Destination with a Twist of Lemon

Wonderign-what-to-drink

Photos and text by: Corey Amaro

Wondering what to drink on these long, luscious summer days?

Here is a list of the newest summer drinks. Ice cold, served on the Mediterranean, nice and oh so hot (if that makes sense.)

Umbrella-by-the-rocks

Umbrella by the Rocks:

Sparkling Asti Spumante with a splash of violet over crushed ice.

Sunbathing-on-the-rocks

Sunbathing on the Rocks:

White wine, Perrier, poured over chunks of lemon, orange, and pineapple, served with a drop of mint syrup.

Private-castel

Private Castel:

Frozen yogurt milkshake with blueberries and blackberries.

Pretty-in-pink

Pretty in Pink:

Amaretto, cranberry juice, a touch of sparkling water, vodka and slice of lime.

Speedo

Speedo:

A ice cold glass of beer with lemonade, served on a checked tablecloth.

Brown-with-blue

Brown Bodies with a Splash of Blue:

Hug a friend, then hug another friend, then hug your neighbor, kiss the dog, wave to the lady across the street and then jump into the pool.

Topless

Topless:

With a string,

and long blond hair.

Geez.

I imagine how sunburned I would be, and how scary I would look.

A drink I'd rather forgo for your sake.

Moi-et-toi

Moi et Toi:

"Do we drink cocktails?" I asked him.

"Do I want a cocktail?" He responded.

"No, do we drink cocktails?" I repeated.

"Why do you ask? I do not understand." He questioned.

"Yann, it is just a question. A simple question. No reason, just because. Do we drink cocktails?" I asked, with a touch of exasperation.

"We drink red wine." He said giving me a puzzled look.

With a loud groan I begged "Give me a glass!"

Giving me a glass he said, "Do you want to make a cocktail?"

Mile-high

Mile High:

"What would that taste like?" I dared to ask.

He shook his head, "Enough."

Black-beauty

Black Beauty:

Ice cold coffee, vodka, thick cream, blended with Kahlua and chocolate syrup, times three.

P.S. And not all French women are skinny thank God.

Toothpick-without-an-olive

Toothpick without an Olive.

Served on hot rocks, under a pink towel and coconut oil on top.

FISHNET

Fish Net:

Kool aid, the sweetest kind.

What is your preferred drink? Honestly, mine is tap water without ice. And red wine with dinner.

  1. I have it on good authority that those two lovely women you used to explain Black Beauty weren’t, in fact, French but were English day-trippers from Blackpool.
It’s true – all French women are slim!
    All the best
    Keith

  2. Water, then iced coffee, and for alcohol we prefer whiskey & coke, port and beer….. But not all at once…

  3. Thank you Corey for this post! just what I needed! so sparking! a beautiful cocktail 🙂
I prefer water (icy actually) and red wine for dinner as you.
but once in a while I will love a Margarita (only the one made by a friend in Baja California around their pool)
or a “Cuba libre” made with Venezuelan Rhum, coke and a little of lemon.
    xoxo

  4. Cold water with a chunk of lemon. Eskimo flip?

  5. So-o-o clever Corey!
    My drink?
All the time. Just like you, water straight from the tap. Love it!
In between all the time. Tea.
Celebrations. A sweet sparkling something or other that we always do a “Cheers” with.
Alcoholic. Gin and tonic, lemon and ice.
p.s. Black Beauties cannot possibly be French…

  6. In the summer, iced tea with lemon (a tiny bit of sugar, not too sweet.) In the winter, coffee Americana (meaning weak, with lots of milk, no sugar.)
I love the pix of the big boned gals:)

  7. What a fantastic, imaginative, playful post, Corey! 🙂
I have come to love the two ubiquitous Viennese summer drinks:
    1) Soda Citron – Sparkling water with the fresh lemon juice, cold, but no ice and no sugar either,
    2) G’spritzter – half Grüner Veltliner (an Austrian dry white wine), half sparkling water (there’s also a Summer G’spritzter, one quarter wine, three quarter water).

  8. Water, soda, or iced tea – all iced with the glass working up a sweat.
I love all the fancy drinks, but, prefer to eat my calories. A glass of Reisling now and then, I prefer it cold, is my wine of choice and a sip of sherry after dinner is oh-so-mellow.

  9. In the summer I love an Arnold Palmer (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade).
Year round a gin (tangueray) and tonic with lime and ice in a short chunky glass or a kir royale!!!

  10. You just crack me up Corey!!!
My favorite drink is water, with out ice or green tea.
    I love and miss you…..I owe you a Uganda letter don’t I?

  11. Your photos are priceless! I’m thrilled to hear that it’s not just us ice-cream eating New Englanders that are chubby 🙂 the drinks sound fabulous!

  12. water with lemon or lime, no ice except during summer is my mainstay. I also love freshly squeezed orange juice – yum!

  13. Suntea with a slice of lemon! Ah, so refreshing on a hot summer day. For evening, a very cold gin and tonic with a slice of lime. We have about 25 wineries nearby but we don’t drink much wine. If we do it would be from South Coast Winery…they have been rated number one in California for several years 😉

  14. I’m a 1/2 Ice Tea 1/2 Lemonade kind of gal, but lately I’ve been craving a Basil Gimlet.
    Refreshing!

  15. Love that French women come in all sizes. Just like in America.
Summer drinks would be tap water…Iced tea with a shot of Amaretto, and sometimes a nice red wine in the evening.

  16. I’m a margarita on the rocks kinda girl, but I also love amaretto sours.

  17. Water, hands down. On occasion, hot green tea.

  18. Simply a joy–Thanks!!

  19. What a delightful post! I loved the old women in bathing suits – reminded me of a dear, old friend who when she was 82 years young said she wanted to get her feet in the water. She lived with her son near the ocean. Her grandson, my son (both 10 years old) and I helped her down the steep, sandy beach and across the sand to the water. When she stepped into the water, the look of sheer joy on her face was so beautiful. And she insisted that she wear her bathing suit (under a housedress/coat) in case she wanted to swim. She didn’t. We waded for some time and I have always thought of her when I hesitated to put “the great white whale (me)” in a bathing suit. Nobody is going to remember a fat old woman on the beach, but the fat old woman will long remember the joy of swimming again. We had quite a time getting her back UP the steps – the boys each had one of her arms and I pushed from “behind”. We sat on the bench at the top of the trail and laughed and laughed. It is a wonderful memory of an old friend who has been gone for a long time.

  20. I’m a water woman, with a little g&t for the summer, but I will soon make one of those sparkling white wine with violet combos. Oh, and since I live in Texas, add iced tea to my list…

  21. I love Keith’s comment… most likely true.
And such a fun flavorful read today with my morning coffee…not my favourite drink…that is my Happy Hour gin, soda, lemon…lots of ice…which I hope to share with you and Mme.
    Tortoise one day??!!

  22. Cool water with lots of lemon in the day, with an occasional iced double tall mocha. After the “sun is past the yardarm” red or white wine or champagne.Never have cared much for mixed drinks/cocktails.

  23. I agree wholeheartedly with those who’ve already posted that cold water with a lemon wedge is the most refreshing drink when one is really hot and thirsty.
If one requests water in a US restaurant, the “default setting” is non-sparkling water with ice, which is what I want, so no problem (sometimes comes with a lemon wedge!). If the server doesn’t automatically give me a straw I politely request one, so the ice won’t clink against my teeth when I drink the water.
However, when in the Azores, I’ve learned to ask for “água fria sem” — meaning water that’s:
    a) “fria” (refrigerated till cold, rather than at room temperature); and,
    b) not carbonated (“sem” is short for “sem gaz,” meaning literally without gas).
Oh Corey, it’s hot and really muggy here this week — the “dog days of summer” — so now I’m thirsty again already, just thinking about this :-))))

  24. I don’t drink alcohol.I drink hot tea (as any self-respecting English woman does) and water without ice. BUT…your description of the Black Beauty has me salivating…!

  25. Hah! Keith’s comment really cracked me up. I strongly suspect it’s true! What a clever and funny post, Corey, I loved this whimsical take on summer.

  26. I learned to drink rum when I lived in the bahamas , so my favorite cocktail when it is hot is a mojito :
shot of rum – Meyers dark preferably
    shot of simple syrup
    juice of a lime
    lots of crushed fresh mint
    glass of ice cubes
    fill with sparkling water
    ahhhhh….
however , just sparkling water with a lime wedge is very nice !

  27. Coffee in the morning and red wine at night.

  28. Brenda L from TN

What a unique and lovely post…you have such a fun imagination…
That Pretty in Pink sounds wonderful…
    My “drink” is a Vodka Collins…limit two…really good…
After that iced sweet tea or white grape juice over ice…AHHHHH

  29. I am a water girl too. At night I drink a glass of ice milk. Blessings, Kimberly

  30. I drink water, water and more water. When I tire of water I love ginger peach ice tea, no sugar. When we go out to dinner I like sparkling water or a moscato. Every now and then in the evening I like 10 yr old madera.
My friend just wrote about a drink called pink panties. I need to find out more.
I can be found enjoying a diet coke.

  31. MuseumMom

Water Water Water all the time – gin and tonic in the summer as a “cocktail” after 5PM and wine with dinner!

  32. Victoria Ramos

Thank GOD all french women aren’t thin! so I can relax! I agree with Penny – H20, plain Ice tea, or diet coke (I call it ‘a fluffy soda, because I only like diet coke from a fountain, not a can), iced up so cold…Ahh.
My hubby is in the wine business – so alcoholic drink of choice is always wine – there is always an open bottle on the counter for dinner….but I rarely drink…..with the exception of perhaps an absolutely frosty Margarita in a giant glass with salt on a super hot Sacramento day!
I LOVED this post – however I am now extremely thirsty!

  33. It is so cold in San Francisco right now that we don’t want to get out of bed, and we have to use the heater, and …Chelsea can fill you in! All we want to drink are hot toddies and irish coffees. Which reminds me, do you, or maybe Annie ;), have any tisane or infusion recipes to share? Do tell Annie that her orange and onion salad is a big hit in SF!

  34. In the morning~coffee. The rest of the day~water with ice. In the summer~iced coffee.

  35. Quintessential luxury. The martini. sHaKeN. Extra dry. Two olives and a toothpick.
Today’s post has found a place on my TIC top five list. Brava Corey!

  36. Too funny, my favorite drink is tap water without any ice… Seriously!!
    Isabel

  37. Just got back from the Azores. Eveyone was drinking Sages.

  38. I seem to have a thing for spicy tomato drinks:
1.) Bloody Mary – get that horseradish in there…it has to have some kick!
2.) Michelada – you can’t go wrong with this Mexican concoction!

  39. Favorite drink is cold, cold water with lemon.
And the green “modesty bars” were funny. In Canada, we would probably use strategically placed maple leaves. Maybe in France a fleur de lis would be appropriate? LOL
Wonderful post. How DO you think of these things? Fabulous.

  40. Very cute post. Mine? Coke Cola with my own home made Vanilla Vodka during the day and when it cools off at night coffee with vanilla vodka;)

  41. Delphine Payne

I had to comment on the Speedo – beer with lemonade. That has been a drink in Australia for years – not so popular now. It was considered a polite drink for women and called a Shandy. The was many years ago and as a child I sampled it. Ah memories.

  42. I just wanted to add that in Austria, the “Speedo” – beer with lemonade – goes by the name “Radler” (a radler is a cyclist, bike rider). Now I wonder if they were thinking of a cyclist speeding along or wearing a Speedo. 😉

  43. ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘Black Beauties’ now if they were MY friends I would dare to wear my swimsuit! I loved the photos, thank you. My drink of choice is tap water – no ice -several pints each day, and when it is too cold I like Drinking Chocolate.

  44. Unsweet iced tea with lemon and margaritas with salt!

  45. Corey,
I had Heineken w/simple lemon syrup in Paris exactly 5 years ago this week. I felt like I couldn’t take 10 steps without sitting at a lovely cafe taking in the sights (people) and enjoying my new favorite drink. I had just finished chemo/radiation for Breast Cancer, so I looked like I was dying, but I felt like I had just been born. That will always be my favorite drink and I will always associate it with my Parisian adventure. Vive la France (the wine was wonderful too)!

  46. When it is ghastly hot like it has been for the past month, I’ll unwind after a long day at the office with a large goblet of super-iced water spiked with a tablespoon of creme de cassis and a twist of lemon. So refreshing! Loved the ladies in black, the man in the plaid speedo…AND the beautiful sea looks so sparkling and inviting!!! I keep a large shell on my bedside table so that I can listen to the sea every night before I fall asleep.

  47. I like drinking with my friends on the beach while burning fish, delicious ……………

  48. I’m with you, Corey, but the wine can be red, white, rose, or any color in-between. PS I was invited to the New York Yacht Club tonight . . .wow! . . .wish I could share the pictures like you . . .it was so much fun!

  49. Julie Ann Evins

Very funny today Coco. I like to drink soya latte in the morning, still water no ice, rose wine in Summer, red in Winter. Champagne of course and twinings lemon & ginger tea – all day if im sick. Oh, and really good hot chocolate, have found a wonderful Parisian brand with no dairy. Enough… Jx

  50. Lots of ice water.
    With dinner – wine
Otherwise – Cosmos (made MY way), Mojitos, Sangria, Margaritas

  51. Rebecca from the Pacific Northwest

We saw lots of “black beauty” sized ladies in Croatia, except there they wear bikinis. Such freedom about their bodies was refreshing.

  52. Love the black beauties and you have matched them up with one of my favorite drinks.

  53. Joan Tankersley

The white wine, Perrier, with fruit on the rocks combo is screaming to me. I sit in my office with AC looking at the pool, which sort of makes you confused. It is 105 outside my window, but am like a fish in bowl watching comfortably.
I’d rather be on that beach with one of those in my hand. Like right now.

  54. Marie-Noëlle

Have the bowl of mojito ready for me, please !!!
