The Angel with a Boxing Glove

my son when he was a little boy

Yesterday after noon I went to pick up my French niece and nephew. A smaller child maybe three years old came up to me in the playground. He pulled at my hand, and said in sweet baby French, "Your boy, that boy," the small child pointed to my nephew, "He, he, he poked me in my eye and then this eye too! And and and, " he stammered, "…then he poked my nose and put his finger in my nose! And he poked my belly… like this…" the little round face boy punched himself, "…and and and it hurt me, and I cried." As I reached down to say I was sorry, his mother came up to me. Oh la la. I became her punching bag. I took her worried, angry, verbal upset, one word at a time. My nephew hid behind my back.

I wanted to say, "I am not his mother."

I wanted to say, "I do not speak French, or I do not understand French ask my niece!"

I wanted to pull my nephew by his ear and put him in the center of the ring.

Instead I said, I was sorry, over and over again. I made my nephew say he was sorry too.

Then we walked home holding hands in silent. When we got home I decided we would have cereal, apples and cheese for dinner… and if they wanted cookies and milk that was fine with me. I did not have the heart to enter into a battle zone.

I went in my nephew's room he had one red boxing glove on his hand and it was above his head.

Knocked out. Sound asleep looking like a sweet angel. I shook my head in disbelief.

Three days down, two more to go.

Photo: Somehow my photo card has disappeared. I do not wonder, I know who has it.
The photo is one of my son when he was a little boy… eating cereal.

Wow – that was international language Corey ! Just caught up on 3 days with the French children and really enjoyed it. Thanks to you I now have a list of 6 foods on the fridge (6 was as many as we could get…). Takes the pressure off though for sure, wise advice from my special friend ! Luv Jx

  3. Corey,
thanks for sharing even the hard things… it is good to know you are perfect and inhuman, sorry scrap that (I’m a bit dyslexic)- I mean imperfect and human, perhaps like the woman in the park, your knocked-out nephew and all the rest of us too, all we can do is our best.
You’re very kind to look after these little people, don’t worry if its not a smooth ride.
Beauty hides in the strangest of places.

  4. I am so enjoying your nephew’s visit!

What a wonderful way of handling it. She got to be heard! I know you wanted to do something different, but you didn’t. Bravo for you!

Corey, hang in there. I know what it’s like. My grandchildren are 11 years old (girl) and 3 years old (boy). My granddaughter is sweet and fun for me to be with. We love going to lunch, the book store, the coffee shop in town (she has hot chocolate) and antique store browsing. She’s a little mini me.
Then there’s my grandson. I love him with all my heart-really, I do. However,he wants to wrestle, stomp around and play on the floor with trains. I don’t do any of that. Thank goodness for grandpa.
I wouldn’t give up my time with either one though and they’re here several times a week. Just remember to breathe. ;o)

  7. Much love and many blessings
    Love Jeanne

    Dear Corey,
I believe you are the angel wearing that boxing glove..Your French nephew is a reflection of you! He probally wasn’t even doing anything wrong and was trying to make that little boy laugh… he got accused, just like the French mother accused you. I think those two have some French issues..
Not you and not French nephew! You sweet sweet thing! Hang in there.
    xx’s

  10. I thought that little boy looked like Sacha! Oh my, quite the nephew you have there. Like Vicki said “boys will be boys no matter what language they speak”.

  11. Oh no! You are having quite the interesting time of it Auntie Corey, aren’t you?! My gosh, you deserve a gold star, you are grace itself! Sending you lots and lots of hugs for the remaining two days. Our Miss Sister Coco can do it, if anybody can!

I wouldn’t give them the things they like to eat. They might beg their mother to ask you to babysit more often.
I can hardly wait to get back to the love story that this babysitting incident interrupted.

Oh little boys on the playground– world around– I am sure there is more to the story between the two little “dear ones” in trying to work out their differences…. You handled it well– I think I would like re-acted the same. apology instead of making it into confrontation- or placing your dear one in center stage situation where it would have not been a pleasant memory of you or the situation
    You handled it with compassion..

Consider these days as “practice” for grandchildren in the future….way in the future!

Deep breaths Ms Corey. I thought the picture was of your nephew and the first thing I thought was that he looked like Sascha…..funny when I read your caption. Good luck with the last days of your baby sitting.

  16. Oh my…you’re a very patient aunt!
I’m so enjoying you having little ones around…

My oh my… it sounds like you’re having quite an adventure with your niece and nephew. They sound like quite the characters… I wonder what they are like at home with mom!?! Hang in there!

    Love the comments…
    And I can’t think of a thing to say…
    Except I am smiling.

  19. Oh, my! He is quite a little stinker. Some day he may meet a little boy who will punch him back. It would be interesting to see what he thinks about that.

  20. and you thought taking a trip with fh on the back of ‘willow’ was an adventure! (has french nephew seen ‘willow’ yet ?or your cool black helmet?)
there is no way you will not be at the top of the compliment list when maman et papa return.
you already raised two lovely humans… you got mad skills in this area. no further proof is required.
