Shine On

Shine-on

What light! If you haven't read the comment section yesterday and you need a reason to be encouraged, then please go read them. Inspiring! Each comment is a blog post in itself. Such wonderful, moving, encouraging comments about seeing the bright side of life…even in darkness.

Thank you for your comments, thank you for sharing about yourself on my blog. Thank you for being an active part of Tongue in Cheek. Your vital, thoughtful, in-depth, generous and encouraging comments yesterday (and every day for that matter) makes me feel that I am not writing this blog alone.

Candle-light

Many of you read the comments every day… which gives me a sense of community, and inspiration. Thank you!

Yesterday I went to see Aviator (Incredible visuals!), as I walked up to the door a young boy (15, 16ish) stepped back, holding the door open for me while his friends laughed and teased him. He said, "Hey, it is normal, why are you guys laughing, it is what you do man for one another."

When it was my turn to pay, I paid for my place and bought another ticket for the young man. When I gave it to him (he refused it at first, but I had already bought it so he had no choice to accept it) and told him that his gesture was appreciated, and thank you. I guess I am saying that when we see light we should add wood to that fire. We need to encourage and uplift one another. Help one another to shine.

Beeswax-candles

Thank you for helping me shine, for encouraging me by following my blog and sharing your stories and heart with me.

I wish I could send candles to everyone who wrote a comment yesterday. It is tough to pick a winner.

shine on sharing light

Each comment shines. Comments that share heart and soul:

"Dancing on a plywood floor… Freshly baked bread… Playing the harp… Sitting by a roaring fire… Having sex in the morning… Being able to accept imperfections… The words "Full remission"… Creating… Juicy, vibrant, delicious colors… Helping someone I don't know… Riding one's bike… Staying in pajamas with a cup of coffee… Reading a good book while lying in the bath!… Smiling at strangers and getting a reply…The smell of the desert after it rains…Looking at the laugh lines on people's faces, they tell a story... Collecting sea glass washed up on the shore… Making cakes…they all have a story to tell.
A life of noticing and absorbing beauty and inspiration… and the comments and light shine on and on!"

Lighting-the-way

But since I must pick someone…

Winners:

carbide lamp

Carbide lamp showing flame and reflector. Marlis found this site with the image I was looking for. The candle fits in on its side.

Marlis was the first to show an image of a car lantern with a candle.

and

Carol Boartright:

I shine in my handling of my 9 year old twins with severe autism. My girls are non-verbal, not potty-trained and are unable to dress themselves. Each day is quite the struggle, as the physical and mental toll on our family is amazing. Now, I must say, most of the time. I don't feel like I shine at all. But friends have told me that they are amazed by my humor in all this, how I persist through all the challenges. I try to squeeze a little fun, beauty and laughter in each day, but really what I do, I do with the grace of God. 'Cause I sure couldn't do it by myself!"

Thank you!!

Shine on!

I didn’t have time to respond thoughtfully to the candles…maybe I did, but just not in the form of a comment to this corey community. I was at my mom’s to do the weekly grocery shopping-med sorting-laundry doing-checkbook balancing and general handy man chores I do for her as her primary caregiver. On Tuesday afternoon, after two different doctors’ appts. I put 20 polka dot candles on a store-bought cake and sang an acappella “happy birthday” to her. As she was off to bed a few hours later, she stuck her head into the room where I was watching TV and thanked me for “making it easy” for her. In this second year since losing her mate of 60 years (she was married the day after she turned 21), she was grateful to have a reason to celebrate and glad to not have to blow out 83 candles. That little sad ceremony of just the two of us – was worth the effort. And I thought about what it means to shine…

  5. I cannot help but think maybe that is why they teach all the children that cute song,
“This little light of mine” in church. Words to live by my friends.

    You are so right.
The comments from yesterday could be an inspirational book.
Gifting someone of something that I made and having them smile……my answer.

How wonderful to read all the comments. We buried my 93 yr. old mother yesterday. It was sad, but also joyful at the same time. It was a homecoming for her. She was there for my first breath and I was able to be there for her last. Keep up the wonderful blog, Corey!

Oh Corey, you give us all candles every single day and we are all better for it – for you.

  9. Hi. Wonderful comments.
About the candles and car headlights… I looked high and low for an internet photo of an early car with candles in some sort of headlight or lantern and haven’t found one yet. I was glad to see the linked article but there isn’t a candle to be found there. Do you have a picture of a car headlight/lantern with a candle that you could post? I’m just curious to see one…. Thanks for your blog!
