“Back Home” with Mari, in Austin Texas

mari

Mari Johnson invited me to Austin to speak at her Back Home Store.

I never met Mari before, nor did I know anything about her, except that she seemed like a kindred spirit from the email she sent me. Last Friday evening Mari drove to Marburger, and at the end of the day I hopped in her car and drove with her to Austin.

An hour and a half later we were fast friends, it was as if we had been separated at birth and found each other… we could not stop talking.

Then I asked her the serious question to my purpose of being with her, "What am I to talk about and what is your shop like?"

I usually jump and ask questions after wards.. miraculously, ninety four percent of the time it works out better than if I had planned it.

Mari had me stay overnight in her lovely home, the next morning I woke up to a homemade Tex-Mex breakfast… Mari knew that I craved Tex Mex food. How many strangers do you take home, and feed them their heart's desire? It was renewing to find someone like Mari…

Open heart generosity.

Mari has been in the home furnishing business for twenty nine years, most of the people working for her have been with her nearly as long. Her business feels more like a family and her shops are more like a well loved home. Mari offers affordable, hand picked reproduction furnishing with an French antique flair. If you enjoy French Home style you might want to take a peek into Mari's Back Home shops in Austin.

Mari invited her customers to come and meet me share about living in France… It dawned on me that she was serious when I saw people gathering in her shop…. The reality struck me, –Oh I am going to talk, not just gawk at all the pretty things in her shop, not just hang out with Mari and eat Tex Mex…. Oh I am actually here to share something about France– When Mari introduced me panic settled nicely under my skin. The first words out of my mouth were:

" Mari, I cannot talk I have gum in my mouth."

Mari handed me her business card for me to stick my gum on… and I took the gum from my mouth and stuck it on the back side of the business card. The moment I did so, in front of the group of people gathered there, I thought is this really happening? How I wished I had said nothing and swallowed my gum instead.

Surprisingly I didn't embarrass myself much after the gum incident.

Mari who has a love affair with France has been there over twenty times, I followed her lead in the conversation, answering questions from my perspective on everything from… Are the French rude? Where are some of the best places to stay? How to ship purchases home? Secret places of beauty?…

Thank you Mari for showing me your world, for inviting me into your home and most importantly for showing me that I too have a love affair with France…. a place that took me so long to adapt to, a place that I willingly after all these years abroad call home.

Note:

This Thursday from 6pm to 8pm I will be in Chico, California at NANTUCKET sharing about Living in France. I hope you can join me…. I promise not to be chewing gum.

And after how many days did you finally eat TexMex?

  5. I forgot !!! i’m wondering how all these american antiques dealer look beautiful , they look like stars from Hollywood even after setting up stands …
How come I don’t look like that when I’m working !!

  6. WOW this is becoming an adventure like no others before! And maybe a new career as a public orator is coming…..

  7. Can you believe it Corey? You are an international super star!!!
Have fun at Nantucket, I’ve always loved that place (Ihaven’t been to the new location yet) Rick and Nan are so nice.
    Enjoy home.

  8. Darn! Chico is just a bit too far for me to attend Thursday night. (I live near San Rafael). Have a great evening at Nantucket and welcome home to CA!

  9. Oh Corey,
My cheeks are tear stained… here come more tears… please pardon type-os because I can’t see the keys very well. What can I say to such a lovely entry other than thank you? Thank you for the generous heart that is more pure and beautiful in person than I could have ever imagined. You are a gift to us all who long for that special someone to ground them and remind them during these stressful times, what is truly important in life… friendship, family and love. You bring us that each day, thank you Corey.
I want to share with you all (y’all) that Corey chooses everyday to write about beauty because that is what she chooses to draw into her life. Her words have impacted me as I go about my daily stresses, what do I choose to draw for this moment? There is beauty if I choose to draw it into my life. There are many other Corey-isms which have stayed with me. Corey, you are a gift to us all and I cherish you and our time together. May there be much more.
    Love, mari

  10. Dear Corey,
In addition to everything about “Tongue in Cheek” that is personal, I think that your blog demonstrates dramatically and repeatedly exactly what a motivated, energetic, non-judgmental, caring, individual with a particular passion and an, at times, self-deprecating sense of humor can do with her/his life via a blog and its intersection with life-at-large.
It is fun to see and experience vicariously what you do with your blog, but it is also an object lesson in what potential there is to be found in and what anyone else could do with her/his own particular passions, life, and blog.
I am not at all a fan of “stuff” but I am a fan of your use of “stuff” as a vehicle for self-expression, self-discovery, and an entrée into the lives of others. I am in awe of what you have created and I salute you on all your hardwork and the fruits of your labor.
    Amitiés,

  11. Wonderful post, Corey.
Mari has great taste – I love that chandelier in the first picture.
“Are the French rude?” I am always perplexed by this question. I have never been treated badly in France.

  12. Mari’s store is lovely and so is Mari. Thank you for sharing your visit and now I think I have to go “Back Home” and check it out myself.

  13. Corey, your posts and your blog are such an inspiration to me, I feel like I know you because that is the beautiful friendship aura you present in your posts. It is heartwarming and inviting and makes one feel right at home. What a lovely friend is Mari is and how nice of you to share your stories with everyone. I don’t know about others but I definitely live vicariously “in France” through your stories and wonderful photos you share on your blog.
    Thank you!
    Margaret B

  14. Yes. Much love.

  15. it continues to amaze me how people have been opening their homes and hearts on your trek to Texas. but then, my home would be open should you come to my part of the world. your trip has been so wonderful.
    thanks for sharing.

  16. Wow, I feel so design/space restricted compared to you and the lovely people you write about. Mari’s store looks fabulous and her comments about you are perfect.

  17. I chew gum, too. Some might say it is not appropriate for a 72-year old to do so. I remember reading tht some airline or other used to require their stewardesses (this was the 50s) to chew two sticks of gum every night to keep their jawlines taut! Sorry to report it hasn’t done much for mine. LOL

  18. Dear Corey
I am thinking about flying from LA to Chico on Thursday to hear you speak and most of all to meet YOU…I can’t miss this opportunity to meet someone so special to me. I am going to check Southwest airlines now for a ticket…
    Love, Ladelle

  19. Oh, I wish I could be in my hometown – Chico – to hear you speak!! But Montana is just so far away! Have a wonderful time at home. Jamie V

  21. Chico! I used to live nearby Chico but now I live in North Idaho! Oh rats….. Blessings, Kimberly

  22. See Corey, this is why you need your book! You have already started the tour. Backwards is yourstyle though and we love you for it!!! I am going to try and make it to Chico on Thursday-How Exciting!

  23. Nantucket! I was ready to jump on the ferry to meet you. But alas…it’s a shop in California and not the island. Maybe next time you’ll do the east coast and Brimfield?
Have a wonderful time in Willows with your family.

  24. So I hear my best friend “Brother Mathew” pulled one of his usual stunts? Actually he told me himself. Next time I’ll come get you. Daisy can’t wait to see you!

  25. Elaine L.

Oh, how I wish I were retired and I would drive to Chico to meet you.
Corey, you are a celebrity. Write a book about France with your pictures. It would sell. Just think how much fun the book tour would be.
    ~elaine~

  26. Your book is written already. It just needs to be translated into French.

I am so disappointed that I did not get to see you in Austin. I kept checking the Back Home Store website but there was only a tease about you coming and nothing definite.
I am glad you had a good time in Texas. Maybe next time.

Love all the detail in your beautiful photos! If ever visiting Europe, Prague will be on my list!!!!!!
