French Antique Road Show

OH!

Summer was on a roll when I first met Lynn.

Lynn wrote that she was an antique dealer coming to France to buy for her shop, she asked me if we could meet for a coffee in Aix.

We hadn't even sat down at the cafe and I knew we were going to be fast friends. We spent the entire afternoon talking about those things that two women who love home, family, and antiquing could talk about, then we went shopping to a few of my favorite brocante hang outs.

Lynn bought and bought and bought… my favorite brocante hang out proved to be her lucky star, a bingo of lovely things for her shop in Georgia. As closing time approached the shop owner kept his shop opened as Lynn was far away from checking out. I stood in amazement as I watched one beauty after another being tagged for Georgia. I was envious of a shop I had never seen, from the looks of the antiques she bought I knew she had good taste, and a fortunate clientele. I wanted to hop in one of the boxes just to be able to go see.

French antiques

After dinner we said our goodbyes, Lynn promised to send me a photo of her shop when she got home…. Never did I expect that she would invite me to Georgia, then on to Texas to attend the fair at Marburger.

Shamefully, I had never heard of Marburger, or Warrenton, or Roundtop. I must be living under a rock, or somewhere far far away…. but then
again it explains why so many Antique dealers from Texas come to France scooping up French
antiques and roping them homeward bound.

Lynn filled me in with the details: Twice a year over miles on a back road in Texas a slew of small towns become a haven for antique dealers, interior designers, architects, antique buffs and a million other people searching for home decor treasures. It is consider the largest antique show in the U.S.A.

Towns with double digit populations explode to 30,000 overnight for a two week period every April and September. The first fairs open up in the fields in Warrenton and the last fair opens at the Grand-Daddy of them all at Roundtop. Lynn is setting up in the creme de la creme in Marburger.

Mirror fleur

Lynn has invited me to help her drive her truck loaded with antiques from Georgia to Texas (Which is really a joke since I fall asleep at the wheel, I guess I'll serenade her with my snoring.) then help her set up her stand, and be part of the things I love best…ANTIQUES!

Soooooooooooo, I am leaving this Tuesday for North Carolina first to visit my dear dear friends Ellen and Frank. Then I'll go to Savannah for a few days to help Lynn prepare for Texas, then we will drive to Texas, stay in Texas for about ten days (imagine the TEX MEX I am going to pig out on!!!!), during that time I will go to Austin to see Mari, a blogging friend who has asked me to speak at her shop about none less than Antiquing in France, and then (does it ever end…) fly to Willows for my Mother's birthday. How do I pack for all that?

I will be blogging at the home of my friends,

on the road with Lynn,

then Marburger fair,

Austin,

My childhood home… September 15th until October 14th.

French Husband and children are happy for me… I am taking suitcases of old stuff…(clothes are so overrated)… I'll be the girl with a skunk line and one black dress.

I am goofy with excitement.

SO Brother Mathew I will be blogging about Brocante Hell….and soon home to slug you for saying that!

(Lynn King's stand will be at Marburger Farms, Tent B, section 6. Lynn's stand is called: "The
Side Door". September 27th until the 3rd. We will be in Texas on
the 22nd to set up and check out the scene as well.)

I hope to see you somewhere along the line.

  9. What a whirlwind trip! You are going to love Savannah, it is so rich in beauty and history. It’s one of my favorite places to visit here in Georgia. You will be so close……
The good thing about bringing old things with you is that, when they are gone, you can bring new old things back to France! I think you are right- who needs clothes when you can haul stuff?
    I don’t think I need to wish you a wonderful trip. It’s a given.

  10. YeeeeHAAA!! Git along little doggies! Can’t wait to read all about it!

  20. That is fantastic! Congratulations. She couldn’t have picked a better person to ride shotgun for her. Have a blast.

  21. We definitely have to get you to La Bahia, our venue in Round Top (actually in Burton, just before). Do you know where you are staying? The best Mexican food place is in Somerville and there’s a good Italian place in Brenham.
We fly into Houston on Wednesday next week – we don’t drive the truck down this time (but we will drive it back, same road you’ll be one).
    See you there!

  22. Oh Corey that sounds amazing, you are going to have so much fun and be so exhausted on your feet (hopefully not at the wheel)…

I am now trying to figure out how I can go to Marburger! All of these exciting and wonderful things happen to you because of all the joy you put out into the world. Tell Lynn if she needs someone to help next year there’s a gal in Arizona just waiting.

  25. Wow! Make sure you have the camera battery fully charged and lots of photo cards at all times.

  26. Oh you will have the BEST TIME! Enjoy every second of it … and I agree, clothing is overrated!

  27. Oh, yay! And please don’t miss having an amazing slice of the best pie ever at Royer’s Cafe on the square in Round Top – just follow your nose! It’s no Laduree, but it’s Texas good!! Can’t wait to see you! You’re going to love it!

  31. Your antique road show is going to be so wonderful and so much fun. I can’t wait to see your photos and read your thoughts about Brocante done Texas style. Just thinking about it makes my garage sale this weekend sound so unromantic and un-chic.

  32. Another exciting trip? Have a wonderful time. I’ll be looking forward to reading the blogs that you post while your doing your thing.
    Carolyn

  33. Bon Voyage, Corey!

  34. P.S. I loved your statement that clothes are so over-rated. I agree with you 100%. I would be happy with a single outfit to wear every day if I could buy French antiques and bits of tattered and tarnished history to dress my home.

  35. Julie Ann Evins

Well another adventure to begin then Corey and for us to relish. Sorry I shall miss you in France however, Jx

  36. It does sound like fun, fun, fun. There is another antique extravaganza in Brimfield MA. Have you heard about that one? It sounds very similar to the Texas event. I have never been but it sound fabulous. Same MO. Small town explodes to half a million, three times a year, miles of booths. It is going on as I type. Maybe next year for you Corey.

  37. Looking forward to the day-by-day action that’ll happen!! I’ve been through those towns in Texas, but, I too didn’t have a clue about the fair. Can’t wait.

  38. Yea!,Yea!,Yea! I will see y’all there! I can’t wait. Your entire trip sounds fabulous but for me the best part about being in Marburger will be getting to meet you and seeing the goodies at the stand. Yipee!

  39. Have a fantastic trip Corey!

  40. Congratulations! What a wonderful trip and time you will have. Can’t wait to share the experience with you via your lovely blog.

Have fun! Kiss your Mom you lucky daughter!

  55. Lorretta from NH

  56. have fun in austin! if you get a chance, stop by shady grove on barton springs road. their veggie chili (without onions) is my favorite food on the planet. but all of their food is delicious.

  57. Have a safe journey. I cant wait to here about it! Enjoy being home in Willows!

  58. Be sure to where your Obama button in Texas!

  59. I am such a little idiot! Let’s try that post again: Be sure to WEAR your Obama button in Texas! That’s where.

  60. I’ve been hoarding…your blogs…like to save them up to savor like a new magazine. I’ve always wanted to go to the Roundtop/Marburger Antique show. I’m going to Brimfield on Friday. It is much like Roundtop. Field after field of fun treasures. My French neighbor found a fab. piece of old Quimper ware for only a few dollars. She was thrilled as obviously the dealer did not know what it was. If you come to Massachusetts you can stay with me and I will take you. You can bring FH and kids too. Brimfield happens each year in Sept. May and July.
I have an old jar filled with clay marbles from my grandparents. There are also two gallstones that I am told were also used as marbles. Have a wonderful time Corey.

  61. Oh you lucky duck!
    Have a fabulous time!

  62. You are going to have so much fun!
I can’t wait to share in your adventures through your blog.
    ~elaine~

  63. Oh Corey, I have wanted to write to you for a long time. I have been a faithful blog follower of yours and have enjoyed your journeys. I have laughed with you, cried with you, cheered with you, and experienced many of the same emotions and feelings.
I, too, will be in TEXAS (everything is bigger in TEXAS!) very soon. I won’t be able to attend Marburger, but I will be excited for you! I will be in Dallas to help plan my daughter’s wedding! I would drive to the antique fair just to meet you!You have become such a fun cyber-friend. If you ever come to Oregon, we will have to meet. Maybe you will come…….. if you build an Oregonian brocante site in one of the cow pastures, she will come! Have fun!

  64. Wow Corey what an adventurous journey is waiting there for you! 🙂 I’m happy for you too!
    xoxo Carola

  67. Kate Anderson

I’m jealous! I live in Texas and have never been to the Roundtop antiquing affairs. I love Austin, though. Have a blast! Maybe the Congress Ave.Bridge will still have some bats? I’m not sure when they leave.

  68. I know you will have a wonderful time! Wish I could make it over to meet you but the timing just doesn’t work out.
Can’t wait to hear your stories and see your pictures from Texas!

  69. Hi Corey, I’m Theresa with Garden Antqs Vintage blog and I understand there’s a good chance you may be attending my blog party on Sunday the 27th? This is really exciting as I have followed your blog for some time. I’m so looking forward to meeting you. Have a safe trip.
