Antique Porron

Porron

This is a Porron

The winners are:

The creative answer winner is  Denise Moulun-Pasek, with her response:

"A
genie bottle with a fire escape."

Jojo, it isn't a cruche because the pottery ones are for water, they have them in France as well.

Mahala, it is a Porron but a porron isn't a wine decanteur.

And the correct answer (Name and description), and the first one to leave it in the comment section is:

Mo'a:

"This looks
very much like a Spanish Porrón…
is this the French version?
The Porrón has a straight spout and still one spills large quantities of
vine on ones chest…this one with the spout down looks like it
guarantees that more ends up on ones shirt than in the mouth."

Thank you for the wonderful guesses everyone!

I ashamed of myself that I didn’t know this as I am an Anthony Bourdain fan and loved the episode where this very thing played a key role.
Congrats to the winner! What fun!

How nice to know what that “thing” actually is–I’ve seen them and wondered. The video is hilarious — the suited man clearly does not approve–it made me giggle.

Alas, I was wrong as usual. Need is the mother of invention, for sure.

When I read the correct answer, I still wasn’t sure what exactly this thing was for… so I turned to Wikipedia. Found an interesting guote:
“George Orwell described a porró in Homage to Catalonia:
“ …and drank out of a dreadful thing called a porron. A porron is a sort of glass bottle with a pointed spout from which a thin jet of wine spurts out whenever you tip it up; you can thus drink from a distance, without touching it with your lips, and it can be passed from hand to hand. I went on strike and demanded a drinking-cup as soon as I saw a porron in use. To my eye the things were altogether too like bed-bottles, especially when they were filled with white wine.”

In Mexico, it is made out of leather and call a “boda”, “bota” bag….spelling may be wrong. The leather bag is shaped like a “comma” and you fill it with wine, to drink you start at your mouth and extend your arms to full length, not breaking the stream of wine…..HA, yes you get splattered with wine…ah my youth….

  12. I guess that vessel or pitcher is more of a proper answer than decanter…oh well, I tried. 😉
    Congrats to the winner!
