Shelley’s Christmas

The power of blogging. Four years ago when I started to blog I told my childhood friend Shelley (who has A.L.S.) that I had a new discovery for her that she was going to love. Because of her illness Shelley is completely paralyzed yet can move one finger…. enough to use it on the mouse pad. Each and everyday her husband, Eric baths, feeds and dresses Shelley sits her in the living room and before he leaves for work he places her hand on the mouse pad… Shelley surfs the world of blogs.

If a blog has to do with home decoration, country design, mixed media, crafts, children/family, the joy of life, color, hope, faith– Shelley knows it. Her blog roll is a couple of miles long.

Blogging, or in Shelley's case surfing the net is something that opens the world to her– It takes the expression, "The World at your Fingertips" have new meaning. Shelley finds inspiration, creative energy, laughter and all her Christmas gifts online.

Shelley cannot type, leaving a comment is impossible… yet everyday she checks on her blog roll and is inspired.

The last time I was home (October) Shelley was preparing for Christmas. She had sourced supplies through the net and her husband Eric was putting her ideas to form. Eric is Shelley's hands: He sized a frame under her guidance, painted it cranberry red from a color chip she found online, arranged and re arranged the small trinkets (she had found on ETSY) the way Shelley wanted them onto the painted backboard, and then sealed them together onto the frame.

Their love is enviable!

…to think Shelley was preparing for Christmas in October and mine is
still under the stairwell. The luxury of time, and an able body does
not mean things get done faster or better, the bottom line is one has
to have passion to live the life you want.

I am going to put up our Christmas tree, really I am..

The picture frame says: Merry Christmas, Santa's Toys, December 25. Each and every trinket she found online.

Just because Shelley's body stopped moving does not mean that her energy stopped. Shelley lives her passion for family, traditions, decorating and creating by adapting herself to what she can do and not focusing on what she cannot do.

I am sure Shelley would tell me to get my rear in fast gear…. or maybe she would tell me to have Christmas under the stairs!

ps My Christmas closet is still packed to the gills..my tree is finally up, but only a silhouette in the room as it waits for light and baubles. Even so, I am truly thankful that The Reason for the Season does not come in a box! : )

  3. Hi Corey,
I am so glad that you introduced Shelley to us on your blog. I think of her often and marvel at her zest for life and unwavering determination to live her life to the fullest with such joy. Knowing of Shelley and her situation makes me want to start reaching for the life I want. Maybe my first goal should be finding a good man. Shelley is a fortunate woman to have so many loving people in her life! Merry Christmas!

  4. Corey, this is such a wonderful tribute to your friend Shelley!
Ever since I first read about your friend her, online, in Bloglandia as they call it, I have closed her in my heart too. She has taught me more than she will ever know. Shelley, if you read this, I wish you the most wonderful Christmas time ever, may joy be in your heart and your load light. Hugs, Merisi

  5. A lovely tribute to your wonderful friend.
I know what your friend is going through and that her energy is still there and the brain is able to think. Shelly is an inspiration and as Laura says we really should count are blessings and stop moaning about the tiny things that irritate us.
In America you call this awful disease ALS and in the uk we call it MND….I used to work for the Head Office in Northampton, in the Fundraising department and I still have very good friends there… Who are doing their utmost everyday to raise money, for carers , equipment, and scientists who are searching for a cure.
And the only reason I am not still working there is I moved out of the area, bit far to commute.

  6. Hi Shelley! Hope you have a wonderful Xmas….and you too Corey, even if it IS under the stairs!!! (Wow I would love to see your bloglist recommendations Shelley – what a wealth of knowledge you must have)
PS My exhibition opens tomorrow! Can you wish me luck please? It is a very big show for me. Want to check it out? http://yarraart.blogspot.com (I think I already told you Shelley)

I keep you in mind Shelley because my brother has ALS and I’ll see him in a couple of days for the first time in over a year. He’s in a wheelchair now. Now about Christmas trees, mine is now in the stand and I’m heading to put the lights on. I think you and I are both running a “leetle” behind schedule. Unfortunately, I don’t have your lovely reasons. And so, dear Corey, here’s to us both getting our trees up in the next twenty-four hours. Deal?

That’s one of the all time most beautiful things I’ve ever heard. Bless you both.

  40. Marry Christmas and best wishes to Shelley and Corey!
On a practical note…. RE difficulty typing…. Shelley, have you tried an “”On-Screen Keyboard”? You can type on it by clicking buttons with your mouse.
It’s available on Windows comp, if you are using one, but I am sure Macs have something similar…
“On-Screen Keyboard is an accessibility utility that displays a virtual keyboard on the computer screen that allows people with mobility impairments to type data by using a pointing device or joystick.”
    more info here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/oskturnonuse.mspx
We would live to see a short message from you, Shelley!

What a wonderful story of love and devotion.
I just came home from a Christmas party at my next door neighbor’s house (in Sacramento). I met a man from Willows. When I told him I read your blog daily, he told me to say “Hi” from Randy and Renee Garner’s son Ryan. Small world, or maybe it’s just that everybody on the planet knows you.
