The Little King

Little king

Last night was homecoming in Willows.

My three year old nephew was the little king, holder of the crown.

I hadn't been to a Willows High School Homecoming since I left high school in 1976… at that time my baby brother Zane was the Little King he was three years old…

Somethings, not many, never change…

Were you ever the Homecoming King or Queen?

I wasn't.

Not even a little one.

  1. Nope..me neither. They wanted my mom to be “Choir Queen” when she was in high school, but my Baptist grandma wouldn’t let her because she would have been crowned at a dance. So, they made her “Carnival Queen.” Or…maybe it was the other way around…because she does have the “Choir Queen” trophy. My poor mama, my flirty little grandma was actually a dance instructor way back in the day!
    Your nephew is a doll!

  2. You captured quite the smoldering look between the big queen and king.
Ummm. No, never homecoming queen. When I was six my mom entered me in the Little MIss Honey Bee Pageant though. I got to ride on a car in a parade. The picture of me shows me sitting with my legs apart so everyone can see my underwear. I definitely should have won!

  3. Nope, no Queen’s crown for me. Unfortunately, I was a geek in high school. My geekiness served me well as I met some of the most wonderful and creative people – also geeks. They are all now quite successful, including a famous Broadway producer.

  4. I was the Prom Queen in high school. Now I’m the Queen of the kitchen and of cleaning the bathrooms and folding the laundry….I love the look between the King and Queen and the look on your nephew’s face – both are priceless.

  5. No. Me neither. I didn’t even go to my own school’s homecoming dance. Ouch. Still hurts. I did have a lot of fun in high school, however, and still have friends who keep in touch.
Remember the old Imperial Margarine commercials? Dadadara! Imperial Margarine. Fit to be King. Like the others, love the picture.

  6. NO! I wasn’t Homecoming Queen material…not back in the 60s. Didn’t really care much about all the glam and glitter, plus I wanted to be KING, not Queen! I’m not as bossy now, but still like to run things.

  7. No, not here either. I was in the East High Pep Club for 3 years!! Hmmm I will have to find that picture and send it to you just for laughs.

  8. Me neither. Your nephew is darling!

No,I was a pain in the neck! 😀

  10. Love the expression on your nephew’s face! Did the school have a dance? Did Sasha go and enjoy the American HS traditions?

Nice picture, your nephew is so adorable. Goodness, my whole family was there last nite, I missed a good gathering of kin.

  12. No. I didn’t even go to the Homecoming Dance.
My daughter, however, much lovelier than I, was up for homecoming queen. She didn’t get it but she was actually relieved.

  13. No crowns for this girl…..class officer type!!! Your nephew is adorable!!!!

  14. Very cute. Who were the big king and queen?
A Honker homecoming sounds so fun, glad you got to go.
    And no….I was never queen!!!!

  15. Never a little king, a king, or a queen. How cute your little king is. How very special for you to be there after all these years.

  16. Hope you are feeling better today. Your post hit a nerve today . . .my daughter is going to homecoming tonight (it’s her first time to go with a date). And, tonight is my high school reunion. I look forward to helping my daughter get ready, but I think I will skip the painful memories the reunion would renew. Enjoyed my morning coffe with you again today, C! xo

  17. My mother was a homecoming queen, but this nut fell far from that tree! I was a hippie and couldn’t have cared less about football, homecoming, etc.
Love that darling little king of yours, though.

  18. Are the King and Queen an item? With the look they are giving each other they should be. Such an adorable Little King. Does Yo Yo think all of this tradition is a bit strange? Glad you are enjoying your visit and feeling better I trust.

  19. Nope, no significant Homecoming hoopla that I can recall, because no outsiders besides students attending the two competing schools were admitted to games — and we had to sit on opposite sides of our field.
I attended a huge urban high school, so all our home football games had to be played on Friday afternoons (in order to end while it was still daylight), and only registered students were admitted — IDs were checked at the gate! (Ditto for basketball games, on school-day afternoons). This policy was instituted after a huge rumble (think “West Side Story”) following a home night game against Vallejo High, which was an equally “tough” high school in my day. Mercifully, back in those days the weapon of choice was chiefly fists (or the occasional switchblade), but never guns that I can recall.
Also, only registered students from my high school were admitted to our school dances; again, IDs were checked at the door.

  20. Warren was a perfect little king!!

  21. No Kings or Queens in SA schools!
Love the expression on your nephew’s face – so sweet!

  22. Mardog was the ’79 queen and she never ceases to remind me …

  23. Addendum … Mardog’s mother, the ageless Patricia Kelly Hall, was a WHS homecoming queen, too.

  24. Denise Solsrud

that is too precious! it is quite a shot, including the young man and young lady. perfect timing. Bestest,Denise

No, I was not ever a Homecoming Queen. Does it count for anything that the Homecoming Queen wore one of my dresses because she didn’t have anything suitable? lol
Your nephew is so cute I could just grab him and kiss those sweet rosy cheeks of his.

  26. How darling. Sounds like your having a good time visiting home. My younger sister was a Homecoming Queen years ago. Me….never. My sons schools homecoming is next Friday night.

  27. He is too adorable, how do you get anything done when those cheeks are there for squeezing?

  28. Homecoming queen – always aspired, never acquired….oh well, it’s a lot of pressure to live up to those expectations…I tell myself….cute little guy!!!

  29. What’s Franco Bolla talking about? A dog can’t be Queen.

  30. Not entirely sure what the Homecoming thing is, but your little guy looks like the one who should be crowned king!

  31. Your nephew is adorable! In just a handful of years, he might very well grow up to be a Homecoming King himself.

  32. jend’isère

My claim to royalty moments are limited to finding a feve in the galette de roi cake.
    PS.such personalities in your photo!

  33. Little king looks none too thrilled but he is precious no matter what!
Never had any homecoming royalty in HS just a bonfire and a dance. NO little kings either, not sure what purpose it serves. I was thinking what Pat said that the look you captured on the other two speaks volumes and if they aren’t, they ought to be! That picture tells more than one story!
As for me…somewhere in the dress up trunk redides a tiara once given to me for some 4-H related nonsense. I do not readily admit to this …EVER!!!!

  34. Brother Mathew

Mardog was a Queensland Heeler I think. Great dog.

  35. Victoria Ramos

That photo of your nephew is priceless!!!! I just love it! And his expressions.
Homecomings, especially in a small town where everyone comes out for the games, are great and sooo americana. I grew up and went to a small town/high school in Yolo County/West Sacramento. I was a cheerleader for 3 years and that day of parades and floats and homecoming courts circling the fields in convertibles still bring back so many memories for me. I was a Prom Princess, but never a Homecoming Queen.
It is so neat that Sacha gets to experience this little bit of ‘school spirit’! Great memories. And you all being there together, even better!

  36. I am late seeing this but yes, I was the Homecoming Queen. I didn’t get to have little attendants and we had a basketball homecoming since my little high school only started a football team the year AFTER I graduated. My Mother made my red satin and white lace antebellum ball gown since we had a Valentine themed homecoming. After all these years, I still have, and treasure, that tattered old dress. (I looked like a big, gaudy candy box!!) Oh, your nephew is adorable!!
