Mother’s Day in France

Family1
Photos and Text by: Corey Amaro

Family leads the way on a windy day.

Lunch thankfully booked indoors.

Narrow street in a picture book village: La Treille.

Pages of Marcel Pagnol read aloud.

Family

Son tells a story,

Father laughs,

Mother takes a photo from behind.

Red tiles nearby creates the scene.

Blue-shutters
Orange-tree

Shutter-lantern
stone window-sill

Blue shutters, street lanterns, orange tree growing on the window sill.

Fountain sings, church bells ring, Garlaban reaches towards the sky.

Mother has thoughts of tying her apron strings around her children.

French-restaurant

A French restaurant as it has been since the turn of the century.

Content under the leafy tree.

The waiter said, "The view is dessert."

Mother replied, "With a side of Ile Flottant si vous plait."

How could she not… the restaurant is known for both.

Dinner-fork-and-knife

Homey, floral tablecloth instead of checked.

Fork turned up reminds French family that they are at a restaurant and not at Bonne Maman's.

Restaurant-with-a-view

Mother's Day Lunch.

Restaurant with a view.

Restaurant

Since 1896, in the footsteps of Marcel Pagnol.

La Cigalon.

Aubagne, France.

limoncello

At the end of the meal the waiter brought out chilled limoncello.

Dipping a sugar cube into a drink in France is called a "Canard".

One can also say to a loved one you are "Mon canard au sucre".

  3. Thee are lovely photos, looks like the ideal place for a mother’s day lunch. So understand about the apron strings, but look at them : full-grown , beautiful and ready to fly the nest thanks to the good start you’ve given them!
    Have a great week

  4. Canard? Doesn’t that mean “duck”? So…does Canard Au Sucre mean Sugar Duck??

To quote the Marx Brothers in the classic film “Cocoanuts” — “Why a duck?” (LOL!)
Belated Happy Mothers Day. Here in the US it’s Memorial Day observed (given our passion for government-ordained three-day weekends).

  7. I wish I could have had my Mothers Day there. Lovely.

Oh corey, your daughter, if that is truly the gorgeous woman in the first photo, has all the poise and grace the french are famous for.
I could never pull it off, I am much more the celtic hobbit kind and cannot ‘do’ heals at all.
Hope you had a beautiful day and let your worrisome apron strings float away!

“La gloire de mon père” for upcoming father’s day is merited after this post of “Le chateau de ma mère”. Modern Pagnol stories with an American twist!

  11. Happy Mother’s Day Corey! How I would love to have grown up with a mother like you. Thank you again for sharing!

  14. Ile Flottant?
AHHHHHH. So that is what I ate. Not knowing what I ate, I called it “puffs of souffle” on my blog post.

    in my head.
