The Last Night Home

My last night home was spent at my brother Zane's and sister in law Joy's home. We celebrated my mother's birthday. Joy prepared the dinner in her new kitchen.

My cousin Gene and Kathy came over too, I helped them prepare for their trip to Europe next Spring. I love when I know someone in my family is coming over to visit, it makes saying goodbye a bit easier.

pumpkin cakes

Zane and Joy are the parents to Molly and Warren.

Joy made double pumpkin cakes and put them on pedestals for my mother's birthday. I thought that was very clever, and I am going to copy that idea.

This is Warren (named after Joy's father) he is the youngest in our family. The last time I saw him he wasn't talking… but boy does he talk now! He wanted to show me his bedroom, so he grabbed my hand and lead me to his sister Molly's bedroom. When we went inside I asked him if he was sure this was his bedroom. Warren reassured me that this was indeed his room.
"Warren, your room sure looks like Molly's… it is very pink!"
"Aunt Coco, this IS my room and it is very pretty."

While we played with Molly's miniature doll house Warren told me that the bedroom next door (his room) was dark and that he liked this pretty room best.

I was and still am afraid of the dark. I hugged Warren and said, "…we could turn a light on in that room next door…."

My brother Mathew re-designed Zane and Joy's house. It use to be my Uncle Phil's and Aunt Sara's home (Franca Bolla's and Sheba's childhood home).
I love the fresh twist my brother Mathew created for them.

A kitchen is meant for gatherings.

Here are a few more of my nephews… Sam, Joe and my Godchild George (named after my father.)
Sacha spent many long summer days with these guys. A year ago they tried to build a raft to float down the canal. After it sunk over and over again, they abandoned the project and swam instead.

family

My Mother is
the center,

the rock,

the faith point,

The cookie maker,

we love her
and she brings us together…

Patti, the young woman on the left, is the oldest grandchild in the family. She brought her boyfriend along. He fit right in with his plaid shirt, wrangler jeans, and baseball cap.

Patti turned 20 this August. Chelsea will turn 20 in December… when I see Warren (the youngest grandchild) who is two, I am reminded how fast time goes by. Chelsea and Patti met the first time I went home with a baby in tow, Chelsea was five months old.

Since then I admire ANYONE who travels with a baby on a plane. Though I am SO GLAD those days are over for me… what a work out traveling with a baby on a plane can be.

Sam, brother Mathew, Diane, Godchild George, a tip of Molly and my brother Mark.

I have four brothers, and four amazing sister in laws.
-Marty and Suzy, have three children Patti, Andy and Jack.
-Mathew and Shelley, have three children too, Sam, Joe and Marie.
-Mark and Diane, they have four children, Gina, Maci, George and Kate.
-and my youngest brother Zane and Joy, they have two children, Molly and Warren.

I am the oldest and the only girl in the family.

My Mom, Marie, Marty, Joe, Sam and Mathew.

Joy and Warren.

My oldest brother Marty. My sister in law Suzy and the boys were not able to make it, Andy had the flu!
I hope he is better by now?

Marty often writes comments for my brother Mathew.

Maci, Kate covering her ears and Warren hiding…though I do not remember why? Maybe my brother Mathew was giving a lecture or something.

Warren looks exactly like my brother Zane when he was little. I remember well because I was fourteen when Zane was born.

This is Marie, I call her Ree, she learned how to read by herself when she was something like three or four. Ree and Gina keep me posted by sending me emails.

Once Gina wrote to me:

"Dear Aunt Coco,
George was riding his motorcycle
and fell into the canal.
Love, Gina"

This is Molly, the other day my sister in law Shelley's parents celebrated their 50th wedding aniversay. My entire family was invited. We also all helped with setting up, cooking, serving and clean up, it is an Amaro thing, it is one of my favorite things about my family too. Anyway, I told Molly, who LOVES chocolate, that on each of the party tables there was going to be chocolate candies, and she should bring a purse so she could take home some chocolates home after the party. Molly grinned ear to ear and said,
"I'll bring a grocery bag."

Home. Happy. Good and Full.

  5. Corey,
You had a wondeful trip didn’t you? Your family looks like a lot of fun, and I love that pumpkin cake idea.
As for small children on planes – once when I flew New York to Phoenix, there were 2 kids who decided screaming at the top of their lungs for an extended period would be good fun. The parents could not stop them. So the crew served free drinks all around.
I hope you flight home is peaceful and goes quickly. And may your luggage arrive when you do. 🙂

  6. I love the kitchen (especially the big globe lights over the island) and I am TOTALLY in love with Warren! 🙂

  7. Absolutely wonderful warmth came from this blog. Nice to meet your family. Are you the baby? Have to read this again to see if I missed that because I have 4 sons and a girl.
She’s 12 now and looks up to her older brothers. Bon Appetit!

  8. The kitchen is gorgeous and that is evident even in the sepia tones. That group looks like a cozy loving bunch. And now you have spread that same love and character with us and France. Thanks for the look in and the sweet inspiration. Have a good trip back to your family’s loving arms.

  9. Corey, you have a wonderful family!!! Makes me miss home… As one of six siblings, my family gatherings are similar to yours!!! Lots of nephews and nieces, tons of fun and the most awesome food in the world!

  10. This was great to read and I loved the pictures.
My family is coming to visit today and will be traveling 5 hours to come to Jessica’s 8th birthday. I miss them and can’t wait to see them. I’ll be seeing my 4 month old nephew for only the 2nd time since he was born. The kids are excited to meet him for the first time.
Oh, and Jessica wants a “Paris room”. I’m having enlarged prints made of the pictures I took of the Eiffel tower when you and I went together. And then I’ll add some other Parisian touches.
    I miss you!

I’m not usually interested when bloggers talk about their families but yours is different. We’ve followed your pain and your joy over the years and you feel like family, your family is like our family. Above all it is so wonderful to see the celebration of family, of different generations. It’s just wonderful…

  12. One can live on another continent or across the country and still find such gatherings bittersweet because the rest of the year one misses the rest of the family gatherings. But it is so good to have family as a touchstone about things that matter.

  13. Wonderful blog today. Great family.

  14. Hello Corey, it´s such a pleasure being here at your wonderful blog once again, enjoying your great posts… you were my first inspiration in this blogging world. Once you visit my blog, would love if you do it again and enjoy springtime in my garden, here in Chile.
    Big hugs to you

Thank you for explaining the glass thingys for flowers – for once that had been my guess. What a pity it was not one of your competitions ! With love Jxx

  16. Seeing your family gathering gave me the warm and fuzzies this morning. Especially the photo of your Mom with everyone. I love the way Molly thinks!

  17. Hi Corey, It was so nice to have you home and hear your family stories, and even meet a few of them too. I feel like I am saying goodbye to Willows for a while as well. I feel a little homesick…Just know we are always here in Ca for you!!!

  18. I LOVE Zane and Joy’s kitchen! Will you be home next summer? Will you give me a tour?
I am so happy your trip has been so special. Hope everyone recovers from the flu.
    Safe travels home. XOXOXO

  19. Hi Corey,
I’ve enjoyed reading about your visit home. I especially enjoyed your posting about your father and the pic of his closet. I lost my father, a.k.a my best friend two years ago this month and when I saw your picture of his shirts it was confirmation to me that I’m not the only one. I wondered into my parents’ closet a couple of months ago and stopped at my dads suit jackets. He loved to dress up for church and always smelled so good, a mix between Armani cologne and Doublemint gum, which he carried in his shirt pocket at all times. A habit not missed by the youngest of his offspring down to the wee little great-grandchildren. I self-conciously buried my face into one of his favorite jackets in hopes that I could smell that familiar and oh so comforting scent.
Thank you Corey for your posts! Have a safe journey home.

  20. Safe travels back home, Corey. I too find that as the years have gone by, those gathering times with siblings and families are so precious. World travelling in my 20’s, settling in another hemisphere with my AH, now leavings are so hard……but, yay for skype!!! Keep creating joy in everything you do 🙂

  21. Home here, home there – each pulls you in different directions.
How wonderful to have love spread over the world like you do.

  22. I loved your post! It was a fun night! I miss you! Thanks for forgiving my daddy.

Really beautiful photos and family. I’d like to hug Warren and never let him go.

  24. I LOVE this post. My family is very dear to me also and although we are spread out all over the country I feel close to them remembering all the fun times we have had. Just a beautiful post all around. Thanks for blessing me with a reminder of how special my family is. Blessings and safe travels, Kimberly

  25. I almost felt like I was there…good post

  26. I can’t let pass the opportunity to give a shout out to Phil Cuccia. He built the house that now holds Zane, Joy, Molly and Warren within its wall. I remember him digging the foundation by hand, through the clay pan soil during the dog days of summer. A man with a mission. And now, I don’t think there’s anyone happier than he to see another family being raised in that house, making it their own and tending to it with the same devotion he did.
One of these days, when heading home to San Francisco, instead of driving off the road to catch a glimpse of the old homestead, I’ll stop in and ask for a tour. Some day … not yet, though.

  27. Loved the blog. What a beautiful family, kudos to your mom. I’ll have to stop by and look at Willows one of these days, I still think of it fifty years ago as a hot, windy place that I loved because my cousins lived there. By the way the drag racing scene out of that James Dean movie could have been Willows!
I look forward to your re-entry blog back into France.

  29. I love Ginas ability to tell stories in so few words.
It would have taken me three pages!

Reading your post today — sent me into the kitchen and I baked ‘apple spiced bread’,,,even though my boys are young men now but still home back and forth to school-work — your post celebrating family sent that message to enjoy and savory each moment while we are still able to get together, for it is all too brief- like you I do not wish to travel with babies again, but still loved the ride..

  32. Beautiful pictures of your spectacular family and a wonderful celebration for your mother,
    Corey!
So glad that Gene and Kathy will be visiting you before you know it!
I’m thinking of you as you wing your way across the continents and water back to your other home.

  33. Most beautiful photos and family! Oh those dark velvet eyes of Warren – he has taken my heart completely!

  34. Corey,

  35. Your parents did the most important job on earth, parenting, spectacularly well! Happy birthday to your Mother.

  36. Wonderful! I agree about flying with babies. My family recently went to Hawaii with my 16 month old and it was definitely a workout. Everytime I fly now I think I’m going to high five every parent on the flight.
I love those 3 bulb lights over that kitchen island. What a great family you have.

The most lovely thing I can remember about my family, is to be all together, adule and children, on friday nights at my grandparents home, playing some cards game, the fire on, chatting and laughing the long winter away. I treasure these memories so very much inside my heart, with the memories of people long gone now.

  50. what beautiful photos and comments. Congratulations on a perfect life – a happy, big family. Life has so many ups and downs and having a happy family helps us survive and surpass all the horrible downs.
Also LOVE that the photos are in black and white – very elegant and timeless.
