What is on the Menu: One Black Beret

The-menu-runny-heart

Chocolate cake with runny heart, and a coop of vanilla ice cream.

———————————————–

We are back from Paris.
I have a black beret to give away. If you would like it, add your name to the comment section. I will randomly pick a winner tomorrow.

Also I will try to answer the questions you have recently asked me about my blog and living in France. If you have any others let me know and I will do my best to answer them too (please do not ask me anything mathematical.)

  1. I have loved every Paris post, and felt as if I were journeying right along with you. I would love to see Paris one day, the same way, not as a tourist but through the eyes of an explorer searching out random scenes of quintessential France and discovering beauty in everyday objects. It would be bliss to win the beret, thanks for the chance. And, thanks for posting everyday.

  2. Keith Eckstein

If I won a Black Beret I almost certainly wouldn’t be allowed to wear it (but I could sneakily put it on in private!)

  3. Julienne

Forget the beret (well almost!) I want to win the chocolate cake with the runny middle and the coop of ice cream. Have really enjoyed your trip.

  4. Michelle

    Ooh that dessert sounds delicious!
And I’d love a black beret! So french!

  5. Ha Ha – loved the “don’t ask me anything mathematical”! Your posts are all treasures, Corey – loved reading about Paris – you make it a treat everytime!

  6. Thank you, Corey, for the seven-course meal parisienne! I’m well nourished ana happy and would certainly wear the black beret with pride, since now “I’ve visited Paris” (but not gained any more weight, though).
    love,
    Paivi
P.S. “Pain perdu” – is it really “lost bread” or is it just me who’s lost?

  7. If only… every one could have a little black beret… the world would be smiling …you are the greatest… keep it up… Bluefield WV hugs and kisses Mopsy

  8. thanks for all the postcards, its the closest i’ll get to any vacation this summer, and i would love a french beret…thanks, corey

  9. I have loved your Paris Postcards–now I want to see it and taste it in person!!!

  10. Carol Ludwig

I have thoroughly enjoyed your posts from Paris, and looked forward to them every morning to start my day off right. My favorite photos have to be the bird man, the trees and the candid shot you took of the bride. A French beret would simply “top” things off on the wonderful vacation you took us on this week! Merci

  11. giftsofthejourney (Elizabeth Harper)

    I love Paris!
I’ve been three times, each time for a special occasion.
New Year’s Eve in, 1980 and again 2000 and recently for my honeymoon when I married my husband who’s a Brit. Living where we do in Cornwall it costs about $ 72USD or 50 quid as my husband would say, for us to fly over. I can’t wait to go back.
I’d love a shot at that beret and would create a photo project to share online should I win.

  12. Becky F

Thank you for the beautiful postcards from Paris. It was such a lovely trip I was able to take every morning.

  13. Tammy Hensley

I adore your blog and it only deepens my desire to go to Paris, a lifelong dream! I would look so cute in a beret with my new hairdo!

  14. I went to Paris as a student in 1971, I would love to go back one day!!

  15. It’s been a tough week in this neck of the woods but your Paris Postcards brought many smiles. Merci!!

  16. Runny middle?? Hahha. I love reading funny translations in other countries. I once saw “medias” translated as MIDDLES, instead of “socks” in a laundry list in Oviedo! I’ve never forgotten that!

  17. cynthia

Black beret, yeah!! Reminds me of my junior year in Montpellier… You’re so lucky to live in France!

  18. I have too many questions to ask about living in France to even start, since my husband and I want to live there someday once family obligations allow us to sell our house in SF, but I’ll definitely take you up on the offer someday. In the meantime though, I’d love a chance at the beret. My favorite hat is a beret that my late father bought in France in the 1950s, but I’m afraid that I’m starting to wear it out, so a new one is in order. Thanks for the chance!
    ~ Kelly

  19. The Paris postcards have been remarkable and beautiful–truly visionary…
    Iconic like the beret…

  20. Shirley M.

Loved the pix of your trip. A beret would be great.

  21. Candace

I know this seems odd but when do you do your housework? You always seem to be doing something else.

  22. Paulita

I’m just trying to figure out what kinds of mathematical questions people are asking you about living in France. How many Frenchmen does it take to change a lightbulb?

  23. Chris Wittmann

The offerings on the menu look heavenly! Would love a beret, haven’t worn one in years. I have so many questions, but here is just one. I’ve read that all over France, even down the most remote little side streets, people have “kitchen gardens.” They make do with the smallest allotments, or containers if they have to. have you seen many? I would love to see some of the smaller pocket Kitchen gardens.
    Chris

  24. Eileen @ Passions to Pastry

Black berets are my winter uniform.

  25. corey, as always, enjoying your posts! fingers crossed for the beret!

  26. Dawn Keelin

Thanks for all the beautiful pictures Corey!! You definately need to write a book! Your blog is such a great way to start my day. Yhe Paris pictures brought back so many memories of times spent there.
    Dawn

  27. Thanks for all of your lovely thoughts and photos. I would love to win a beret from Paris!

  28. I enjoy reading the comments as well as reading the blog! hee hee! The question I have is about lace curtains. It seems that everyone in France has a uniform classic lace curtain window treatment. Are they heirlooms handed down or are they still made and available for purchase somewhere? Thanks!

  29. I loved my armchair visit to Paris; the food, the flowers, the faces – and even this menu that looks good enough to eat.
    I would love a beret!

  30. Thank you for the post card trip!! The 5 of us are packing this weekend and tying up loose ends for our trip to France. We leave Thursday and will be there Friday. The anticipation is sweet.
See you soon, Sharon and the rest of the girls

  31. Coery- Paris is now that much higher on my “must visit” list because of you! I have loved each and every post. It’s almost like being there.
If I won the beret, I would wear it every day until my husband agreed to take me to Paris. I don’t care when we go- he just has to agree! Baby steps, you know. 😉

  32. Cheryl ~ Casual Cottage Chic

So enjoyed tagging along with you and family in Paris! Toss in the black beret and my journey is complete…for now 🙂

  33. Sue Johnpeter

Chere Corey: the postcards have been absolutely fabulous. Thank you for making my day every day.

  34. Jeanette Mc. from Everton Terrace

I enjoy every single one of your posts and the Paris trip was no exception. It was the cheapest vacation I ever took. I was wondering about the price of jewelry at the brocante. I deal in vintage jewelry and was just curious if it was worth a trip over – do they have what we call “thrift” stores in France?

  35. It’s been 13 years since my only trip to Paris. Your blog sends me back. Love it!
Did you keep a journal as a girl?

  36. Lorelei Lane

The Paris Postcards have been delicious eye-candy for those of us who dream of being in Paris one day. I’m sitting here in a Paris t-shirt and jeans and that beret would look very chic with my greying hair. Keeping my fingers crossed….toes, too! Nice work, Corey!

  37. cynthia Wolff @Beatenheart

I could post a photograph of me in the 7th grade wearing a black beret while all the other kids laughed at me for being a “weirdo”…I also went all the way to Milwaukee to get a black leather “John Lennon” visor cap like the one he wore he Hard Days Night…huge laughs over that…but that was me…I didn’t fit in in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I would have fit in in Paris, France or some artsy colony
where anything goes…My question is and it is bold and it is not very polite but can I come with you to that big brocante in June?? I won’t be a bother and I’ll be a very good girl and I’ll turn the other way when we both spot at the exact same time the most awesome items is spotted on someones table…merci

  38. I have been wondering how your children are doing, and especially if Mr. Wonderful who showed up with breakfast in a bag is still in pursuit . . .
Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Thank you again for Paris.
(Are we supposed to specify that we have interest in the beret? I do! I do!)

  39. Debra P.

the picturesque Paris postcards and thought provoking prose took me away from my daily grind and across the Atlantic right up the Seine and into the streets that I know will recognize me once I get there. . .thanks for the virtual holiday and for the new perspective.
ps do you think the beret might help the Champs Elysees recognize me?

  40. Jeanette M

Glad you had a good trip and everyone is back safe. Where is the next adventure going to take us?

  41. I would love a beret. Randomly pick ME!

  42. Julie Ann Evins

Welcome home. I have enjoyed the Paris trip. I was too late to post yesterday but the gardens & the analogy with love was beautiful in every way. That final picture of Yann was a cracker too Corey, God Bless, Jx

  43. Dear Corey,
I love how your eyes see the world….Paris was picture perfect! I hope to see Paris in June with my daughter and sister-in-law. Thank you as always for sharing.
    Missy from the bayou
ps.your pictures are a backdrop for the real treasure….the words you write.

  44. Please Don’t Ask Me Anything Mathmatical!!!!
Corey, you just crack me up. Welcome home. I’m so happy you had such a great trip.

  45. Jamie V

Your posts and my coffee are the first thing I do in the morning. I so enjoyed your Paris postcard photos. I’ve never been to France but it seems to be a lovely and magical place. Thank you for sharing everyday.
I surely would love to win the beret. I think I would look rather smart in it.

  47. J’adore un beret noir!

  48. There are things that just naturally go togeether. Coffee and Tongue in Cheek are just two of them. Each morning I drag myself out here to the computer, switch it on, fix a coffee and then I am off reading about places that are of great interest written by people who I have come to know(in an abstract way perhaps). Your postcards were so lovely and your camera catches what fancies your heart. Thanks so much for sharing.
Got the lemon tart recipe, fixed it. Figured out (after the fact) that I should have baked the puff pastry shells BEFORE I put the lemon mix in them. Sigh. You’d think by this age I’d know these things instinctively. Perhaps I wasn’t destined to be a good cook.

  49. Valerie

I thought your pictures with post yesterday was just great, but did not have time to respond. How nice I have time this morning and can also be part of your contest.

  50. Denise Moulun-Pasek

I’m still appreciating yesterday’s post! The pictures were beautiful, makes me want to hop on a plane to Paris and play peek a boo with V. Who knows, he might look cute with a beret.

  51. The anticipation of the visual feast of your adventures in Paris lured me to my computer each morning last week. You have such a gift with combining photography and words! Thank you, Corey!
    2 couples
    + 1 camera
    + 7 days in Paris
    = Pure Enchantment!

  52. pick me, pick me. I have a math Q that you can do: 2 + 2 =

  53. Terri Von Doran

    Bonjour,
Out of all the places you have visited throughout France where is your most favorite, memorable place and why.

  54. Kathie B.

9 Euros for a dessert? Ouch!
Kathie B. (not to be confused with kathie @ 2:55 PM!)

  55. Kathie B.

    P.S. I actually LOVE math!

  56. meppybn

That’s what I want – a runny heart!!! and a coop de vanillia to calm things down at times………..

  57. Your blog is amazing! I just sent a link to a friend who LOVES everything French. I would love to be chosen to receive the beret. I am an RN and work in a hospital. There is this elderly volunteer who is New Orleans and he NEEDS a little black beret. Blog on, Cindy

  58. I would like the beret! Yum! The desserts seem yummy!! I love chocolate!

  59. love your blog ad your quirky little contests.

    carol

  61. meant to add…I love the pictures of the accordian player and the dancers. I could almost hear the music! Thank you for the chance to win a very French beret!

  62. Thank you again for all those wonderful photos you took for us!!! They were a delight to view! And a beret giveaway – how fun! You know, my SIL and brother took their toddler to Paris two years ago and hunted down the perfect beret (they lost the beret by the way ~ baby hid it somewhere in their room in Paris ~ lol)! They were scheduled to return to Paris this month, but had to cancel the trip as baby #2 is due very soon. Should I win your generous giveaway, the beret will go to my nephew when his little sibling is born… a souvenier from the trip he wasn’t able to take (and they’d finally have their real French beret back)! 😉
    Happy weekend!

  63. waftbyCarol

My wardrobe cries out for a black beret , to cover the gray…
    hey that rhymes !
Great pics of Paris…if vicariously is the only way , yours will be enough .

  64. bobbi godding

I just came in from pulling weeds in my overgrown garden. I stood at one point and thought I think I’d rather be in Paris. It has been a joy to “visit” through your postcards – thanks for the trip.

  65. Rhonda P.

Oh Corey, I so need a black beret for my trip to Paris this fall. Yes, I am actually going to make it! I’m still in shock but Paris here we come. My first trip to France and I am walking around in a daze. I actually dreamt I was at your house last night. Everyone around the kitchen table was American, you had tons of American girlfriends visiting you. Are you laughing?
Bonjour! I’m practicing my French, LOL

  66. You make me remember so many beautiful times when I spent three years living in Mons, Belgium and traveling the short distance to many nearby parts of France including Paris. Thanks for the memories.

  67. Jessica

What a fun Parisian adventure. You did a fantastic job searching out all the requests!

  68. Janet Maddison

Did the coop of icecream come with or without chickens?

  69. Julie W.

Corey, Merci Mille Fois for the vicarious holiday in Paris. Thanks also to Yann, Gene, and Kathy for being such good sports and able assistants.
It’s impossible to name a favorite post or post-card, but I must say that I was very touched by the Victory Day Parade. Would love to hear the stories behind the precious faces.
Each day I would quickly devour your photos, then go back to chew on your thoughtful text.
Were you able to find the perfume Kathy was looking for? What kind did she buy? If I were so lucky as to win your black beret, would you consider spritzing it with some french perfume before sending it on it’s way???
Corey, you are a gem and your blog is such a perfect way for many to enjoy your sparkle!
    Julie W.

  70. Isabel ~ Maison Douce

Corey, I have been wanting to know for a long time why you go by your maiden name… Did you not add your husband’s last name when you got married? Just curious…!!!!

My question is why were you in a monastery? Was it a job or were you thinking of joining?

  109. My question: is there any hope of getting my husband to go with me to Paris? He’s lactose-intolerant and every menu we see looks impossible!

  110. Margaret Dennis

Chocolate cake with a “runny heart” was one of my favorite discoveries in Paris. We celebrated by birthday at “La Petit Troquet” in the 7th and I had runny heart for dessert! I recommend La Petit Troquet to anyone!
