A French Dog named Babette

Green-shutter

This is the almond green shutter from the bedroom window where we stayed this weekend.
My friend Lisa invited Ladelle and I to come stay with her and go to the Brocante nearby.
How could we say no to: Lisa's cooking, her beautiful home, to be in the heart of Provence and the brocante?

I knew it was going to be love… but I didn't expect to fall in love with…

Langes

This was the view. It beats looking out into my neighbor's courtyard. When I opened the shutter and saw this I called French Husband and said, "Honey I am not coming home."

Love bite me hard…but this wasn't the main attraction to my love affair.

View-of-provence

Outside the kitchen door was dreamy too. I felt like I was going to O.D on provencal beauty.

"Lisa," I said, "I don't like you. I really don't."

Though after she told me she takes care of the yard by herself I felt a little better…

Until I met….

Garden

Outside the living room there is a small terrace. The green monster tried to jump inside of me…But before it could Lisa said we were going to have lunch later on the terrace.
Food has a way of making everything better.

Friendship, food, provence, green shutters…. ah love take me here I am!

Lisa1

Lisa sets the table.

Lunch-on-the-terrace

Yes, the bottle of wine is nearly empty. I don't know how that happened.

(Ladelle's photo)

Maybe because we started to have lunch inside?

Three-red-pepper

Salad with beets, corn and hard boiled eggs, white wine and three pepper and tomato quiche. On Rose Willow plates.

Outside, under the blue sky, lunch on Rose Willow plates…. it was what my dreams are made of…. but what I didn't expect was what really set my heart on fire.

Corey4

It was a lovely lunch, in every way…. but this is what was the icing on the cake:

Babette

Babette.

Lisa's dog.

All my life I have been terrified of dogs. Cannot even be in the same room with a dog.

The love affair started with Babette… and nothing now is the same.

Babette woke me up by jumping on my bed! I am in love with a dog, no no no with Babette.

Oh that Babette. How can i steal her? Lisa, Lisa, LISA I want your dog!

Isn't she the cutest thing ever?

  1. Got to agree with you Corey – Babette is truly a dog to fall in love with. Look at that face – so cute. Lovely area you are in too and that home and the views – divine. Enjoy your stay.
PS I never know how a bottle of wine empties either…vbg.

  2. Mmmm….3 pepper and tomato quiche, those happy plates and plaid curtains in the kitchen…the food…the fellowship…your photos!!! I’m packing my bags! And yes, Babette looks like a real doll!

    Babette deserves a brocante bowl.

  5. What a wonderful place to be!! I am happy so happy for you experiencing this delightful weekend Corey! Oh I am so going to France soon, you are testing my patience with all these lovely pics. Just the thought of eating lunch outside now, lovely.. Here it is still very much winter with super-high peaks of snow every where I look.
Have a fresh new start on this new week!

Looks like like you had a fab time in a fab place but I am more than happy about your love affair with Babette. I’ve always loved animals, lived with animals and could not live without their company, their unconditional love , their joy of living, their mischiefs, their warmth, their intelligence…Good for you ! Hope the next step for you will be : choose a dog for Corey !
    Bonne journΓ©e !

I am so jealous! Wish I had that view to look at every day!!!!! Babette is adorable.

  8. I could sit on that terrace for a very long time!!! Wow what a view, lunch and Babette is pretty cute too!!! Did anyone ever tell you life is not fair!!

  9. OH, what a beautiful countryside. And the food!
The dog is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, known for their wonderful temperment and adorable face. A worthy choice if you were to become a dog owner, especially given your past fear of dogs. You’de be surprised at the joy they bring into your life. Well, you’ve found that out already.

  10. I am so jealous! How lucky to have such wonderful friends who live in such wonderful places with an adorable dog to top it off. The next time Lisa invites you, please take me.

  11. So lovely, all of it, just beautiful. My Aunt Jody has a Cavalier King Charles just like Babette. Now, i want one.

  12. Oh no! Look what happened? The green monster escaped on the internet highway and has inhabited the soul of reader in the environs of the Windy City. The house, Babette, the view, the terrace, oh my, the terrace.
Is that little door to an oven in the terrace wall?

  13. Oh-oh-oh!!! I have a dog JUST LIKE HER. I remember a few years back you commented on my blog that you didn’t really like dogs and I thought “I’ll bet she’d like Pickles” — And I was right. My dog, Pickles, is a tri-color cavalier who looks just like Babette. And she is adorable. Sweet, loving, calm. She looks at me with those pleading, loving eyes and I adore her. I’m glad you met Babette.

  14. Lunch looks like a movie I want to crawl into. It’s the friends that make it-they are the best view (your actual view rocks though). I have lived with dogs my whole life, they touch my soul. Growing up, we had 4 dogs at once – wonderful chaos. I’m thrilled you fell in love with Babette – it’s a joyous thing to love a dog, and to be loved by one, welcome to the club!

  15. What a lovely trip! So gracious that Lisa invited you and Ladelle to share here beautiful blessings, her dreamy world. I would tell you, Corey, that from the few pictures I have seen from your house, it also has a dreaminess, one that I turn back to my home and say, how can I make mine more dreamy as well? Inspiration.
I am laughing how Babette has stolen your heart, of all things a dog that you are normally so terrified of. May you see her again before long! Maybe Lisa will email you pictures from time to time!

  16. A dog can do that to you.
Was in Willows this wkend and dropped into Gathering, saw Holly and found more great finds. Their place looks soooo beautiful.

  17. Oh, my heart is racing with joy.
    Permanent smile over here.

  18. Corey I’m not a huge dog fan but,
I’ve always said if I had a dog,
it would have to be a King Charles Spaniel. I would have fallen in love with her too.
    ;o)

  19. Babette looks like a heart-stealer. (love the rose willow)

  23. I, too, have always been frightened by dogs Now my daughter has an American Cocker Spaniel called Sadie and I feel quite differently about all dogs since meeting her. I’m sure I would adore Babette.
A lovely post, as usual. Thank you.

  24. Natalie Thiele

Yummy looking quiche. You do lead an enchanted life!

  25. Denise Moulun-Pasek

I am not afraid of dogs but alas… I am allergic.
    She looks divine!

  28. Awwww…. what a cutie pie! When a dog is able to reach your soul it’s never quite the same.

  29. I love this post. I love the photos. I am lukewarm on dogs, but I have not met Babbette!
Beautiful post, Corey…I look forward to visiting your blog everyday.

  30. Fabulous views, wonderful food & freindships…and of course, man’s “best friend”! A perfect day πŸ˜‰

  31. Kimberly

Corey, I love my dog! Her name is Miko and she is a basset hound lab mix. As I write this she is basking in the sunshine snoring away. πŸ™‚ Blessings, Kimberly

  32. My body may be in Missouri but my heart and mind are in Province. Just idyllic….sigh.

  33. Do you know how lucky you are? I think you do. Oh, to be in Provence and eat lovely meals and have lovely scenery and lovely dogs, and go to lovely brocantes!!

  34. I really have died and gone to heaven! Is it possible to OD on too much Provence? Then there is Babette! She is the cutest little dog ever (except for my Dexter!)

  35. Oh Corey, you are a shinging star to dreamland…Could it be anymore beautiful…loved everything about it ..Thank God you didn’t show pictures of The Brocante!! I would of have to go make a batch of choclate chip cookies and eat the whole thing…keep on keeping on…you are the best Warm Regards, Cynthia Wolff

  36. Your blog is so lovely! I looked through it and I just love your pictures!!!

  37. Brenda L from TN

Oh Corey….your trip with Ladelle looks wonderful…how nice of Lisa to invite you both down …and the scenery is to die for…it’s just beautiful…I loved looking at Lisa’s plates hanging on the wall…seemed so cozy. The Lunch looked so good and refreshing. But Babette was the main show. What a sweet face!! She looks so peaceful and obviously knows she’s dearly loved. Lucky Lisa!!! Lucky Babette!!

  38. Rebecca from the Pacific Northwest

Babette is a good ambassador(ess) for all of Dogdom for you!
What town were you overlooking? So beautiful. I love all that pale, faded green too. I want the terrace and it’s protective brick wall and that green door. And some of your wine, please.

  39. Corey,
I posted on the previous post, but oh, it is so very beautiful and so glad you fell in love with Babette. Dogs love us well and ask for so little.
    ah….
maybe your friend will share her recipes. It looks so delicious. πŸ˜€

  40. Jeri Walter

Loved little Babette; my King Charles Cavalier named VINNIE would be smitten, for sure! He has the same coloring minus the white. Could the town be Gorges? I remember it as a cloud of creamy-white buildings high on a hill.

  41. In the second picture I can imagine people riding on horses, and using wagons to transport things. What a lovely view.

  42. I hope that Babette has helped you in your fear of dogs! She is soooooo cute!

  43. OMGosh … You know, I adopted 2 dogs from the S.P.A. in Aix while living there. I’m sure there is one there, just calling for you …
Check out one story about Barney (from the S.P.A.) here:

Green shutters are the best. Green shutters & polka dots rule the world. Babette is supercute. How can you live in France anyway and not have a little dog ? I want a dachsie badly – im going to call him “Serge” – Serge the sausage ! Jx

  45. Corey, Oh dear, you have been bitten! What beauty and grace. What a friend, what a place!
And Babette too! She’s adorable. I’m glad she won you over. My brother’s dog did that to me. He literally set out to charm me. How can you refuse? ENJOY! Sherry

  46. Corey…love your blog! I love the perfection of imperfection. I see the couryard pavers and know that here in my neighborhood….someone would be pulling them up and making them perfectly level…ugh! Love the history of a European home! Salad with beets!!! I haven’t had that since we left Germany…thanks for the reminder! Babette is a cutie..she probably has an instinct that you needed her to be good. You are so blessed with wonderful friendships that take you to wonderful places…please continue taking us along with you.

  47. Lieselotte

Only a dog can persuade you to stop being afraid of dogs, and you seem to have found that special one ! ItΒ΄s beautiful there, Corey. I love Provence !

  48. Corey
What a delightful day you spent at a friends home– replete with all things lovely and joyful.
    Oh my!
Would your friend trade places with me????
    Joanny

  49. The second and third view are so painterly -aah to paint there would be marvelous!

  50. If I EVER had a dog, I’d name her Babette for certain! Had Sophie in mind but maybe Babette where every day with her would be a feast in love and comfort. I could probably give up my boyfriend to have my own little neat living space here near San Francisco and I’d go to work daily then come home to Babette and my computer.

  51. Dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
I know, iknow, Everyone wants a dog but heres another story about someone wanting a dog. I want one and wanted to know what the average price for a girl dog is, for a boy dog is, for a girl puppy, and a boy puppy.
