Are you ready to do what you have been wanting to do?

BMX-BACKFLIP

Photo and text by: Corey Amaro.

It was his last class, the last time he would ride before going to California for a year.

I dropped him at the BMX site, and hollered as he pushed his bike and carried his gear towards the track, "You aren't going to do a back flip today are you?"

"No. I'll wait until you bring your camera."

Driving away I laughed at my sly move. "Gotcha!" I said to myself, "I won't bring my camera, and my boy will be safe."

Later I would recall how he didn't promise. I should have made him promise and crossed his heart, and hope to die and stick a needle in his eye. But I didn't.

He stood taller, he had a smile that only a mother's detective eye can read, "There is something going on behind that ear to ear grin."

"I did it! I back flipped!" He blurted.

"You didn't!" I gasped.

"I did, and Oh mom you wouldn't believe how scary-cool it was. My heart was pumping. You know it is wild! I did that back flip a million times in the foam pit, but WOW is it a different world doing it in the dirt."

I was speechless. Then cried a mixture of happy, sad, I-am-going-to-kill-you, happy again, thrilled and most of all proud. "Tell me, tell me all about it. How did it feel?"

He talked in details the entire thirty minute drive home:

How his head nearly touched the jump as he spun over it.

How his pedals were perfectly placed, and his speed just right.

The taste of freedom in the air, the lightness of being, the darkness of fear.

The distant bird singing as he flipped over.

The sound of the dirt as he hit the ground nearly falling over.

He was like a sparkler glowing multicolor feelings and thoughts. He had that energy bursting from him, the kind one gets when one touches something beyond here and now.

As he beamed a thousand different directions he wrapped me in one of his golden rays setting me on fire!

I wish I had been there to take a photo, but the one in my mind's eye, the description he gave was priceless:

He is ready to fly.

  1. Every so often life feeds you a metaphor. Not so much feeds you as it slaps you upside of the head! Wow. This was just great. – Kathy

  2. Your priced bird is ready to fly – you did a marvelous job, Corey!
Am I ready? I may just be ready to drive to France this summer. After visiting Lyon last March, I am smitten and can’t wait to see more of France. All I am worried is if it is a wise move, during the hot days of summer, if there will be rooms in the inns.

  3. Awesome. You have really given him wings. Every mother’s dream

  4. Your boys with their lust for danger and adventure…such an appreciation of life! I’ve always wanted to stop writing commercials at a radio station and write professionally for magazines and books…at 51 I finally am! You?

  5. It’s funny how I am so excited for him. Yes, he is ready. Suppose the question has always been, are you?

  6. Wow! What a wonderful story. How exciting for him. I know your heart must have done flips but you should be so proud of yourself for giving him the confidence to
follow his dream. Congratulations to him and
    congratulations to you. Very exciting.

  7. So Sacha’s definitely going to California for a year. That’s a really huge adventure for him! What will he be doing there?
Every time I start translating something new, I feel the same combination of exhilaration and terror!

  8. Hurray Sacha! That takes GUTS!
And Sacha is going to California for a year? To work on a farm or to go to school or both? How exciting for him, Corey!

  9. Corey, Yann’s blog isn’t allowing me a text-box to type in the verification letters (speaking of things I’d like to do!), so here’s my message for him:
    * * * * *
“Un motel… sans moustique” — très bien!
“Il fait toujours aussi chaud et humide sous nos combinaisons de motards” — bien, c’est Juillet 😉

  10. I wish I could have been there to catch a golden ray also. You described the thrill so well. It is so true, we must follow our passion to feel these feelings. I was thinking of this just yesterday and thinking I need to jump more, run toward my passions.

  11. Priceless!

  12. HE DID IT!!!! I can feel the thud in your stomach as he told you, but his description was exceptional. He did it and didn’t get broke into pieces…now you can relax and be more sure that he won’t break in pieces in Calif. Find comfort in the fact he will be close to your family and his sister.
    Motherhood…a college of it’s own.
    hugs

  13. oh wow! Congratulations to Sacha, what a victory!!!

AH….I know how you feel about the flip. My youngest son did a simular stunt and broke his leg!!!…I was so mad but then happy he was going to be OK…then mad again, fussing the whole way to the hospital and then thankful he was alright…I wasn’t there to witness the stunt,(I still call it that). I probably would have fainted.I’m secretly glad you weren’t either…it’s too much for a Mom.
We carry them for 9 months and the bond is so strong that when they are in pain we are in pain. So I’m glad I wasn’t there.
But like Sacha, my Todd grew up and came into his own and is happily married and I have two beautiful grandchildren.
Sacha will come to America and have great adventures because he has the courage that that “stunt” gave him. Best wishes to him.

  15. Yay Sacha, good on you for facing down a challenge! And yes Corey, you have amuch better ‘picture’ than if you had had a camera…… and good on you too, for facing down your challenge to let go……

  16. My god … he’s the fifth Amaro brother.
    Another “bien” for Sacha.

  17. I love dare devils who share all the details.
    Cheers!…to his success and survival.

  18. Your description made me feel the excitement of this moment.
I would hope my happiness for my son could trump the fear and worry. You did well.
You are a good mother, Corey Amaro.

  19. Good for Sacha! (and, indirectly, good for you too–next time you’ll be ready to watch and take pictures).

  20. Had to do a double take when I saw that photo. “Scary-cool.” So much adrenaline in one word. And then you show us the poetry of life it holds. I’m dazzled.

  21. Please tell me the biker in that photo is wearing a helmet.

  22. Your Father would be proud!

  23. Wow! How great he must feel. I’m torn between elation for him and protectiveness!

  24. YAY Sacha!
Glad he’s coming to California for a year. I guess you will be visiting, too. How wonderful!

    Wow

  26. Wow! So much happening in your life, right now. Wouldn’t it be ironic if both kids decided to stay in the U.S.?
