nice dinner for us last night, including cooking spinach ravioli (frozen) and topping them with Alfredo Sauce (ready-made) and Parmigiano Romano cheese, and steamed buttered fresh sweet corn that he’d bought at our local farmers’ market earlier in the day.
I also took out a couple hours during and just after dinnertime to watch ABC’s live TV coverage (with Charlie Gibson and that cutie George Stephanopoulos) of Ted Kennedy’s funeral procession in Washington DC, including the stop in front of the Capitol, where hundreds of Kennedy’s former staffers and colleagues (including nonagenarian West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd) all sang a heartfelt “America the Beautiful” (and I lost it). The procession was running so late that it was nearly dark by the time of the 21-gun salute and “Taps,” although if you’ve seen the images online you’ll know that there was a vivid sunset at the cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, last night. Politically, it’s the end of a generation.
Worked till 3 AM, caught a few hours’ sleep on the couch (didn’t want to disturb hubby) — and now it’s back to proofreading all day, because time and printers wait for no woman!

  9. I’ve babyset two electrical boys (7&6, from 7pm yesturday to 1pm today), added to my two electrcal children (7&5).
I’ve met a girlfriend to the parc; she was with her two children (7&5).I had not seen her since last summer. She used to live in the same street we are living in. She went to live in the country, three years ago, 4 hours driving from here.
In the parc,I’ve screamed out, shouted loud, laughted , climed up into the tree to catch my boyboy who couldn’t get down, and wached 8 feet back home…
What would’nt I do to go salsa dancing….
(The Two electrcal boys’Mam is supposed to babysit my two electrcal children for me to go to dance!!!
I wish to go soon <3

  10. Well, actually decided to take the day off from cleaning, running errands, grocery shopping, etc. All the boring things one does on a Saturday after working all week.
I went to the theatre and saw Julia and Julie. For those of you who don’t know, it’s the new movie about Julia Childs. Since this movie hit the screen, Julia’s book called Mastering the Art of French Cooking has hit the New York Times #1 Best seller list. The book has been reprinted for 48 years and never got on this list. Everybody is on the Julia Child’s band wagon. Cooking schools are now
offering classes with recipes from Julia’s book. Julee Rosso Miller, author of the Silver Palate cook books, has sent out a e-mail from her Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck, MI., with stories about her friendship with
Julia, since she was 24 year old. She attended Julia’s husband Pat’s birthday at
Chanteduc in Vaison en Romaine in Provence.
I decided to look up Chanteduc and I do believe that another French cook, Patricia Wells, has purchased that property and is
    offering cooking classes there.
I am taking my girlfriend to dinner to celebrate her birthday at a local French restaurant that is offering a 3 course prix fix menu using Julia’s recipes. Another French Fix.
I am waiting anxiously to see what you have purchased and/or photographed to show us
on your blog from your antiquing weekend.

  11. I’ve been to Blair Castle Horse Trials in Scotland, acting as groom for friend from France jumping his horse there. Great fun but tiring and I am now covered in mud due to Scotland’s less than lovely weather. Maybe not France but a nice weekend all the same.

  12. Not nearly as much fun as you. I went with my daughter and a couple friends to see Julie & Julia. We really liked the movie.

  13. Kimberly C.

did I miss it? Wbat was it that your friend had that you wanted and were going to trade for it? I think I must have missed it?

  14. You crack me up. Can’t wait to see your finds!
Today we’re trying to beat the heat – the dead still air doesn’t help. Has anyone seen my ocean breezes? They are missing in action.

  15. Today we’re in Victoria, BC to visit our little grandchildren(yesterday was a day full of airplane travel)…sassy little boys (under 3yrs old) named Kiv and Benj. We’ll be traveling up island on this sunny day to visit some tidal pools and splash around. Hugging, kissing and laughing with our babes!

  16. My youngest son just left for college last week, so I decided to gather up my courage and clean his bedroom! Armed with rubbermaid bins ( to sort clothing), a broom, a vacuum cleaner and a dust cloth, I bravely marched into his room to do battle with dust bunnies, rumpled clothing and whatever else crossed my path.
To make a long story short, let’s just say I under estimated the amount of time this project is going to take! lol
    Happy Weekend, everyone.
    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  17. Have fun antiquing! I hope your day has been a special day.
My day is just beginning. I will go to church, have lunch with friends that have just returned from travels in France, and then onto a 9 year old’s birthday party. I am sure it will be a special day.

  18. Ellen Cassilly

cleaned up after a lovely dinner party from last night, went for a great run in the forest and saw a few red leaves of fall. Sweet Honey and the Rock is playing a free concert tonight and I might go. Have fun.

  19. Today I’m helping with math and spanish for my academically challenged middle child…washing and folding laundry…listening to the little league world series…enjoying the last days of summer (though I’d enjoy them a bit more if the temps would fall)…munching on a salad of chicken (grilled last night), apples and walnuts…missing my big boy…catching up on emails and phone messages…and planning for a sweet dinner at my mom’s house.
    Life is good!

  20. Exercise, church, some quick grocery shopping with two squabbling teens, lunch, knitting and listening to John Adams, cleaning, dinner and some work. Enjoying the Sunday.

  21. Corey, you’re so funny. Glad to hear that nature has provided you with restrooms a plenty! I was going to wish you an invigorating shower in French but the translator says an invigorating shower is a douche de stimulation!!! I decided I don’t know you well enough to wish you one of those bwahahaha!
It’s just noon here – we went out to breakfast, looks like the rest of the day will be household drudgery. snarfle snarfle grumble dagnabbit.
Looking forward to seeing all the goodies you picked up at the fair!

  22. Hope you find lots of goodies at the fair. I would love to be there! I am hibernating inside today where there is air conditioning – it’s a balmy 113 degrees today in Phoenix.

  23. so you are just like the rest of us.. any port in a storm. what am i doing, raising my blood pressure. trying to get the modem to talk to the router, the router to the computer (doesn’t look like that is ever gonna happen) and then the printer to the router to the computer…
    i would rather have surgery.

  24. I have been catching up on my favorite blogs all morning and practicing on my new cello. Eating brownies with my husband. Sundays are tough as it is the last of the two days of heaven before Monday arrives.

  25. Today I picked my much neglected basil patch, making tons of pesto to freeze. I ran out of Parmesan cheese.. I wonder if Asiago will do..Next, what to do with the ton of tomatoes? I finally slowed down from my long summer of remodeling a 1946 cottage, to tend the last of the summer garden.
I needed to be outside and keep busy to keep the blues away. I flew Alex, my 18 year old son to college in Portland. Too far away! I’m already looking for an excuse to go visit. I’m glad I still have Morganne at home to pester!
I hope you had a fun day antiquing!!
I had fun catching up on your many adventures.

  26. Hope you’re having a grand time.
Today we: vacuumed, dusted, picked up in general, mowed the lawn, trimmed two trees, did 4 loads of laundry, and are ready for a rest.
Can’t wait to see the treasures you’ve discovered.

  27. I’m enjoying a beautiful and quiet afternoon with a 20 pound cat called, “George,” at my feet. He was snoring earlier…and now…I too, am feeling a bit sleepy.
Have fun, Corey! I’m looking forward to seeing what you saw at the flea!
    Julie M.

  28. Sat on my porch slightly chilled listening to the rain while reading a book.

  29. Lorretta from NH

We, husband and myself, went to an antique fair as well only it was an antique car parts fair and we were looking for parts for a Canned Ham trailer that we are restoring. We met three wonderfully enchanting gentlemen named James and Jim and their oldest fried whose name we did not get. It was a great time and then visited some consignment shops that really provide shabby chic items and ideas for me!:)

  30. you’re so lucky to have all those antique fairs and markets just outside your door. i’m going to check out a couple of junk shops aka my antique-ing hong kong style 🙂
hope you can find everything you want at the fair. would love to see you new treasures.
    Irina

  31. Today I had the pleasure of being in a company of brilliant French man cooking a Moroccan dish outside in the wonderful Californian weather, while sipping a French wine from 2005. And yes – we talked about you and your life and family and blog, so you were with us. Salut!

  32. gilly @ sweet indigo life~~~

I’d love to visit France one day…if I do I’d like to join you for some shopping.
Enjoy! Bring lots of pillows if you are sleeping in the car.
    ;p
It’s been fun catching up with you Corey, happy antiquing! xo

  33. I played a double header in my kickball league. We (Balls and Dolls) (I’m VooDoo Doll and my husband is Gorilla Balls)tied Special Sauce and lost by one to Sons of Pitches!

  34. jend’isère

My local flea market was notably empty as so many were at the big market you visited! Regretting not get up to go there, I found that without the local professionals, the choices here were more ordinary, as well as the prices. Best find: reuniting with friends to compare holiday stories.

  35. Love, love, love to go with you!
Will sleep anywhere, will pee and poop in cornfields, will eat and drink tiny bit and wont complain at all!
    Promise!!! LOL
