Lloyd Wright’s, Wayfarers Chapel

The entrance lloyd wright chapel

Photography and Text by Corey Amaro.

We arrived in Southern California, several hours late, due to missing our flight out of Austin… That is a the problem with someone who sees numbers backwards, even when I doubled checked… Before French Husband could utter one word of frustration, I reminded him that we were safe, happy, healthy, and out a hundred bucks.

While we waited for the next flight. French Husband gave me that look, and I gave it right back at him. We sat in silence without praying.

We waited. We had lunch. We read magazines. I tried on makeup. We had a beer. We took a nap and later we caught our flight.

Our friend Ladelle greeted us at the airport with a bear hug.

The next day Ladelle took us to Lloyd Wright's Wayfarers Chapel in Southern California:

The glass chapel faces the Pacific ocean, it is barely noticeable through the trees. The sea and sky, the physical and spiritual, are in communion, side by side, with one another.

  6. Thank you for sharing! I have not been to this chapel and it is just beautiful.

  7. I have the same problem with numbers in fact I read words that way too and sometimes type the words that come after first. It can be a real problem. Glad your husband is understanding.
Beautiful photos of the chapel. How fortunate to have been there to see and experience it yourself.

  8. Lovely Corey. Matthew, are you still sleeping? There’s architecture to look at!

  10. How beautiful, what a treat! Thank you for sharing

  11. Have been in a few FLW buildings but not this one. It looks remarkable. I can imagine how it feels to be there. I have the same problem with numbers but it never caused me to miss a flight – missed a few appointments here and there though.

  12. Amazing chapel, so beautiful. Glad you arrived safely. We’ve been having strange weather in the west.

  13. That place is amazing. It looks like it would fit right in in Rivendell! 😀

  14. Just when I think I have known all the buildings FLW has designed, out pops another. This is amazing and your photos of it are as well. Magnificent. What a serene house of worship. I can only imagine the wait list of those wanting to be married or buried from here. I’d say it was a pretty good spot for you and FH to go and for all to be forgiven regarding the flight.

  15. We have been there for weddings! Isn’t it just heavenly! Lloyd Wright is the son of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The glass chapel (located in Palos Verdes) was built around 1951, I believe. If you will be in the LA area today, you must visit Vintage Weave Interiors…a fabulous shop filled with French antiques. Have a safe trip home.

  16. Another thought…I hope Ladelle is doing much better and moving forward now. The death of a spouse is VERY difficult for anyone. Will she join you in Willows?

  17. What a beautiful house of worship. There is a peace about just looking at your pictures that encompassed me as I looked at them. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place.

  18. I live here and I’ve never seen that! Beautiful.

  19. Ok now you’re almost in my territory. If you get anywhere near Paso Robles let me know.
Glad you are having a wonderful trip!

  20. Beautiful! I feel that I have been there, but now must ask my husband. If so, it was in another life. I must go there again, it is awesome.

I live not 5 minutes from here! The world is so small. I hope you enjoyed our little corner of heaven here in LA.

  31. Spectacular! There are similar glass chapels designed by architect Fay Jones. One of the most beautiful is located in Garvan Gardens in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
