Miracles at Marburger

Nance Harper

Photography and text by: Corey Amaro of Nance Harper's Antiques

Marburger antiques dealers work hard for the money. Do not think that those beautiful antiques, in those lovely booths, just happen to be there because an antique dealer went on a vacation to Europe, or that they arrived on their doorstep by a fairy godmother, or by waving their golden hand over their booth….

Antique dealers have a crazy passionate drive and live, breath, eat and probably pee antiques.

Months before a show, antique dealers are searching high and low for antiques. Weeks later they are refinishing or restoring the antiques they bought, then packing antiques into their trucks, swearing at the vase that broke while packing the truck. Next they set out to drive across country, doubting the GPS, hoping that the hotel has secured parking and an internet connection. Then the next day they are unpacking their trucks at the fair in 110 degree heat, laying the floor to their stands, setting up the walls, hooking up the electricity, swearing at the cord they tripped over that made the lamp come tumbling down to the ground, wanting something to eat and finding their lunch floating in the ice chest. Antiques dealers spend hours twinking their stands, usually going back to the hotel very late at night only to sleep a few hours before the fair begins…

Bella the dog

Antiques dealers have dogs. Bella is next to us in the tent. She has sweet eyes. I guess I better get over my fear fast if I want to play in this game.

Fragment antiques

Back at the house (that we rented in Marburger) we realized there wasn't an internet connection… I began to think my record for blogging everyday for nearly five years would actually miss a day or two, the thought was not pleasing.

Luckily though at the fair I met Nance Harper an antique dealer from Atlanta who reads my blog. She asked me if I was going to blog while at Marburger. I told her my plight.

Now, here is the miracle thing about blogging, Nance said, "Oh Corey you can use my computer, I have a card that you can connect with anywhere… here take my computer, use it, write your blog, I would be honored!"

Antique dealers are nuts.

Bloggers are nuttier.

Both are loving ones at that.

Antique wallpaper

(Fragments of nineteen century French wallpaper)

Back at the house, French Husband looked at the computer and asked, "Where did you find that?!"

"Nance Harper lent it to me."

"Who's Nance? She gave you, a stranger her computer… You got to be kidding?!"

"I'm not." I said as I typed this post.

"No really Corey, just like that, she let you take her computer."

"Yeah, I am lucky like that."

French Husband shook his head, "That is why I like being with you… good things come your way like the sun rising… steady and sure."

"Blogging and brocante… a girl's best friend," I said, "Honey, Nance and I know each other because we blog. We go way back. Friends do things like this."

French Husband raised his hands in the air and said, "Believing is seeing. I have seen it all. You get a computer from a stranger just becauseshe reads your blog."

The only thing I could say was, 'Yep."

Painted canvas

Nance had this large painted, nineteen century, French canvas.

When the fair opened, a couple bought it first thing in the morning… Nance told me what they were going to use it for… you would never believe it. I wanted to run after the couple and take it back.

They are going to put it on an automatic roller, which will cover their TV when not in use.

A great idea, but how long do you think that nineteen century painting is going to last being rolled up and down everyday, twenty times a day?

Antique dealers love their babies.

Later in the day Nance found out that the place she was renting had a plumbing problem, they asked their guest to leave. Nance had not place to stay during the fair.

Guess where Nance is staying tonight?

What goes around comes around. One act of kindness brings a tidal wave of goodness.

  1. God bless Nance Harper. I’m so glad you are able to blogg from Marburger since I’m dying to see it through your eyes. And God bless you, too, for your act of kindness to Nance. The blogging world is such a friendly and amazing place. It almost makes me want to start a blog. I hope Marburger is all that you hope it will be and that French Husband will love his time there as much as you do.

  2. What is so ” It’s a small world ” about this post is that Nance Harper lives and works in a building where I used to live in downtown Atlanta.
I hopped over to her blog to see her space and thought, ” Wait a minute, I recognize those windows and concrete support pillars.
Please tell Nance that Elizabeth Harper now located in Cornwall, England asked her to give Sarah ( who keeps the building and contents together) a big hello from across the sea.
Oh and ask her about the lovely things that can often be found in the ” Trash or Treasures ” space of a special old building that is filled with artists and other creative types.

  3. LOVE this story!! You are really special Corey! Can’t wait to meet you someday! God bless you! Cy

  5. It is a wonderful world we live in. It is just too bad stuff like this doesn’t make it on the 6 o’clock news.

What a super nice thing for Nance to do…and for you to be able to return the favor in like kind!! Isn’t it great when people can do nice things like that for each other??…I’ve never been to Marburger so I’m hoping you can get lots and lots of pictures. I’ve been to the Tennessee State Fair Grounds for the monthly antiques sale but that’s the biggest place I’ve been. Have a great time and thanks so much for “taking us along”.

  7. Traveling friend to Marburger is sick, so we can’t make it this year, sigh. Seeing it through your lense is all I get. Sigh. I’m so sad I will miss all of it.
Your photos and stories keep me happy.

  8. Isn’t it amazing how the love of antiques can bring us all together…a common thread weaving through our hands. Sometimes a tug on the thread draws us even closer.

  9. What a generous gesture of Nance to lend you her computer – and you a place to stay. I don’t think people who are unfamiliar with blogging “get it” – the connection that slowly takes place across the cyberwaves.
Your photos are magnificent, Corey, and they bring me to the fair. Thank you.

  10. Corey, thanks for the uplifting post today. And you are right, what comes around goes around . . .you give and share with all of us every day. can’t thank you enough.

  11. You are truly blessed. I’m so glad for Nance.. you get to use a computer and she has a bed.. Now that is a good trade.

  12. Beautiful!

  13. Automatic roller? Non! Hide the eighteen century head, as it may become a lamp.

  14. Yes, what goes around does come around. So thank you for throwing around some of your goodness our way each day to enjoy!

  15. Friends are definitely like that. How special to have found Nance and for Nance to have found you. Enjoy!

What a wonderful world….and a small world. Loved your article today, so I thought I would pop over and check out Nance’s blog — and sure enough, it was one that I had come across before and loved, but forgot to bookmark. Her loft/home is sooooo very neat – something I always dreamed of, living and selling out of the same space. How cool would that be?!?!!

  17. This post makes me smile. 🙂 Blessings! Kimberly

  18. that’s AWESOME! i love this story!
thanks for sharing– you make the world a better place.

FH summed it up perfectly: “…good things come your way like the sun rising…steady and sure.” Energy attracts like energy. You put the “U” in Universe!
Know you’re working hard and playing hard. Have fun!!

  20. The antique painted canvas is stunning, it would look good in my room in Cotignac, It would be stable and well-loved, out of the sunlight…
    Thank you Nance!

it’s great and that is what friends are. they happen to be there at the most unexpected times. hey, do think angels? Bestest,Denise

  22. Just by reading your blog post today I am so cheered by your gorgeous pics, lovely blog born friendship (I tell you blogging is a meeting of many kindred spirits) and sweet everyday kindnesses. Corey I actually teared up knowing that you and your lovely FH, Lynn and wonderful bloggy friends are only 3 hours away but it could just as well be the moon since I can in no way have the pleasure of giving y’all a hug in person or once again slapping together some Tex-Mex eggrolls for you and your crew..tears actually came to my eyes. So I send hugs, blessings, cheers, by comment and prayers for joy, protection, encouragement and precious fellowship. And I am thankful to Him for how generously you share it all….You think Yann would realize what a powerfully good tonic your bloggy bunch is but he does know enough to truly see what the sunshine that follows you.

  23. Choopie’s just loving this latest series, isn’t he …

  24. …and Franca Bollo loves reading these imagining him reading these.

  25. What a wonderful story of friendship! Lovely
photographs, too. If I were a dealer, I would
have a terrible time saying goodbye to all
    those beautiful things. Especially knowing
just how much work is involved in the hunting
and gathering. Wish I could be there!

one hand holds another and pays it forward on and on…..that’s what friends do…hold hands and hearts….with every person we meet, we leave a footprint…..

  27. Thank you Nance, for saving the day and allowing us to see Marburger through Corey’s beautiful images!

The wallpaper fragment sums it all. Penmanship shared by peaceful doves, providing protection under their wings, while sharing the splendor of the past surrounded by the beauty.

  29. I LOVE these stories! FH has learned a big lesson; it is amazing how connected one feels to those one meets on line. The first time I visited an online friend, my daughters (whom I had lectured ad infinitum about the dangers of the internet) were aghast and fully expected me to never come out of her house (they stayed in the car, in case they had to run for the police, I think)!

  30. What an uplifting story, Corey. This has me smiling tonight, knowing that there are strangers & blogging friends helping one another out just because they can and choose to do so. And now FH will have a new friend, too.
