The Way to Go to the Brocante in France

Leyment Brocante Fair in France…twenty five miles long, two thousand dealers, over one hundred thousand buyers, once a year at the end of August.

Antiquing leyment

Photo of Nathalie in full gear early in the morning.

We slept in Nathalie's van the night before under a thick down comforter covered with a lovely pink and blue floral comforter cover.

Why have practical sleeping bags when you can go in style. We also had monogrammed pillow cases with lace.

Sleeping in the van

Around four in the morning we woke up to the sound of security guards talking about how they were going to ask us to move our van! Nathalie did not take to that idea gently. Imagine moving the van and trailer ten miles away after we had arrived the day before, and were told we could park where we were.

Down comforter

The security guards taped on the van's window beaming their flashlights in on us. Before I could say boo, Nathalie opened the door and jumped into their faces. They soon found out that the little cute thing standing in front of them with only her tiny tee shirt and panties on, was a a firecracker on speed. She barked back, in more expletives than I care to write on this blog.

In brief the four security guards told her to move her van and she fired back no "&@!#'ç:§" way. Yelling, cussing, a scene out of a movie carried on outside the van while I buried my head under the comforter with the dainty pastel floral cover.

Antiquing

Nathalie got back in the van, under the comforter cover she laughed then teasingly said, "Thanks! You were a big help!" I cheered how she was a gutsy wonder woman, telling her I could have never done what she did. Imagine me a butterball blond saying, "Oh I am sorry, I'll move the van if you can find me an equally as good place as the one we have." Nathalie said, "Yeah that would have worked with those macho, wanna-be, FBI-type security guards. Let's go back to sleep."

…and we did.

Brocante van

Nathalie's van is nearly as bad as my old car. It is dinged, scratched, the fender is nearly falling off and as Nathalie said to me before we left, "I have two pieces of bad news to share with you."

I braced myself as she gave me the lowdown, "One the air conditioning doesn't work." I told her that was fine my car does not have air conditioning period. "Secondly," she went on, "The window on your side doesn't open."

Ah the life of girls who will eat dirt, drive hours to dusty and hot places, sleep in a car, go to the bathroom in cornfields all in the name of love.

Riverside

After hours at the brocante we loaded the van. (Every muscle in my body aches.) and headed home. As we went over a bridge the river below was far to appealing to pass by. Nathalie did a quick fancy u-turn with the loaded van and trailer and we walked down to wash ourselves from the dirt and grim of brocanting.

Later we hiked up the side of the river to go to the bathroom. I covered for Nathalie and then she covered for me. Well wouldn't you know it, just as I pulled down my pants and squatted a group of young boys who were swimming nearby, started running towards me!!! Talk about peeing in your pants! I pulled up my pants so fast and we ran laughing up the hill (Laughing is not a good thing to do when you have to pee.)

Tomorrow I'll post photos of what I found at the brocante. In the mean time I hope you enjoyed the juicy details of a life as a brocanteur with Nathalie and myself. I bet you want to come with us after hearing about it!! If so be prepared to pee on the go and learning a few cuss words in French.

  7. Having been in Nathalie’s company I can’t believe such a sweet, beautiful young woman would stand up with such ferocity (and cussing) to those nasty men!! On the other hand, she is feisty when it comes to doing all that linen laundry at La Madone, painting overhead beams and walls, and turning 18th century doors into magnificent creations that made me cry! Go Nathalie!!!!
You gals had a great time I can see – now I long to find out what you bought during that day in the dust!

  8. I would go with you and Nathalie anytime!! I love that you slept in the van to get a good parking spot. You’re hard core!

    for girls who are brocanting!

  11. A true adventure!

  14. Common Ground

I LOVE this. It just goes to show that us “die-hards” are so alike, no matter what country we are from or where it is! Outdoor pottying, sleeping in vans, a dip in a river…part of the fun of it. What we won’t do for the love of the hunt! Can’t wait to see more photos!
    Debra

  15. Wow, that is some impressive dedication to “brocant-ing”!

  16. You two are my heroes! If only I could have been there with you!
    Happy day!
    Laura

When I go, I notice my breathing exhilirates!!!!and I feel like an animal out in the wilds getting ready for the HUNT!!! hehe I would love to go with YOU and Nathalie! 21. Lieselotte

    Dear Corey,
I can see you had a good time at that
” Schlaraffenland” Brocante. 25 miles and you can do it all on one day ? The sight of that would make my adrenaline level rise to the last notch. Am curious to see what you got.
    Take care,
    Lieselotte

  22. Hello – I had to leave a note for your to say how wonderful your blog is and how much I’ve enjoyed reading your posts. They are creative, interesting and unique – and your photo’s are divine too ! Best wishes and thank you for sharing them …

  23. OMG, Corey, we were cut from the same fabric! It sounds like a page from my life, something I and my three sisters would do.
    Loving you daily. XOX

  24. So fun, what a way to start my morning!

  25. Funny to know that the elegant romantic items we will more than likely see tomorrow had such raw, adventurous and humble beginnings. Someone will later ask you, “Oh, my where did you find that dainty/beautiful/lovely thing?” and your answer will include a dinged up van, a feisty French woman, and taking a tinkle by a river. Hee, hee. Or maybe you have had these tales to tell before….Yes I would join y’all in a second.

  26. How funny! I can’t wait to see what treasures. Was it worth it? I think we will know tomorrow.

  27. What adventures you have Corey! I wish I could come out and play with you sometime.
Uh oh – sorry to hear the cornfield port-a-potties were a slap dash affair! 😉 I was glad to see that they were tall cornstalks though – I don’t know what’s the matter with my brain – you said cornstalks and I envisioned a glorious low meadow of waving lavender or something. With Corey doing what comes naturally. Duh. D’oh. duhr. My brain just doesn’t listen sometimes.
Can’t wait to see all the loot you two came home with!

  28. What fun!
    : )

ps I have a tip for you from my mama who commutes to work over a large mountain pass…year round. Take a 5 gallon bucket, line with a plastic bag..place a diaper in the bottom. Carry extra bag liners filled with disposable diapers….equals instant porta-potty in the privacy of your vehicle or, I guess, you could tote it around wherever need may be!!! Wa ha! : )

A down comforter instead of a crummy old sleeping bag? This is how I will travel from now on! I can already hear the conversation between my husband and me.
Was it really 25 MILES? However is one to choose when to come to France, during poppy season, for the lavendar fields, or at the end of August for the best brocante?

  30. christine

such a delightful, silly, fabulous time you had……

  31. ….I only wish I could tag along, Corey! Sounds like a slice of heaven!

  32. jend’isère

Such a pair you are…adding modern tales to your new treasures, which already posess stories.

  33. enjoyed the story very much. I would have love to come with you. I brocant ing for 25 years, I never heard of that place ! Strange isn’t it ?

  34. Linda Hanselman

Oh I am beside myself waiting to see what you bought!!! I am so jealous I wish I had a best friend to go brocanting with and sleeping in vans under down comforters and bathing in rivers and peeing in fields and cussing out the security guards and being blissful being covered in brocante dust! BTW I would have been the one cussing out the guards! That would be the french half that comes out every once in a while. ALSO if you and your Georgia friend need help going to the Marburger Fair in Houston I will gladly meet you AND I have NOTHING else better to do.

  35. You crack me up Corey! Glad you made it out alive!
    Take care,
    Martha

  36. can’t wait to see your treasures! what a fun adventure!

  37. Leilani Bennett

Peeing in cornfields! Being rousted by macho wanna-be cops! Finding fantastic “STUFF”! What an adventure! What a life!

  38. Corey, you’re an inspirational reminder of what we girls can do when we need/want to. You and Nathalie sent the message loud and clear “Don’t mess with us – we’re women on a mission.”

  39. You really lead an interesting life! I still have to ride a motorcycle or use a cornfield as a bathroom!

  40. Where is the sign up sheet? 🙂

  41. Katy in Fort Worth, Texas

You had me cracking up! Reminded me of when I was a child visiting my grandmother. At that time, they didn’t have indoor plumbing – the stories I could tell!

  42. Such fun! I love that you slept under such a nice comforter. I’m sure you both loved every moment. 🙂

  43. I loved hearing your story. Sounds like a great time to me. I would have stayed hidden too. I’m about as confrontational as you. I’d love to go with you and Nathalie.
    chris

    Oh Corey…
I have been on many antiquing fairs just like that. I must say, they are always the best, so much fun! Yes, after hearing your story, I want to go too.
Let’s plan a big group to come to France and go antiquing next year!
I am sure that my husband will not mind me flying across the Atlantic, to go antiquing, while he stays at home with the three kids. Nope, sure he wouldn’t mind a bit. So glad u had a good time and I can’t wait to see your treasures!

  45. Sounds like you two had fun!
I love the photo of you in your hat.
    ~elaine~

  46. Corey, Your so crazy!!! Ha!!

  47. I would have been hiding too. It would have been my sister being sassy like Nathalie. What another wonderful adventure! Can’t wait to see your goodies!

  48. gillian from the sweet indigo life~~~~

Brocant-ing is a fabulous Franglais word!!! Love it.
As for the frogs legs, I’d have to stick to a bucket of beer instead. 🙂
    xo
But that foot in the pic is so cute, is it yours!?
